id Software is one of the most talented studios in the industry, and its track record speaks for itself, both in terms of recent years and, of course, the long-term. Interest in what the developer will come out with next is always high, then, and sure enough, id Software is working on its next major project.
In the lead-up to QuakeCon, the same was recently confirmed by id Software’s Marty Stratton (via @klobrille on Twitter), who said that id Software is “hard at work” on its “next big game”, but that the developer is “not ready to share details quite yet.”
It’s not surprising in the slightest that the studio is focused on its next big project, of course, but it’s nice to have official confirmation nonetheless. DOOM Eternal launched in 2020, with its expansion – the two-parter The Ancient Gods – launching over the course of the coming year, so whatever that next project is is obviously still in early development.
As for what it could be- that’s anyone’s best guess. There’s a strong chance that we’re in for another DOOM game, seeing as the studio was recently looking to recruit someone with extensive knowledge of “recent id games, including DOOM and DOOM Eternal.” Then again, previous job ads have also potentially suggested that a Quake revival could be in the works. For now, however, that all remains speculation and nothing more.
