People have a lot of concerns over Marvel’s Avengers, but one area that had people worried prior to its reveal – that it would be eschewing single player gameplay and instead going for a completely online-focused live service model – don’t seem to be very relevant anymore. That’s because Square Enix have gone out of their way to give assurances that a narrative-focused single player campaign is going to be at the core of the experience, that it’s going to be meaty experience (we hope so, anyway), and that its online elements are going to be completely optional and skippable.
Here, today, we have so more new details on its campaign- more specifically, pertaining to side missions and objectives. Speaking with GamesBeat, Crystal Dynamics co-head Scot Amos got to talking about side missions in the game, saying that they’ll provide certain benefits to players – which we can probably assume means more experience points and better gear – but that they will be completely optional. If you wish, you can go through the entire campaign and come back to the side missions later on.
“There are missions that you definitely want to go through because there are certain — how should I put it? — benefits you get only if you go through that particular arc, but it’s completely optional,” said Amos. “You can say no, I’m going to go through the main campaign, I’m going to get the story done, I’m going to go through these areas. And then you can go back and replay any of that stuff whenever you want to.”
Marvel’s Avengers is due out May 15th, 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. Read more about how Square Enix wants it to surpass Sony and Insomniac’s Spider-Man through here.
