It’s been something of a whirlwind for news about the upcoming superhero game, Marvel’s Avengers. A lot of that centers around the fact that one of the most popular superheroes on the planet, Spider-Man, will be exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. The developer has tried to explain why, implying it could have something to do with Sony having some ownership of the character rights. It’s a bit of a mess, but if you’re feeling frustrated about it, it does seem as if it’s a one time deal.
Speaking with IGN Japan, Crystal Dynamics Co-Head Scot Amos addressed the exclusivity and when asked if we could expect other characters to see similar exclusive deals, he simply said, “Spider-Man is a unique opportunity for us because of the relationship that PlayStation and Marvel have. That is the only character that we are doing that way.” So it seems the friendly neighborhood hero is the only exclusive, at least for the foreseeable future.
Marvel’s Avengers will launch September 4th, with the first beta coming August 7th for those who preordered on PS4. We got to play it a little earlier, and you can see our impressions of it through here with our 6 biggest takeaways from the time we spent with it.
