Classic 2D sidescrolling franchises like Mario and Sonic are going to see modernized new entries soon in the form of Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Sonic Superstars, which, unsurprisingly, has prompted many to start dreaming about similar future instalments for other 2D classics- like Mega Man, for instance. Of course, Capcom’s mascon character has seen fair bit of activity in the recent part, from Mega Man 11 in 2018 to Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection in 2020 to Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection earlier this year. But what can we expect from the franchise’s future?
It won’t surprise you to know that that’s something Capcom is actively thinking about. Asked about the franchise and its future in a recent Q&A with shareholders, the company said that it’s “considering how to approach” new entries, which includes a number of factors, including the game’s premise, its gameplay ideas, and more.
“Mega Man is one of Capcom’s historic IPs and is loved by fans, and as such we want to take care in how we develop the series.,” Capcom said. “We are considering how to approach the production of new entries in the series, which requires numerous factors, including the development of a solid concept, ideas and gameplay, etc.”
Of course, while that’s far from a concrete confirmation of a new Mega Man game being in the works, it does at least indicate that Capcom hasn’t put the series on the backburner and is actively thinking of ideas for which direction to take it with future instalments. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before we get a clearer idea of just what that’ll end up being.
