Metroid Dread Will Have Several Types of E.M.M.I. Robots, Each with Unique Abilities

In a new blog update, the developers of Metroid Dread provide new details on the game's stalker enemies, the E.M.M.I. robots.

Metroid Dread would have been an incredibly exciting game even if it was just another regular old Metroid game- not just because it’s been such long time since we last got once of those, but also because a regular old Metroid game is guaranteed to be excellent. However, Metroid Dread is also throwing mechanical stalker enemies known as the E.M.M.I. robots on top of that formula, which promises to be an exciting mechanic.

In a new blog update, the developers of the game recently went into details on these E.M.M.I. robots. Each robot will patrol a designated zone, and will have three phases- the blue phase, in which it will be patrolling the zone; the yellow phase, in which it will investigate sounds; and the red phase, in which it will be chasing after Samus. E.M.M.I. robots are nearly invincible, with only the temporary Omega updates made to Samus’ arm cannon capable of defeating them, while if one catches you, it’s game over for you, unless you manage to time what sounds like an incredibly tough melee counter just right.

What’s interesting is that there are apparently going to be several different kinds of E.M.M.I. robots in the game. The announcement trailer of the game itself already showed three different kinds, but the developers tease that apparently there are going to be many more, each with unique abilities.

“The announcement trailer shows several E.M.M.I., including two models that differ in color as well as a broken one,” the blog update reads, then teases that the game’s key art hints at more than just the ones that have been shown: “However, this illustration shows seven shadows of E.M.M.I. behind Samus. It seems there are more kinds of E.M.M.I. out there!

“Each of the E.M.M.I. have different abilities. What kinds of abilities, you may ask? Why, the E.M.M.I. hold countless mysteries, but we’ll save this mystery for another time.”

Metroid Dread launches for the Nintendo Switch on October 8. You can get an extended look at its gameplay and see the E.M.M.I. robots in action through here and here.
