Nier and Drakengard have always been niche titles, but when NieR: Automata received massive plaudits upon launch last year, there was little doubt in anyone’s mind that it would go on to sell much better than what many may have initially expected. A few months back, it was announced that Nier: Automata had crossed 3 million units of shipments worldwide, and it’s now crossed yet another milestone.
The game’s official Twitter account recently posted an update saying that counting worldwide shipments and digital downloads, that number has now come up to 3.5 million units. The game launched on Xbox One earlier this year, back in June, and that doubtless had a positive impact on its sales as well, and probably explains the surge we’re seeing.
Given the game’s success, there should be little doubt left that Square Enix and PlatinumGames should be working on sequel very soon (unless work hasn’t begun already)- that’s speculation on my part, but that’s how it goes, after all. Meanwhile, Nintendo Switch owners who also want some love can hold on to hope- not too long ago, director Yoko Taro said that a Switch port wasn’t completely out of the question.
