Project Cars is an upcoming racing simulation video game with a mixed emphasis on arcade and realistic driving styles, appealing to both hardcore and casual racing demographics. The game is currently being developed by Slightly Mad Studios who are also going to be self publishing the impressive looking racer.
The game was originally slated for a release window of mid 2014 before slipping to Q4, but since then, the game has been delayed further being pushed back to Q1-Q2 of 2015 for polishing and refinement.
From what we’ve seen thus far, the game is marketable and playable, but Slightly Mad Studios are ensuring they will put a solid title onto the market. The game is scheduled for an 8th gen hardware launch with no 7th generation ports in the works. Whilst the release date isn’t confirmed just yet, we know that the game will be launching on Xbox One, PS4, Wii U and SteamOS.
Development
Slightly Mad Studios is an award-winning developer known most recently for its work on Electronic Arts’ Need For Speed franchise with the successful SHIFT series. It decided to create this game with absolutely no funding from a publisher, going through the community and the purchase of tool packs. Players themselves can contribute and give ideas to development in roles including content creation, marketing and quality assurance (QA). Members themselves will receive a 70% chunk of game sales profits generated within the first 2 years.
Creative director Andy Tudor rested his hopes on the development of the game for next gen consoles entirely up to the community. In an interview he stated, “So we’re looking at release for next-gen consoles after the current-gen and it would require additional money but we have strong hope that the community sees the potential and decides to fund it.[reference]
The studio is also working with leading car manufacturers in integrating new cars into the game, and some of them include three Pagani sports cars. Head of studio at Slightly Mad Studios stated in an interview, “We’re delighted to be working so closely with one of the world’s leading super car manufacturers. Pagani and Slightly Mad Studios both share a core interest in creating class-leading products for enthusiasts, and pushing boundaries to their extremes. As such, we are dedicated to producing the most accurate representation of Pagani’s amazing cars ever seen in a game. We look forward to doing the cars justice.” [reference]
Gameplay
Although the game is still in development, there are reportedly over 60 licensed cars and over 35 race tracks. The player will have the opportunity in racing in real world racing circuits as well as kart circuits, with real world locations such as Côte d’Azur and California’s Pacific Coast. For legal reasons, tracks are named using their geographic position. The game will also include dynamic Time Of Day and localized weather patterns in an effort to make every race unique and challenging. A gameplay video showcases a car racing along the track along with a shot of a player using a steering wheel to drive, which confirms the use of the steering wheel in the game. [reference]
Founder and chief designer at Pagani Automobili, Horacio Pagani stated in an interview, “A simulation like Project Cars will give enthusiasts all over the world the opportunity to experience the unique driving feel of a Pagani. With the support of our technical partners Mercedes-AMG, Brembo and Pirelli , our engineers are working closely with the physics engine developers to create the most realistic experience possible.” [reference]
More than ten game modes covering every form of motorsport will also be included such as the Franchise Mode which allows the player to start a tailored career, beginning in the Karting world, and will move ahead giving the player the specialization of their choice, which includes Rally, Touring Cars, Open-Wheel, GT, Le Mans, etc. It will also allow the option of co-op.
The game will also allow you to compare scores, times and challenges as well as connecting with friend using a Cloud social network . Mod like content will be available to player who like to custom make their races right down the details which includes decals, tuning setups, and events.
