RAGE 2, developed by id Software and Avalanche Studios, has been fairly impressive with its graphical fidelity so far. Developed on Avalanche’s Apex Engine, we’ve seen environments with plenty of details, good amount of alpha effects, and solid texture work. Of course, the question has always been how this will all run on the Xbox One and PS4. We’ve always known that it will target 60 FPS on the more powerful versions of these consoles, but more specific details have been lacking.
Thankfully, id Software studio director Tim Willits has finally clarified the same. Speaking to Hardcore Gamer, Willits was asked about the game’s graphical enhancements on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. He answered, “To make it simple, on the enhanced consoles, it runs at 1080p/60fps. On base hardware, it runs at 30fps. On PC, it’s uncapped. We went for speed over 4K for the enhanced consoles.”
So it seems that the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro won’t support 4K, either native or via checkerboard rendering. Interestingly, Willits didn’t outright confirm the resolutions for the base Xbox One and PS4. Could they be less than 1080p resolution in order to help performance? Time will certainly tell.
RAGE 2 is out on May 14th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
