Returnal: Ascension Update is Now Live, Adds Co-op and Tower of Sisyphus Mode

Two players can team up and tackle the story together, while solo players can challenge the new endless survival mode and net a high score.

Housemarque’s latest big update for Returnal, Ascension, is now live. It introduces two-player co-op for the main story along with the Tower of Sisyphus, a new mode with escalating challenge. The former sees Selene teaming up with another iteration of herself and includes support for joining and hosting sessions (public or private).

Daily Challenges, house sequences (aka the first-person narrative bits) and Tower of Sisyphus are not available in co-op. Though progression is exclusive to the host, any logs and Xenoglyphs collected will be saved. You can also increase your Scout Rank by playing with someone else.

As for Tower of Sisyphus, it’s essentially an endless tower that players must climb with multiple phases and a new boss, Algos. Along with secrets and diverging routes, it includes new weapons and story content. Rack up kills to increase your score multiplier and see how far you can go before succumbing to the inevitable.

Returnal is currently available for PS5. Check out our review for the base game here.
