Sea of Thieves Exceeds 5 Million Players

It seems like the game has managed to overcome its issues and cultivate a healthy community.

Sony isn’t the only company that launched successful first party game last quarter. Microsoft and Rare have revealed that their shared world multiplayer pirate adventure game has now crossed 5 million players across Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, which is a marvellous success for it by any yard stick.

This is important- 5 million players does not mean 5 million units sold, especially not with Game Pass existing. In fact, given the existence of Game Pass, traditional sales numbers for Microsoft games may not be a meaningful metric. It does seem like the game managed to have a good reach, although the more telling number will be how many active players it has. Rare did specify that the game has added a million players since E3 week, so it seems like it has a pretty substantial active player base at the moment.

With Rare and Microsoft doubling down on support for the game, and on trying to address its problems, hopefully, the game continues to grow and be successful for a long time to come.
