A lot of people have pointed out the similarities between the new Tomb Raider games and the Uncharted series by Naughty Dog. It’s actually an ironic twist, because the original Uncharted was also similarly compared to the older Tomb Raider franchise in a similar manner back when it first came out.
Nonetheless, with Uncharted‘s profile now having grown so much, for Eidos Montreal, who are developing the upcoming Shadow of the Tomb Raider, those comparisons between their series and Uncharted are unavoidable. Speaking to GameSpot, Narrative Director Jason Dozois explained how he sees the two to be different.
“The tone is a little different–they’re more grounded with their mythology, and we’re more magical,” Dozois said. “They’re more humor-oriented and we’re a bit more drama-oriented. I think we have a uniqueness on the exploration side.” Dozois went on to note that Eidos Montreal are all huge fans of Uncharted. “I loved Uncharted 4, it was a lot of fun. Great storytelling and great character moments. It’s fun to be in that world,” he said.
So it’s good to see that they are aware of the comparisons, and that they have ideas in mind for how their games differ from Naughty Dog’s. As Dozois has pointed out, there are enough differences between the two series for fans to be able to enjoy both.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider launches on September 14 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It is slated to be the final game in the rebooted trilogy. If you haven’t already, check out the newest trailer for it showcasing the various combat options available to Lara.
