It’s no secret that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 performed very well in the UK, especially in comparison to Sony’s PlayStation 3. The former was by far the more popular console in the territory, while the latter always found itself playing catch up. All told, the UK was a very successful place for Microsoft last gen. That, said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, was something “we weren’t going to let happen again.”
Speaking with Gamereactor, the Sony executive touched on Microsoft’s current standing in the console war, as well as what Sony is doing differently this time around. Ryan acknowledged that with the newly announced features for Xbox One, Microsoft was catching up, but joked, “Yeah, have they launched in Scandinavia yet, I don’t…?”
When he learned of the planned September release date, Ryan said, “That’s good. It’s some way away. We’ll look to carry on giving Scandinavian gamers a great PlayStation 4 experience.”
Ryan also discussed Sony’s revived performance in territories that, last gen, were considered Microsoft strongholds, such as the UK. I’ve been pretty public, we needed to do better in the UK,” he said. “They [Microsoft] did a great job on us in that market with PS3 and Xbox 360, and we resolved that we weren’t going to let that happen again, and at least so far, and it’s very early days, I think we really raised our game, and I’m very happy with that.”
And considering that the PlayStation 4 remains the top selling console worldwide, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be.
