Square Enix Recruits Devil May Cry 5, Dragon’s Dogma Designer To Work On New AAA Action-RPG

Ryota Suzuki is working on the unannounced game as Battle Director.

Square Enix have recruited Capcom veteran Ryota Suzuki to work on an unannounced AAA action-RPG. At Capcom, Suzuki was a designer on Dragon’s Dogma and Devil May Cry 5, as well as Lead Game Designer on Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. On Square Enix’s new game, he’s serving as Battle Director.

In an interview published by Square Enix (translated by Siliconera), he talked briefly about the nature of this project, contrasting it with RPGs Square Enix has commonly associated with. He mentioned that unlike the more command-based RPGs that Square Enix used to work on in the past, owing to changing tastes in audiences, they’re now shifting to an approach that sees them include more action elements in their RPGs (the recent Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a perfect example of that). For that purpose, Suzuki, thanks to his experience with Capcom’s action games, serves as a good fit for what they’r working on.

While the interview doesn’t specifically mention any platforms for the game, one would assume that it’s in development for next-gen platforms. Previous job listings from Square Enix have mentioned that they’re working on a new action game for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, so it’s possible that this could be related to that. Read more on that through here.
