Street Fighter 6 – Dynamic Controls Revealed, Only Available in Local Play

While Modern Controls reduce the number of button combinations, Dynamic Controls perform different attacks based on the situation.

When Capcom unveiled Street Fighter 6 in June, it also announced that there would be two control schemes – Modern and Classic. The former has fewer button inputs for combos and Special Arts, which director Takayuki Nakayama clarified is “not an easy mode.” However, there’s third control scheme that Game Informer recently had a look at – Dynamic Controls.

It sees the game deciding which attacks to use based on the face buttons pressed and a character’s position. So if you attack at a distance with one button, this will fire a projectile. Pressing the same button at close-range could execute a combo. Parries are still manual, and there is some strategy involved.

Nakayama explained that the control scheme was inspired by the term “button masher.” “In a normal fighting game, when they [mash buttons], they just do a lot of whiffs. We wanted something important and something that makes a difference happen by randomly pressing buttons.”

Dynamic Controls are only available in local play, while Modern and Classic Controls are available in all modes. Nakayama also said the team is working to balance the latter two against each other, making them both viable in competitive settings.

Street Fighter 6 is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC in 2023. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
