Following a launch in Japan in early 2021, it released in the West later that year, not long afterward, though it seems the game won’t be sticking around for much longer.

Square Enix has announced that NieR Re[in]carnation will be ending service on April 29. The final chapter of The People and the World will be released on March 28 and will serve as the conclusion to the game. Following that, the game will remain active for another month before going offline.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our players for your patronage over the 2.5 years since we launched on July 28, 2021,” Square Enix wrote. “Until the end of service, we will continue to add content and characters, as well as hold various events and campaigns, so we hope you will continue to enjoy NieR Re[in]carnation until the end.”

Between now and its aforementioned final update, NieR Re[in]carnation will also be adding new story and content updates, new events, new missions, and more.

The RPG launched for mobile devices in September, and Square Enix confirmed not long afterward that it would also be coming to PC soon.

Now, the company has announced an official release date for the game. Taking to Twitter, Square Enix revealed that Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis will launch for PC via Steam on December 7. The game has been available to wishlist on the platform since last week, and as previously confirmed, new players hopping into the game on PC will get several in-game bonuses, including 3,000 Blue Crystals, a Guaranteed Draw Ticket for a five-star weapon, 30 Draw Tickets, a Gear Voucher, and more.

Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is currently available on iOS and Android. As of earlier this month, it had topped 7 million downloads worldwide.

As a free-to-play turn-based RPG, Ever Crisis incorporates content from multiple titles in the series, from the original game and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 to the defunct battle royale title The First Soldier. There’s also some brand-new content, including a new story centered on Sephiroth.

There are also gacha mechanics, with players able to roll for different versions of characters and higher-rarity weapons. Newcomers on PC can obtain 3,000 Blue Crystals, a Guaranteed Draw Ticket for a five-star weapon, 30 Draw Tickets, a Gear Voucher, two Jumpstart Item Sets, two five-star Zweihander and one five-star Apology in Hell.

You can redeem these in-game from the Gift Box once the game goes live. New players on iOS and Android will get the same rewards, but since they’re the same as the pre-registration goodies on mobile, existing players won’t get them. As a free-to-play turn-based RPG with gacha elements, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis adapts all titles and media from the series into an episodic format. It currently follows Final Fantasy 7 (with some content from the Remake), Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7.

There are daily quests, Summon Quests, Dungeons, co-op battles, limited-time events, the Battle Tower and Story Quests, like how Cloud traveled to Midgar and Aerith’s relationship with her mother. You can also send Chocobos out on expeditions for items. The next chapter is in development with a release date and time to be announced, so stay tuned.

Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is playable on iOS and Android. It’s confirmed for PC with cross-play supported, though there’s no release window.

A PC version of the title has entered development, and the company confirms it will also support cross-progression with the mobile versions. A release date for the PC release hasn’t yet been confirmed, however.

Whether that means we’ll eventually also be seeing Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis on consoles remains to be seen, though clearly, the game’s initial success has encouraged Square Enix to try and expand its audience.

It’s a strong start for the mobile title, which essentially “reimagines” the Final Fantasy 7 saga as a free-to-play title while adding gacha elements. The art style during exploration is reminiscent of the older titles but with sharp new visuals. You can also assemble parties of different characters and variants, with combat utilizing the Active Time Battle system.

In addition to Before Crisis, Advent Children, Crisis Core Reunion and Dirge of Cerberus, the mobile title includes an original storyline with Sephiroth. It’s after Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier (which has shut down) and leads into Crisis Core. Time will tell if Ever Crisis has long-term appeal, so stay tuned for more updates.

Square Enix has also said that though reception for the game’s recent closed beta test was largely positive (with most players giving it a rating of 4-5 stars), it will also be looking to address criticisms such as the UI and progression before the final release.

Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis will encompass and retell key stories from the original Final Fantasy 7 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 in an episodic format, in addition to including new, never-before-seen content, like an episode telling the story of a young Sephiroth.

Unlike NieR: Automata and NieR Replicant, NieR Re[in]carnation follows a turn-based combat system. You’ll also encounter a number of characters that can join your party with variations of the same (along with weapons) obtainable through gacha. The story focuses on a mysterious girl who wanders a strange world called the Cage.

Along with experiencing different Weapon Stories and partaking in battles involving their characters, the girl also runs into a being called the Dark Monster on occasion. Its story and how it relates to the girl forms the crux of the story. NieR Re[in]carnation has crossed 10 million downloads in Japan as of March 2021 so it should be interesting to see its performance in the West. Stay tuned for more details following its release.

On top of reiterating that pre-registrations for it are open, they also reveal that over 400,000 players have already registered for the game- so clearly, there’s plenty of interest where fans are concerned.
