However, those plans were shelved when the studio was informed that it would instead be working on Modern Warfare 3.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has turned out to be a major disappointment, with its underwhelming and shockingly short campaign in particular having drawn widespread criticism. In the wake of poor reception for the first person shooter, a recent report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has also shed light on the its rushed development, with Sledgehammer Games reportedly having had to put together the single player campaign in the space of just 16 months (and not under the best working conditions).

In addition to that, another interest tidbit that the report has revealed is that Modern Warfare 3 was apparently not even the game Sledgehammer itself wanted to work on. As per the report, after development was wrapped up on 2021’s Call of Duty: Vanguard, the studio pitched a title codenamed Anvil to parent company Activision, which was supposed to be set in the same universe as and serve as a follow-up to 2014’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Apparently, some amount of work was put into the project, though before it could get too far in development, it had to be shelved, with Activision informing Sledgehammer that it would instead be working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time that Sledgehammer Games has attempted to get a sequel to the fan-favourite 2014 title off the ground. In 2017, it was reported that before development began on Call of Duty: WW2, the studio’s first choice was to work on an Advanced Warfare sequel. Whether or not we will actually get to see Sledgehammer returning to that setting at some point in the future remains to be seen, but the studio will certainly be hoping that things are different from here on out, under the new ownership of Microsoft.

While a recent rumour suggested that the sci-fi first person shooter was in line for a direct sequel, a new report has claimed that's not the case.

With reports claiming that Treyarch’s next Call of Duty game will arrive in 2024, followed by Sledgehammer Games’ next entry the year after that, there have been several questions asked about what both those studios are working on. Recently, a rumour seemed to give us a more solid idea of what the latter’s game would be, but another report has followed that suggests that that might not be the case.

Yesterday, we covered a report from insider RalphsValve that claimed that Sledgehammer Games has started working on a direct sequel to 2014’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, moving away from the period settings of its last two entries and returning to a near-future sci-fi setting.

Now, however, prominent Call of Duty outlet CharlieIntel has disputed that. Taking recently to Twitter, they said that, contrary to the aforementioned rumours, they have heard that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2 isn’t in development at Sledgehammer Games after all, and that at this time, there’s no clarity on what exactly the studio’s next project is going to be.

Sledgehammer Games has previously said that it wants to develop at least two sequels to 2021’s Call of Duty: Vanguard. The World War 2 shooter’s critical and commercial performance fell below Activision’s expectations, however, so it’s unclear at this point whether the publisher will want to return to that setting and that same set of characters.

Meanwhile, October 28 will see the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which is reportedly set to receive map packs featuring classics from older entries as paid DLC in 2023. Read more on that through here.

I have heard that there is no Advanced Warfare 2 currently in development at Sledgehammer Games, despite the rumors today.

Not fully clear yet what Sledgehammer Games is working on.

A new report claims that Sledgehammer Games has dropped plans for a Vanguard sequel and is instead returning to the futuristic setting of Advanced Warfare.

Even in the absence of an official confirmation, it’s looking like Call of Duty is going to break its annual release cycle and not launch a new game in 2023. Next year will see post-launch support for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continuing (allegedly with paid DLC featuring maps from older games in the series), while reports have claimed that 2024 see the launch of the next game by Treyarch (whether or not it will be another Black Ops games remains to be seen).

Of course, that would mean that Sledgehammer Games will be next in line after that. As per leaks, the studio has started working on 2025’s Call of Duty game, and now, a new report published by prominent Call of Duty insider RalphsValve on Whatifgaming may have spilled the beans on what that game will be.

As per the report, Sledgehammer is working on a direct sequel to 2014’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. The first in the series’ era of futuristic sci-fi games, Advanced Warfare was the first Call of Duty title to be developed entirely by Sledgehammer, formally introducing the studio into the series’ three-developer cycle. The next couple of games developed by Sledgehammer took players to World War 1 and World War 2 settings respectively, but it seems the developer is ready to take the series back into the near-future.

While Sledgehammer Games has previously talked about wanting to develop at least a couple of direct sequels to Call of Duty: Vanguard, given the shooter’s disappointing critical and commercial performance, it’s not a surprise that the developer and publisher Activision have decided to change tack. RalphsValve seems to suggest that wanting to keep things fresh and varied for Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 may also have played a role in deciding to go with the futuristic setting of Advanced Warfare.

Meanwhile, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is due out on October 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

The co-founder of the Call of Duty: WW2 developer is set to step down from Activision in a few weeks.

Sledgehammer Games and Activision has been a pretty successful marriage. The company, founded of ex-EA Visceral alum, first worked with Infinity Ward on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, then proceeded to make the well received Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in 2014, before finally getting their biggest hit to date with last year’s Call of Duty: WW2.

But it seems like Sledgehammer co-founder Glen Schofield will be stepping down from his position at the end of the year nonetheless. Schofield announced his decision to do so on Twitter, noting that he has nothing but appreciation for Activision and the three Call of Duty games that he got to work on, but that he is eager for what lies ahead. As to that, he only teased that it would be “something exciting”, and left the rest to imagination. That said, he also noted that he would take a break first.

Schofield made games that sold millions and did well, so I hope he is satisfied with his tenure at Activision. We wish him luck at whatever he sets out to do next, and can’t wait to see where he will turn up.

I’ve had a great run here at Activision; 3 COD’s- MW3, AW and WWll- that I’m proud of. I feel it’s time to try something new tho. I’ll be leaving Activision end of Dec. and taking some time off to relax. Then off to something else exciting.
Thank u Activision for everything!

Not a fan of "Simon Says"? These boss battles may annoy you even more.

We’ve seen bosses require quite the complex array of mechanics to bring down. However, some of them aren’t quite as complex, employing a healthy dosage of quick-time events to emphasize the “cinematic” nature of moments. What happens when those QTEs become a little too excessive? Let’s take a look at boss battles where this is the case.

Hoyt – Far Cry 3

After Vaas, one would think a showdown with the bigger bad of Far Cry 3 would be more bombastic. Alas, the final battle with Hoyt is a knife fight. One isn’t generally opposed to knife fights (they have knives!) but you’re doing little more than pushing a button at the right time. If you’re lucky, you can actually “skull and crossbones” Hoyt, shoving a knife through his throat and forehead at the same time.

Whether they're too tough, mockingly easy or just plain ridiculous, it's hard to defend some Achievements.

Achievements are a strange phenomena in gaming culture. Some of us obsess over them. Others couldn’t care less when they pop up. But every now and again, you’ll come across and Achievement that will make you think “Wow, now that’s pretty stupid”. Whether it’s something so insignificant or easy as to not warrant the term “achievement” or something insanely tough to the point of ridiculousness, let’s take a look at the 10 dumbest Xbox One Achievements out there.

Would You Like Some Crumpets With That? – Injustice 2

NetherRealm’s Injustice 2 is one of the most complete fighting games to release this year, providing a great campaign with excellent voice acting and characterization, an awesome roster of fighters and the Multiverse mode to keep players busy for hours. As you’d expect, there would be Achievements related to each character like winning a match with Wonder Woman with the final hit dealt by a Meter Burn Lasso of Truth.

Or how about Supergirl beating Superman after hitting 20 Kryptonian Lasers? However, perhaps the dumbest – and easiest – Achievement to unlock is “Would You Like Some Crumpets With That?” It’s very simple – just duck 10 times in a row during a single match. No, seriously. That’s it. It’s the video game equivalent of Duck Duck Goose.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has a map in the multiplayer mode, Atlas Gorge, which is a remake of the popular Pipeline map from the 2007 hit Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This remade map has so far been available only to people who bought either the game’s Season Pass, or any of the various Collector’s Editions- however, Sledgehammer announced today on Twitter that it is going to be made available for free to all players.

This change is available on all platforms- meaning Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC players alike should be able to play on the new map for free. The exact reason for this change is unknown, but the change is appreciated regardless. Maybe it has something to do with trying to create awareness for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, which is due out later this year?

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was the firts game in the franchise developed by Sledgehammer Games. it is out now on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC.

Studio head Michael Condrey discusses the important role that women have in the military.

If you’ve been noticing a rise in strong female characters in Call of Duty, especially with the recent Black Ops 3 and Advanced Warfare, then it’s no coincidence…at least in the latter’s case.

Sledgehammer Games co-founder and studio head Michael Condrey spoke to Games Industry International during DIE about including strong female characters in Advanced Warfare‘s campaign and how important it was to the developer.

“We’ve tried to do a lot at the studio to present strong women in our games. You’ve seen it today, that the role of women in the military is important so we tried to represent that in Advanced Warfare as a way to show that we believe there are women gamers who want to play, there are women gamers who want to develop games, there are women gamers in the military who are part of real combat around the globe, keeping us safe.”

Sledgehammer is essentially working to show their respect for female soldiers and the service they render. “It’s something we’ve tried to do and continue to do in Call of Duty.”

The developer is currently hard at work on its next project, though it will be Infinity Ward’s turn at Call of Duty this year.

"We listened" says studio co-founder Glenn Schofield.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 hasn’t been out for a month but work is currently on-going for Sledgehammer Games’ next title. Sledgehammer was responsible for last year’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, a game which introduced many intriguing changes to the series’ formula which had a mixed reaction in the community.

Studio co-founder Glenn Schofield spoke about this next game on Twitter, and stated that, “We’re designing a new game so in design mode I do art. That’s how I think. Probably weird but it’s my way of concentrating.”

Schofield also said that information will be limited right now. “Can’t talk about the game but we listened and I am so f*%#=ing stoked about this one.”

Keep in mind that it will be Infinity Ward’s turn next for a Call of Duty title. If Sledgehammer Games indeed “listened” and is working on a follow-up to Advanced Warfare, then expect that game in 2017.

What are your thoughts on a sequel to Advanced Warfare or just what Sledgehammer is up to in general? Let us know in the comments.

The MP40 and M1911 will be available on Xbox One first.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be receiving some new weapons next week on Xbox One and they should be imminently familiar to fans of the series.

The first is the M1911 pistol which has been a standard pistol in the United States from 1911 to 1986. The second is the MP40, a full automatic SMG which is also fairly accurate in bursts over distance. Both of these weapons will have four variants each and you can find them in Supply Drops or Advanced Supply Drops. Once you unlock any of the variants, the base weapon will also be yours.

Both these guns will be available in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on September 29th. They will hit Xbox One first and likely arrive on PC and PS4 next month. What are your thoughts on these weapons and on Advanced Warfare at this point, especially with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 around the corner? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more information in the coming months.
