"The final approval for Aurora and Igniculus’ next great adventure" has been sent as per director Patrick Plourde on Twitter.

Of the many interesting one-off titles that Ubisoft has released over the years, Child of Light is perhaps one of the most underrated. The platformer/turn-based RPG garnered acclaim for its visuals (courtesy of the UbiArt Framework engine) but hasn’t been on the cards for any kind of follow-up. This is despite being profitable enough to fund a sequel.

However, things could be changing next year, according to director Patrick Plourde on Twitter. He revealed that artist Thomas Rollus had sent “the final approval for Aurora and Igniculus’ next great adventure. Expect more news early next year.” This seems to indicate a sequel announcement of sorts.

It’s interesting considering Plourde’s previous stance on the matter. In 2019, he revealed that despite having an idea for where the sequel’s story should go, it wasn’t “the type of game that Ubisoft wants to make.” The publisher was noted as being all about games as a service and focusing on more mature titles. Perhaps something has changed in the interim but we’ll have to wait for more details next year.

Child of Light is available for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC and Google Stadia among other platforms. Check out our official review for it here.

Ubisoft has given away a number of free games over the past few weeks in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s repeating that same initiative but this time with all of those games – and more – free to claim on PC via Uplay. Head over to the link here and you can claim titles like Assassin’s Creed 2, Rayman Legends and Child of Light for free.

Other titles include Might and Magic Chess Royale and Rabbids Coding! These can all be claimed by May 5th so act now. Free trials for games like Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Trials Rising, The Crew 2, Ghost Recon Wildlands and The Division 1 and 2 are also available to play.

Ubisoft has plenty else going on recently with the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Gameplay for the open world title, set in the Dark Ages and focusing on Vikings, will debut on May 7th at Inside Xbox. The game itself will release for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, PC and Google Stadia this holiday season. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

The fantasy RPG series may end up being a one-hit wonder.

Child of Light was a one of a kind type of game. It was a fantasy RPG/platformer with an ATB battle system modeled after the older Final Fantasy titles, and had a unique art style in which the whole thing felt like a watercolor painting come to life. It released to critical acclaim, and we were told as early as 2014, the original year of the game’s release, that it did well enough to warrant a sequel. It seems, though, that unfortunately, that will not happen, as no sequel is likely planned or in development.

Sitting down with VGC, creative director of the first game Patrick Plourde said that at this time, Child of Light isn’t the type of game that Ubisoft is looking to make. While he has a clear idea of where he wants to go with the story, and even what the gameplay enhancements will be, it just doesn’t look likely to happen. He feels like that with such a heavy focus on the games-as-a-service model going forward, there’s not much room for that type of experience at the company right now.

“I don’t think it’s the type of game that Ubisoft wants to make,” said Plourde. “The company is not an adolescent company, it is a mature company. And the other things, in terms of portfolio, it’s still supported – we ported it on Switch and we’re still selling a bunch of copies, but it’s just that right now it’s all about games as a service. We can make money out of it, but you can make more money elsewhere. That’s the problem of not being independent while making this.”

Of course, stranger things have happened. 2003’s Beyond Good and Evil was one of the company’s most infamous flops, yet it’s on course to get a full-fledged, and what appears to be very high budget, sequel, so Child of Light’s day may come once again.

This is the kind of game that would be perfect for Switch.

Ubisoft’s Child of Light, the gorgeous fairy tale like rhyming RPG that they built using the UbiArt engine, is available now on the Nintendo Switch, and Ubisoft have put out a beautiful, dreamy launch trailer for it, showing it off in all of its splendour.

Child of Light originally came out in 2014, and was extremely well received; it’s also the kind of game that lends itself extremely well to the Switch’s pick up and play style of portable play, so I can see it getting a second lease of life on Nintendo’s hybrid as well. If you haven’t played the game already, or if you want to play it again, the Switch version might be the best way to go about it right now.

Ubisoft has also previously confirmed that Valiant Heart, another UbiArt game, this one based in the First World War, will also be coming to the Switch at some point in the future. While you wait for that and puzzle out whether or not to get Child of Light, maybe consider reading our review to help you make your mind.

Ubisoft brings its gorgeous experimental games to Nintendo's hybrid.

Ubisoft has announced that its gorgeous, experimental UbiArt projects, the beautiful RPG Child of Light, and the surprisingly introspective game on the excesses of war, Valiant Hearts: The Great War, are both going to be coming to the Nintendo Switch. Both of these games were built using the gorgeous UbiArt engine Ubisoft had designed for Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, the latter of which is already on the Switch.

Given that Ubisoft has found success on the Switch with all of its initiatives so far, and that Rayman Legends is already on the platform, I imagine these smaller projects were an easy and obvious bunch to bring to the console. Given how utterly fantastic they are, too, I am sure no one will be complaining.

For now, we don’t know if there are any Switch-specific enhancements or features in either game. Generally speaking, Ubisoft’s ports to the system have been very straightforward, so I wouldn’t bank on it. Child of Light comes to Switch on October 11, and Valiant Hearts follows less than a month later on November 8.

Following leaks that inFamous: Second Son and Child of Light would be free for PS4 as part of September’s PlayStation Plus line-up, Sony has now officially confirmed the same. It noted that PS Plus subscribers would be able to download the two games completely free starting next week.

PlayStation Plus in September features eight games as opposed to six with RIGS: Mechanized Combat League and That’s You being offered as bonus games. Other games that can be downloaded for free include Hatoful Boyfriend and We Are Doomed on PS4 and PlayStation Vita. Truck Racer and Handball 16 are available for PS3 users.

InFamous: Second Son launched in early 2014 and offered a pretty decent open world action experience on the PS4. Child of Light was developed by Ubisoft with the UbiArt Framework engine and provided a good mix of adventure and turn-based RPG combat.

They should both be available to download on September 5th (the PlayStation Store tends to update on Tuesdays) so stay tuned for more information when the free games go live.

Thanks to a Facebook ad that recently leaked, we may know what free PlayStation Plus games to look forward to in September 2017. As per Hot UK Deals, which captured a screenshot of the same, it seems that Infamous: Second Son and Child of Light will be free for PlayStation 4. Though Sony hasn’t officially confirmed the same, we could be receiving more information by either today or tomorrow since August is coming to a close.

Infamous: Second Son released in March 2014 for the PlayStation 4 and followed up on the PS3 series by taking place in a new city (Seattle) with Delsin Rowe as a new protagonist. It received standalone DLC in the form of First Light later which saw Abigail “Fetch” Walker being playable.

As for Child of Light, it was released by Ubisoft in 2014 and was essentially an RPG/platformer developed on the UbiArt Framework engine, thus providing a more whimsical cartoony art-style.

Which games are you looking forward to seeing on the PS4, PS3 and PlayStation Vita in September? Let us know in the comments.

Actually, they teased games. Plural.

Do you remember Child of Light? Released almost exactly a year ago, the game was a charming and gorgeous JRPG developed by Ubisoft’s internal teams using the UbiArt engine that powers Rayman games, and released on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Wii U.

iIt was a great game, and it ended up doing very well too. So a sequel at some point is naturally to be expected, especially given that this is Ubisoft, who are the kings of extending every single property that they have into a full fledged franchise. And now, it looks like any hopes you might have had for a new Child of Light project might be coming true- creative director Patrick Plourde has hinted at more projects set in the Child of light universe on Twitter.

‘Fans of Child of Light: There are very cool projects in process set in the Child of Light universe. More News soon. Stay tuned!’ he said.

At the very least, a direct sequel is not out of question at all.

Whatever it is, let’s hope it gets some major showtime at Ubisoft’s E3 presser this year.

Bioware’s Dragon Age: Inquisition scored another Game of the Year award at the recent SXSW Gaming Awards convention. Its last big win was at the DICE Awards.

Another big winner at DICE which scored plenty of awards at SXSW was Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. It won awards for Excellent in Gameplay, Animation and Design & Direction. Other stand-outs include Child of Light (Excellence in Art), Far Cry 4 (Excellence in Visual Achievement), Destiny (Excellence in Technical Achievement) and The Wolf Among Us (Excellence in Narrative).

Dragon Age: Inquisition continues to evolve with the recent patch 5 introducing several fixes and additions including a Party Storage chest in the Undercroft. The new Black Emporium will be added to the game in the coming months along with DLC, though whether it will continue the story or add on to the multiplayer (or both) remains to be seen.

What are your thoughts on the SXSW Gaming Awards? Let us know in the comments.

Creative producer Patrick Plourde talks about the success of Ubisoft's 2D RPG.

Ubisoft Montreal may be in the news lately for bugs swamping Assassin’s Creed: Unity and Far Cry 4 but it has seen a measure of success this year with Child of Light. The side-scrolling 2D RPG developed on the UbiArt Framework engine saw an excellent critical reception and according to creative producer Patrick Plourde in conversation with Games Industry International, it was profitable as well.

But not in the way most would think. Child of Light apparently cost a few millions to make so, “It’s not as profitable as Assassin’s Creed is profitable, but it’s profitable enough that we would have been able to fund a sequel. Or if it had been my company, I would be driving a Ferrari and doing donuts.”

Plourde also says that, “The main reason why I got greenlit on the project was because I had carte blanche for making Far Cry 3. I didn’t want to make Far Cry 3, but they said, ‘Pat, if you do that and help build that brand, we’re going to give you a free shot at the game you want.’”

This is similar to Far Cry 4 director Alex Hutchinson who was recently approved for his own personal project once the open world FPS released. Will it be as good as Child of Light? Will the sequel be as compelling visually and story-wise? We’ll find out in the coming months.
