Remedy Entertainment could be set to reveal the sequel to 2019's Control, but this announcement may be a film or a TV series.

The Game Awards are still less than two weeks away, so there’s plenty of time to learn about what’s being revealed. However, there may be something related to Remedy’s Control. MP1st has discovered a trademark in Europe for “Control Resonant,” with a filing date of November 27th.

The fact that “Nordia Attorneys at Law,” filer for all of Remedy’s trademarks, is listed could be further proof that it’s related to the paranatural action-adventure. But before you think this is Control 2, which entered full production earlier this year, it could be film or TV-related.

These are some of the tags (alongside video game services), and Remedy did announce a strategic agreement with Annapurna last year to bring Alan Wake and Control to “film, TV, and beyond.” However, if this is the video game sequel, it wouldn’t be too strange to have a cinematic trailer announcement, much like CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 4 last year.

The Game Awards take place on December 11th and is confirmed to feature a new trailer for Exodus. Another possible announcement is Death Stranding 2: On the Beach for PC, which the ESRB recently rated.

Remedy is currently focusing on "gameplay, environments, and missions" for its Control sequel, while the remakes have seen steady progress.

FBC: Firebreak is Remedy Entertainment’s first foray into co-op shooters, but for all intents and purposes, the studio remains focused on single-player titles. To that end, its two biggest upcoming titles – Control 2 and Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake – continue development, as revealed in the latest half-year financial report.

The former is currently “on track towards meeting its next milestones” with Remedy focusing on “gameplay, environments, and missions.” Officially announced in 2022 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, the sequel will be an action RPG with a lower budget (€50 million) than Alan Wake 2. Its predecessor recently crossed five million units sold.

Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake, also announced in 2022, is still in full production with the development team building “on steady momentum” during the second quarter of 2025. “Collaboration with Rockstar Games remains close and productive, ensuring alignment as the project advances toward its next major phase.”

When it will reach that phase and eventually launch remains to be seen. Again, there’s very little information on the project, but creative director Sam Lake said he wants to bring the classics “up to modern standards” and combine them into a singular experience, which is a “significant undertaking.” Stay tuned for updates in the meantime.

"If we create an excellent game and it happens to sell four million or five million units, then we are really happy," says Remedy's CEO.

Control 2 has entered full production at Remedy Entertainment, which means development on the sequel to the studio’s beloved 2019 action-adventure hit is now officially in full swing. Not long before entering this stage of production, in November last year, Remedy revealed that Control 2 was being developed on a budget of €50 million, and now, the studio has shed more light on that front.

Interestingly enough, Control 2 is being developed on a smaller budget than Alan Wake 2. Speaking with Game File, Remedy CEO Tero Virtala revealed that the 2023 survival horror title’s budget was actually “a bit higher” than what Remedy has earmarked for Control 2. “I think with that we can create excellent games,” Virtala said, and added that a game built on that budget would be able to break even even at 2 million copies sold.

“That then builds the basis that, if we create an excellent game and it happens to sell four million or five million units, then we are really happy,” he continued.

In February, Remedy Entertainment announced that Alan Wake 2 had sold over 2 million units, recouping development and marketing costs.

Ballooning development budgets have been an increasingly worrying issue for the games industry over recent years, and it’s fair to say that they’ve been a major factor in widespread industry problems, from studio closures to mass layoffs. In that context, Remedy choosing to build on the success of its last major release by building its next big game on a smaller development budget, and not instead succumbing to the desire to aim for bigger and better in every way possible, is certainly a refreshing change of pace.

Entering the production stage for Control 2 means that Remedy has completed stages of pre-productions, like the proof-of-concept stage.

Developer Remedy Entertainment has revealed that the sequel to Control is now in full production. In its annual report, Remedy has stated that development on Control 2 is now under full swing after having finished all the pre-production work on the title.

As described by Remedy’s own report, a game being in full production means that it has already wrapped up with a number of parts of the development process, from the original mandate of the game’s development being started, all the way to getting ready for production after finishing a proof-of-concept. As part of full production, Remedy estimates a time frame of between 15 and 26 months, with a team size that can range from over 75 all the way up to 200.

Along with Control 2, the company has also revealed that other titles like the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake, as well as co-op action game FBC: Firebreak also fall in the full production category.

Remedy has also stated that the initial development budget for Control 2 totals up to around €50 million. The studio also wrote about its partnership with Annapurna Pictures, who is financing 50 percent of the development costs for Control 2. In return, Annapurna Pictures gets the rights to adapt Remedy games like Control and Alan Wake into movies and TV shows.

This reveal comes a month after Remedy’s previous earnings report, when the company had said that Control 2 would be entering the full production stage soon.

While Remedy hasn’t given us too many details about Control 2 other than the fact that it will follow up on the events of the original Control, the game was seemingly teased in a DLC for Alan Wake 2. The DLC, titled The Lake House, featured protagonist Kiran Estevez getting transported to various locations from Control, including the Panopticon in the Oldest House, and even the Oceanview Hotel.

The studio has previously described Control 2 as being an action RPG. While the original Control also had a few RPG-adjacent mechanics like crafting mods for your weapons, the fact that the studio is referring to Control 2 as an action RPG would indicate that these elements might be getting expanded to feature more in-depth systems.

Alongside Control 2, the Control universe is also getting expanded thanks to spin-off FBC: Firebreak. Director Mike Kayatta has spoken about the choice for Remedy to make a multiplayer title, referring to the move as a chance for the studio to do something new.

“A lot of this is uncharted territory for us,” said Kayatta back in January. “We know we have a lot to learn to deliver on the potential we see, but there’s a lot of passion and drive behind our push into this space.”

Remedy has stated that more details about FBC: Firebreak will be revealed at the Future Games Show taking place on March 20. The game is being developed for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The studio has also previously stated that FBC: Firebreak will be a mid-priced title, and that its system requirement won’t be as extreme as Alan Wake 2.

Set after the events of Control, the co-op first-person shooter will launch later this year for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

The Future Games Show Spring Showcase airs on March 20th from the Game Developers Conference (GDC). While we know titles like System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster will receive updates, Remedy Entertainment has also confirmed FBC: Firebreak for the show.

On Bluesky, the developer told fans to “get excited” for more news, though it didn’t provide further details. It could potentially reveal a beta or even a release date. Time will tell, so stay tuned for updates.

FBC: Firebreak is out sometime this year for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5 while launching on day one for Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium. Taking place years after Control, it sees players controlling a special unit who circulate through The Oldest House and take on any threats. Despite the co-op nature of the title (which is also a first-person shooter, a Remedy first), it’s not necessarily a live-service game.

On top of being a “mid-priced” title, Remedy also confirmed that its PC requirements won’t be as steep as Alan Wake 2. Head here for more details on the team’s vision for the game.

The action RPG is ready to scale up for full production following the establishment of production pipelines per Remedy Entertainment.

Following forecasts from the previous fiscal quarter, Remedy Entertainment has revealed that Control 2 will enter full production later this month. Production pipelines have been established, and the “velocity” of asset creation is verified, with the project ready to scale up.

Announced for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC in November 2022, Control 2 is the sequel to the developer’s acclaimed supernatural action adventure. Details on its story and characters are unknown, but Remedy has confirmed it will be an action RPG. Furthermore, its budget is €50 million, with Annapurna Pictures co-financing half of it.

Control has sold over 4.5 million copies since launching in 2019. It’s available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC. Though it didn’t provide any details, Remedy teased an update for early this year, which unlocks “previously released content.” It may or may not provide additional context on an occurrence discovered last November, so stay tuned for details.

I feel we are just getting started, so I feel it's too early to start talking about an endgame," says writer and creative director Sam Lake.

With Control, Alan Wake 2, and their respective expansions (or, more specifically, their respective second expansions), Remedy Entertainment has firmly established the Remedy Connected Universe these last few years. With Control 2 now in development and the future of Alan Wake also looking quite secure, clearly the developer intends to keep expanding on this shared universe, and speaking recently with IGN, creative director and writer Sam Lake suggested the very same.

When asked about a potential endgame that the Remedy Connected Universe’s overarching story might be building towards, Lake stated that the shared universe is only “just getting started” right now, and that as such, it’s “too early” right now to talk about how things might conclude.

“I feel we are just getting started, so I feel it’s too early to start talking about an endgame,” he said. “I love tying these things together. I love making it deeper and expanding on the lore. It really feels like this kind of opportunity to take these strands that we have put there, expand, and entertain different ideas. It feels really exciting.”

According to Lake, the goal for Remedy is to ensure that each game feels like it can stand on its own feet, while also having plenty of material and expanded lore for fans of the larger universe to dive into.

“The way we are looking at it, every game needs to be enjoyable on its own and stand on its own feet,” Lake said. “But then, for our fans, for people who have been playing other Remedy games, we want to put in a lot of content for them to discover for the ongoing universe story. And also, we feel hopeful that now there is a universe and a catalog of games that we’ll be expanding as we go, hopefully for somebody playing their first Remedy game, they can continue in the universe and check out the other games as well, and dive deeper into that rabbit hole.”

Currently, Remedy Entertainment is working on Control 2, while a multiplayer spinoff, FBC: Firebreak, is also in the works. The developer is also working on Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake, though that’s unlikely to be part of the Remedy Connected Universe.

Remedy Entertainment is expecting 3-4 million units sold for Control 2 to be the mark where it doubles its investment, and 3 million for FBC: Firebreak.

Ballooning development budgets are one of the AAA games industry’s biggest issues at present, though certain developers manage to find ways to develop consistently high-quality titles on fairly reasonable budgets. Remedy Entertainment is one of the most prominent studios in that group, and it looks like it’s looking to accomplish something similar with the upcoming Control 2.

During its recent Capital Day Markets 2024 presentation, Remedy Entertainment revealed that Control 2 is being developed on a budget of about €50 million. According to the studio, the sequel, which it has confirmed is going to be an action RPG, will need to sell about 3-4 million units for Remedy to double its investment in the production. The first Control has sold over 4.5 million units, for context. It’s also worth keeping in mind that Control 2 is being co-financed by Annapurna Interactive.

Meanwhile, upcoming co-op spinoff FBC: Firebreak – which has previously been described as a mid-priced title by Remedy – has a development budget of around €30 million. The studio says it will need to sell around 3 million units for a 100 percent return on investment. It should be interesting to see whether the game can achieve those sales while also being available at no cost to PlayStation Plus and Game Pass subscribers.

Either way, both titles are significantly lower budgets than what has become the norm for the AAA industry over the years (though note this doesn’t include marketing budgets). There’s been an abundance of notable examples of games that have cost much, much more to make, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 costing $315 million, The Last of Us Part 2 and Horizon Forbidden West having budgets of $200 million each, The Callisto Protocol’s budget standing at $162 million, and Immortals of Aveum’s at $125 million.

Remedy Entertainment’s budgets have, however, been consistently lower than the industry average by a significant margin, and thankfully, that has not reflected in the quality of the games in anyway- on the contrary, one might argue Control and Alan Wake 2 are among the best games to have been released in the last decade.

The highly anticipated sequel to Control is in development for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. It will enter full production in 2025.

With the ending of Alan Wake 2: The Lake House teasing it and Remedy confirming the start of full production in 2025, Control 2’s development is starting to pick up steam. There’s very little known about the sequel besides Annapurna Pictures co-financing it. However, the developer confirmed something unexpected at this year’s Capital Markets Day: Control 2 will be an action RPG.

On the surface, this could mean implementing aspects like gear, leveling, stats, and whatnot. The first game offers Ability Points earned from various side missions, which are used to upgrade different abilities unlocked throughout the game. Weapon and Personal Mods also come in different rarities, raising in effectiveness.

Whether the sequel will expand on these elements, go full looter shooter, or something else remains to be seen. Though it doesn’t have a release date, Control 2 is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Remedy is also working on FBC: Firebreak, a multiplayer co-op spin-off set years after the first game. It launches next year and will be a “mid-priced” title.

The sequel to Remedy Entertainment's acclaimed shooter is continuing to make good progress behind the scenes, as per the developer.

With Alan Wake 2 and its post-launch expansions now firmly in Remedy Entertainment’s rearview mirror, all eyes are now on the future projects that the developer has in its pipeline, with Control 2 – officially confirmed to be in development back in 2022 – being of particular interest to many. Fans of the acclaimed 2019 original, in fact, will be happy to know that its sequel is continuing to make good progress behind the scenes.

That’s as per Remedy Entertainment itself, which has stated in its recent quarterly earnings report that Control 2 is continuing development in the production readiness stage, which it entered earlier this year, and that, thanks to the progress it is making, the project is on track to enter full production at some point next year.

“Control 2 has progressed well in the production readiness stage and is on track to start full production during 2025. Many of the critical features of the game have been implemented to mitigate production risk, and workflows and pipelines are being tested in preparation for full production,” the company says.

Control 2 is going to be self-published by Remedy Entertainment. The sequel was seemingly teased at the end of the recently released Alan Wake 2 DLC, The Lake House, with glimpses apparently being showcased at the very end. Read more on that through here.

In addition to Control 2, Remedy Entertainment is currently also working on co-op Control spinoff FBC: Firebreak and Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake.
