PS5 Pro players can also take advantage of PSSR support and benefit from improved screen space reflections in Performance Mode.

As promised by Remedy Entertainment, Control Ultimate Edition on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 has been updated with the same patch released for PC players earlier this year. It includes three outfits previously available as pre-order exclusives and Dr Yoshimi Tokui’s Guided Imagery Experience, voiced by legendary director Hideo Kojima.

All this seemed a given, but there are also some new graphics and performance settings to play with. Support for Variable Refresh Rate and 120Hz displays has been added for PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X/S. The frame rate limits on Quality and Performance Modes have also been removed for all consoles (except for Series S, which only saw the same for the latter).

If that wasn’t enough, you can now enable HDR and take advantage of PSSR, improved screen space reflections, updated texture filtering and more on PS5 Pro. Remedy warns that PSSR can “slightly” affect performance, but there’s an option to switch it off if so desired.

Check out the full patch notes below. For more details on Control Ultimate Edition, you can read our review.

Released earlier this year on PC, it adds a previously Digital Deluxe Edition-exclusive mission on PS4 with voiceovers by Hideo Kojima.

Remember when Remedy Entertainment released a free update for Control Ultimate Edition earlier this year on PC? After promising a “near future” release date for consoles, it’s confirmed to launch on October 6th for Xbox Series X/S and PS5.

The update includes Dr Yoshimi Tokui’s Guided Imagery Experience, a mission exclusive to the Digital Deluxe Edition on PS4. This is perhaps best known for Hideo Kojima, creator of Metal Gear and Death Stranding, providing voiceovers.

Of course, it also adds features like HDR and support for ultrawide monitors, but that’s on PC. Whether consoles will receive the SDR update and fixes for texture streaming and ray tracing remains to be seen. Stay tuned for patch notes on Monday.

Released in 2019 for PS4, PC, and Xbox One before launching on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5, Control has sold over five million units. A sequel, Control 2, is currently in development for current-gen platforms, having entered full production earlier this year.

Remedy's acclaimed supernatural action-adventure continues to see strong sales following its 2019 launch on consoles and PC.

While FBC: Firebreak floundered in sales, Remedy Entertainment’s Control continues to see strong sales. In the company’s half-year financial report, it revealed that the third-person shooter crossed five million units in the quarter ending June 30th, 2025. It crossed 4.5 million sales last year.

The milestone is all the more significant since it regained the rights to publishing, marketing and distribution earlier this year. “We’ve now been able to drive Control’s sales activities fully by ourselves and have seen positive development through our sales activities.”

Launched in 2019, Control focuses on Jesse Faden, who visits the Federal Bureau of Control to search for her brother and becomes caught up in its invasion by The Hiss. Utilizing psychic powers, she helps the Bureau fight back while learning more about her own powers. Check out our review for the base game and its two expansions – The Foundation and AWE. You can also check out our thoughts on the Ultimate Edition.

Meanwhile, Alan Wake 2 continues to “sell steadily” and “accrue royalty,” while the sales for other titles in the franchise are “in line with our expectations and generate small and steady revenue streams.” The survival horror crossed two million units as of December 31st, 2025 and recouped all marketing and development costs.

Xbox Game Pass Core subscribers can also play SnowRunner, Control: Ultimate Edition, and Cities: Skylines from August 21st.

After rumors of the same last month, Microsoft has confirmed that Deck13’s Atlas Fallen will join Game Pass as part of August’s second wave. The action RPG will be available starting August 22nd for Xbox Series X/S, cloud and PC players. Head here for more details on its recent Reign of Sand update.

The other blockbuster addition is the early access open beta for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Available to download starting August 28th, the beta will be playable from August 30th to September 4th. Since one must otherwise pre-order the title to obtain access, this is a pretty sweet deal for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers.

Other noteworthy releases include Core Keeper, a sandbox survival adventure for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and cloud on August 27th (the same day it exits early access). Star Trucker also arrives on September 3rd for cloud, console, and PC. Xbox Game Pass Core subscribers can also look forward to Cities: Skylines, SnowRunner, and Control: Ultimate Edition on August 21st.

Check out the titles leaving the service on August 31st:

Remedy Entertainment provides an update on the continued success of Control, with a sequel in the early stages of development and a co-op spinoff also in the works.

Control was easily among the best games of 2019, and the critical success enjoyed by Remedy Entertainment’s action-adventure title has been reflected in commercial success as well. In their recent fiscal report, the developer confirmed that the game has amassed more than 10 million players since launch. There’s no word on exactly how many units the game has sold, though as of the end of 2020, that number stood at 2 million.

As such, it should come as no surprise that the Finnish developer is investing heavily in the Control IP, thanks to a continued partnership with publisher 505 Games. A 4-player co-op PvE spinoff of Control called Condor, which was announced quite recently, is in development. Meanwhile, Remedy also reiterates that “a future, bigger-budget Control game”, most likely to be a sequel, has also moved into the early stages of development, or as the developer calls it, “the early conception phase.”

Control is currently available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia, and as a cloud-exclusive release for Nintendo Switch. Read our review of the original game through here, and our review of the Ultimate Edition re-release for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S through here.

2019’s Control was quite the title for Remedy Entertainment. In many ways it was an accumulation of many of their various themes and gameplay tropes blended into quite the package. The game made its full next gen debut this month, but not without some issues. Seems Remedy is on board to try and fix that.

Remedy’s Communications Director Thomas Puha took to Twitter to say that the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will get an update to address the crashes and other mission-related bugs that is planned to release today. As of now the update has not gone live as of writing this, but should soon. Puha also says to expect them to continue investigating the issues many have reported on the Xbox side of things for a later update.

Control: Ultimate Edition is available now on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC. It is also available for free this month to PS Plus subscribers.

Expect an update for Control Ultimate Edition on Wednesday for PS5 and Series X|S. It fixes some of the crash issues on X|S and mission related bugs.

A solid enhancement of an excellent game.

In 2019, Remedy released what is probably their best game to date with Control, a stellar metroidvania third person shooter with a riveting story that also paved the way for what’s likely going to be an ambitious shared universe roping in games from the developer’s past and its future. Now, less than two years on from its original launch, Control is coming to ninth generation consoles, hoping to leverage their more powerful hardware and deliver a better looking and better performing version of an already excellent game. How successfully does it manage to do that?

In one word: very. Control was already an excellent looking game even on base PS4 and Xbox One consoles when it first came out not that long ago, and on the PS5, which is what I played Control: Ultimate Edition on, it looks even better. Meanwhile, boosts to the game’s performance have also addressed one of the original release’s bigger issues, resulting in a smoother experience that lets the game’s biggest qualities shine even brighter.

"In graphics mode, Control’s visuals really pop. While it’s not a night and day difference when compared to the game’s base PS4 or Xbox One versions, the improvement is still easily visible."

Like many other games, Control: Ultimate Edition offers two graphical options: a performance mode, which runs at 60 FPS and 1440p upscaled to 4K, and a graphics mode, which runs at 30 FPS and the same resolution, while also offering ray-tracing. In graphics mode, Control’s visuals really pop. While it’s not a night and day difference when compared to the game’s base PS4 or Xbox One versions, the improvement is still easily visible. Textures are sharper, character models and faces look more detailed, and finer details in the environments are more pronounced.

The headlining addition here is, of course, ray-tracing, with everything from polished walls and floors to transparent glass surfaces boasting ray-traced reflections, allowing the game’s impressive lighting to flourish even more. While ray-tracing in Control: Ultimate Edition isn’t anywhere close to being as good as Control’s RTX on a high-end PC, it looks solid enough, and does contribute to making the game look visibly better, rather than simply adding cursory improvements.

That said, for my money, performance mode is the best possible way to play Control. Barring ray-tracing, all of the visual enhancements are available in performance mode as well, while the game also runs at a 60 frames per second frame rate. Control is a game that’s defined by fast, bombastic, frenetic action, and while better performance is preferable to better visuals in any game, that’s doubly true in games like this one. Control: Ultimate Edition doesn’t always stick to its 60 FPS target, but the frame rate drops are largely minor and infrequent.

"Playing the game at 60 FPS is a blissful experience, and allows the eye-popping action to really shine."

By and large, playing the game at 60 FPS is a blissful experience, and allows the eye-popping action to really shine. Graphics mode also maintains a steady 30 FPS though, and in my time with the game, there were hardly any frame rate drops there, so if you absolutely do not want to miss out on ray-tracing, you can rest assured that you’ll still get a solid baseline level of performance. Frequent and drastic frame rate stutters were a major issue in Control at launch, especially on base consoles, so it’s good to see that being addressed so emphatically here.

Meanwhile, on the PS5, the game also features support for the DualSense’s haptics and adaptive triggers. There isn’t much to say about the former (there’s only so much you can say about how intensely the controller vibrates on your hand depending on whether your character is walking on tiles or on carpets), but the adaptive triggers are used to great effect, with the triggers offering different levels of tension and resistance with every pull of the trigger based on what form of the Service Weapon you’re using in a firefight. It’s not a highlight of the experience, but it’s good enough that it deserves to be mentioned.

Meanwhile, with the excellent base game and both of its expansions included in a single package, Control: Ultimate Edition is lacking neither in content nor in quality. The two expansions – The Foundation and AWE – don’t really touch the highs of the base game, but they’re still solid additions to the experience, and the latter in particular opens the door for an exciting shared Remedy universe. If you haven’t played the DLCs before, this is a great chance to do so. It is, of course, disappointing that publisher 505 Games hasn’t offered free next-gen upgrades to those who already have Control on PS4 or Xbox One. As such, even with the visual and performance improvements, I wouldn’t recommend dropping another $40 on a game you already own (if you do already own it). For newcomers though, this is a must-buy.

"With the excellent base game and both of its expansions included in a single package, Control: Ultimate Edition is lacking neither in content nor in quality."

Being less than two years old, Control wasn’t really in need of a radical reworking or an ambitious remaster. Control: Ultimate Edition is a pretty conservative upgrade, but the improvements it does make are solid. A pretty game is made prettier still, and the improved performance means that Control’s excellent action and shooting feel better and more kinetic than they ever have on a console in the past. If you haven’t yet played Remedy’s newest classic, wait no longer- Control: Ultimate Edition is the best way to do so.

Here are some of the biggest games out next month.

After a relative lull, February 2021 is set to offer a number of big titles, from ports and remasters to exclusives. Whether you’re a fan of platformers, RPGs or vehicular mayhem, there’s something for everyone. Let’s take a look at the 10 big upcoming games for the month.

The Nioh Collection (PS5)

Team Ninja’s critically acclaimed Nioh series is coming to PlayStation 5 on February 5th, the same day that Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition launches for PS4 and PC. The Nioh Collection offers much more though, bundling Nioh Remastered – The Complete Edition and Nioh 2 Remastered – The Complete Edition together. Both games with all DLC and updates are included along with 4K/60 FPS and 1080p/120 FPS modes. They’ll also take advantage of the PS5’s SSD for super-fast loading times and the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The $70 price tag is always pretty hefty, even for PS5 games, but it’s hard to argue against the value of The Nioh Collection.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood

Based off of White Wolf Publishing’s tabletop RPG, Cyanide’s Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood takes a more action-oriented approach with its gameplay. As Cahal, you’re fighting against the evil Pentex corporation, taking on missions in the American Northwest and even venturing to the spirit world for additional challenges. The main appeal is the shape-shifting – Cahal can choose between human, Lupus and Crinos modes, either sneaking and stalking his prey as a regular wolf or going berserk as a werewolf. The World of Darkness series hasn’t had the most stellar of releases in recent years but Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood could break the curse when it launches on February 4th for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5 and PC.

Ys 9: Monstrum Nox

More than three years after his last adventure, Adol Christin returns in Ys 9: Monstrum Nox. Instead of washing ashore on a strange island for the millionth time, Adol finds himself trapped in the prison city of Balduq and involved with the mysterious Monstrum. Much like Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana, players can control multiple party members with differing styles. Movement has also been expanded to be more free-form and vertical. Ys 9 is out on February 2nd for PS4 – hopefully, the English localization won’t be a complete disaster like the previous game.

Little Nightmares 2

Little Nightmares 2 goes beyond The Maw and ventures to The Pale City with the bag-wearing Mono as the new protagonist. Six is still around but this time controlled via AI (and with no co-op available). The two will venture through various locales, solving puzzles and avoiding creepy figures like The Teacher and The Hunter en route to the Signal Tower. Who is the Tall Man and what is his plan? We’ll likely find out when Little Nightmares 2 launches on February 11th on PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Continuing its trend of re-releasing Wii U titles for the Switch is Nintendo’s Super Mario 3D World. While it’s still the same excellent 3D platformer with improved visuals, the big difference is the addition of Bowser’s Fury. This new experience sees Mario and Bowser Jr. traveling to Lake Lapcat, a new free-roam area, to stop the rampaging Bowser. Along with collecting new Cat Shines, Bowser Jr. – who can be controlled by another player – can join in and attack foes. This is all for the sake of the Super Bell which Mario can use to turn into Giga Cat Mario and take on Fury Bowser in a true clash of the titans. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is out on February 12th for Switch.

Persona 5 Strikers

Omega Force’s Musou-style of gameplay is back again but hits a bit different in Persona 5 Strikers. Developed along with P-Studio, it features real-time combat along with pausing for utilizing Personas. Much of the gameplay from Persona 5, like switching between and fusing different Personas, the Third Eye and All-Out Attacks make a return. The story also takes place six months afterwards with the Phantom Thieves traveling to a strange new version of Tokyo to battle Shadows. Persona 5 Strikers arrives on February 23rd for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PC.

Control: Ultimate Edition (PS5, Xbox Series X/S)

Control has been available since 2019 while the Ultimate Edition launched for PC, Xbox One and PS4 last year. However, it launches for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on February 2nd, allowing new console owners to experience the supernatural adventure at last. Along with the base game and two expansions, The Foundation and AWE, there will be two graphics modes to choose from. Performance Mode offers 60 FPS gameplay while Graphics Mode runs at 30 FPS with ray-tracing and material quality improvements. If you haven’t played Control yet, then the Ultimate Edition is well worth picking up (even with the controversy surrounding the lack of upgrades for base game owners).

Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Resurrection

The return of Ghosts ‘n Goblins isn’t the most expected surprise of the year but it is definitely welcome. Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Resurrection is based on the first two entries in the series – Ghosts ‘n Goblins and Ghouls ‘n Ghosts – and features revamped visuals. Despite “taking cues” from those titles to create “something entirely new” as per Capcom, the brutal difficulty of the gameplay is still intact. Along with Knight Mode, there are two other paths – Squire and Page – for relatively newer players to jump in while Legend Mode promises the toughest challenge. Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Resurrection is out on February 25th exclusively for Nintendo Switch.

Bravely Default 2

Another big Switch exclusive is Bravely Default 2, developed by Claytechworks and presenting a brand new story and cast. Much of the same gameplay carries over, like the turn-based combat, Brave Point system and the ability to change characters’ Jobs. The overall presentation looks incredible, whether it’s Savalon, the Land of Drought with its sweeping desert, or Wizwald, the Land of Magic, with its forestation overrunning civilization. Bravely Default 2 releases on February 26th for Switch but you can download and try out the Final Demo now to see how it plays.

Destruction AllStars

Originally slated for the PS5’s launch, Lucid Games’ vehicular combat title is finally out this February. It’s also going to be available free to PlayStation Plus subscribers for two months but what exactly can you expect? For starters, there’s a roster of 16 AllStars to choose from, each with their own unique abilities. Matches are all about wrecking other racers but if you’re wrecked, there’s still a chance to come back. Each AllStar can dodge incoming attacks and eventually commandeer a new vehicle to continue with Hero Vehicles eventually turning the tide. Four game modes are available at launch – Mayhem, Carnado, Stockpile and Gridfall – which can be played offline with AI or online in multiplayer. Unique challenges against AI foes will also be available for unlocking new cosmetics and additional game modes, events and seasons are coming post-launch.

While the PS5 and Xbox Series X are largely similar in terms of their hardware capabilities, the PS5 does have a few specific features that its competitor doesn’t have. As such, there’s always the question of how those features are going to be utilized in multiplatform releases. One such game is the upcoming Control: Ultimate Edition, and publisher 505 Games have detailed some of those features.

On the support page for the publisher’s website, it has been confirmed that on the PS5, Control: Ultimate Edition will feature support for the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Additionally, the OS-level features such as Game Help (which lets players access guides and walkthrough clips while playing the game) and Activities will also be supported.

Control: Ultimate Edition’s frame rate and resolution targets on all the new consoles were also recently confirmed. On both PS5 and Xbox Series X, the game will target 60 FPS performance with 1440p render resolution and 4K output in Performance Mode, and 30 FPS performance with 1440p render resolution and 4K output with ray-tracing in Graphics Mode. On Xbox Series S, the game will only have a Performance Mode, targeting 60 FPS performance with 900p render resolution and 1080p output.

Control: Ultimate Edition is out for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on February 2. The game will also be available for free for all PlayStation Plus subscribers in February.

2019’s Control was quite the special game. From Remedy Entertainment, the developers of such beloved gems as Alan Wake and the Max Payne series, it was in many ways an accumulation of all of their various themes and gameplay mechanics. While it seemed to start off to something of a slow start, the game ended up doing pretty well for itself. Despite releasing in 2019, the game saw plenty of attention in 2020 with expansion packs, being on Xbox Game Pass, and an Ultimate Edition re-release. Remedy also was keen to show off what everyone did that year, too.

The developer shared an infographic of what was done in 2020, and there’s quite a lot of stats there. The game was beaten 552,643 times, but Jesse was defeated by 58,910,239 enemies. Probably the biggest stat, unsurprisingly, is the crazy amount of furniture that got thrown around, with a staggering 1,847,145,550 items getting slung around the place. You can see the full stats below.

Control: Ultimate Edition, which collects the base game and all DLC, is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. A PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version is scheduled to come February 2nd.
