It was many moons ago that Square Enix released Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for the Nintendo Gamecube. The quirky title spanned a brief subseries in the legendary franchise on Nintendo systems, and now many years later the game is set to make a return with a new remastered edition. However, it will lack at least one feature it had back in those days.

As posted on the official Twitter and translated by Twitter user Robert Sephazon, it was confirmed the game would not have a local multiplayer and co-op option. The only reason given is “development issues.” The original Gamecube version did have local multiplayer, but it also required multiple GBAs and connector cables to connect to the system to use as controllers. Whether that has any relevancy here is anyone’s guess, but it seems if you want to play multiplayer you’ll have to do it online.

Earlier in the year, we got the announcement that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles would finally be re-released on modern hardware with a remaster. Originally, it was slated to come by the end of 2019, but suffered a delay to the beginning of 2020. Well, unfortunately, it’s time for yet another delay, one that’s more ambiguous, into the next year.

As announced via the official Twitter, the game has now been pushed back to the time frame Summer of 2020 with no solid date. The decision was made to give the development team more time. It also seems the delay will come with cross save support across all platforms for when the game does actually release.

The original game released on the Gamecube and had a unique multiplayer mode that required having multiple Game Boy Advances to control. The remaster was set to streamline that for more accessibility as well as improved visuals. But it seems we’ll have to wait a bit longer to revisit the game when it releases next year.

Capcom won’t be the only publisher present at the upcoming Jump Festa 2020 in Chiba this month. Square Enix has confirmed its presence and also released a list of games that will be appearing. Among these are Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Trials of Mana, both which will receive new trailers.

But that’s not all. Mobile titles Dragon Quest of the Stars, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius will also be present. If that’s not your thing, then the long awaited Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition will also receive a new trailer ahead of its January 2020 release.

With Tokyo Game Show around the corner, Square Enix has released a new trailer for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition. It also announced a release date of January 23rd 2020 and that the title will be coming to PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android worldwide. Check out the game in action below.

The Remastered Edition will sport a number of new features like cross-platform play, the ability to transfer save data across platforms and four player online play. Features-wise, there are new items, new variant skins for each tribe’s characters and even end-game dungeons and bosses. Even new character voices have been recorded.

But wait, there’s more – new songs and a new recorded narration also await. It’s somewhat odd to not see a PC version announced but perhaps that will come after the console and mobile launch. Stay tuned for more details at the Tokyo Game Show, which starts on September 12th and ends on September 15th.

Thankfully, Square Enix didn’t just show up at E3 2019 with Final Fantasy 7 Remake (along with a hefty amount of information on combat). It also announced that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition, announced last year, would be out this Winter for Nintendo Switch and PS4. Check out the newest trailer below.

Along with improved visuals, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition will also sport new content and voice acting. Changes are also being made to multiplayer for allowing online remote play. After all, you can’t just connect your Game Boy Advances into the console in 2019.

Though a more solid release date will likely be revealed later, it’s good to see Square Enix didn’t forget about the remaster.
