"The games and experiences that these four studios have planned are incredible," teases the publisher and each maintains creative autonomy.

Following its floating on the London Stock Exchange’s AIM market and a reported investment by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Devolver Digital has confirmed the acquisition of three key studios. These are Dodge Roll, known for the Enter the Gungeon series; Nerial of Reigns fame (who’s also working on Card Shark); and Firefly Studios which develops the Stronghold series.

In a new post announcing its publicly traded nature, the publisher said, “Those developers and our team looked ahead and saw that we’d be working together forever so we lovingly acquired them, mostly so they would hang out with us more. The games and experiences that these four studios have planned are incredible and each maintain their full creative autonomy afforded to them throughout our relationship.” Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing Enter the Gungeon 2 from Dodge Roll any time soon (and Devolver has asked them “more than once”).

Valued at $950 million currently, Devolver Digital has quite a lot in the pipeline. There’s Flying Wild Hog’s Shadow Warrior 3 and Trek to Yomi, WolfEye Studios’ Weird West, Galvanic Games’ Wizard with a Gun and Massive Monster’s Cult of the Lamb coming next year. It also recently published Daniel Mullins’ Inscryption for PC. Stay tuned for more announcements – and potentially more shocking Devolver Directs – in the coming year.

Firefly Studios ran into "unexpected issues" with multiplayer and needs more time.

Firefly Studios’ Stronghold: Warlords has received another delay. Originally slated to release on January 26th, it’s now been delayed to March 9th. This is after it was delayed from its September 2020 release date. The prime cause of the second delay is multiplayer.

According to the developer on Twitter, the multiplayer mode is “simply not ready to be released yet.” It ran into some “unexpected issues” and needs more time to fix them. While it contemplated delayed multiplayer and releasing it a future update, the developer wants to stick to its promise of having multiplayer ready for launch and providing a “full experience.”

Stronghold: Warlords offers quite a bit in terms of multiplayer functionality. Two players can team up and fight the AI or even work together to manage a castle with one person managing the army and the other working on the economy. Along with the campaign and multiplayer, Steam Workshop support will also be available at launch for user-created maps. Hopefully, more gameplay will be provided in the coming weeks before launch so stay tuned.

FireFly Studios’ Stronghold: Warlords has received a release date – it’s out on September 29th for PC. The latest trailer also showcases the game’s multiplayer battles, which can become quite insane when all the different armies get involved. Check it out below.

In a press release, marketing director Nick Tannahill spoke a bit more about the multiplayer options. Players can either team up together and battle the AI or they can cooperatively manage a castle. “For instance, one player could handle the economy from the start while the other builds up an army. Then later during a siege that player could control defensive units like the Fire Lancer and Archers, while the other triggers castle traps and puts out fires,” says Tannahill.

Stronghold: Warlords will offer more than just a campaign and multiplayer at launch. There will also be support for the Steam Workshop so that players can create their own maps and scenarios to share with others. Given the number of strategy titles that support user-created content, it’s good to see Stronghold: Warlords also offering the same.

Unlike previous games in the series, Stronghold: Warlords takes place in 3rd century BC China and involves the Shogunate, the Mongol Empire and other forces vying for control. Along with fire lancers, players will also have samurai and bowmen to field. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Firefly Studios has announced that it will be bringing Stronghold Crusader 2 to E3 2013. The game will debut afterwards to the public with a gameplay trailer and screenshots. Firefly is planning to bring new maps, unit classes, castle designs and much more to the signature gameplay of the series.

Marketing Manager Nick Tannahill stated that, “The Stronghold series has been a huge success. Since the launch of the first game more than 6 million Stronghold games have been sold and it’s all thanks to the fans, many of whom have been with us from the very start.

“We can’t wait to show people what we’ve been working on and will do just that with our E3 reveal. I’m happy to announce that we will also be launching the full Crusader 2 website on June 11 th, which will feature the game’s first trailer, artwork and more”.

Stronghold Crusader 2 will also be published by Firefly Studios, and debut in Q4 2013. A closed, backer-only beta (for those who contributed to funding via Gambitious) and additional content is currently in the pipeline for the next few months.
