Rockstar Games' subscription service has seemingly added the Nintendo Switch as a platform on the company's official website.

GTA+, Rockstar Games monthly subscription service, might be headed to the Nintendo Switch. The service, which launched in 2022, is currently available for PlayStation and Xbox, with subscribers getting access to a revolving lineup of Rockstar titles, as well as in-game bonuses and rewards in Grand Theft Auto Online. Soon, it might be making its way over to Nintendo’s platform as well.

Spotted by Rockstar insider Tez2 on Twitter, Rockstar Games’ official website seems to have updated the list of platforms that those subscribed to GTA+ will get games at no additional cost on. The Nintendo Switch is now seemingly included in that list, even if it’s not currently being actually used, indicating that it could seen be made available to those on Nintendo’s platform.

Rockstar titles available on the Switch that could be offered to subscribers include Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, and L.A. Noire. Of course, with Nintendo set to unveil is next console at some point before April next year, one also has to wonder whether this is tied to that rather than the exiting Switch model.

Activity in the Steam backend seems to suggest that Rockstar is working on an upcoming patch for the remastered trilogy.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was as close as we’ve got to a major new GTA release in a decade, and it was roundly criticized by players and critics upon its launch in 2021, owing to the technical state that it launched in and the less-than-ideal “improvements” it made to three bona fide classics. Even now, the remastered trilogy remains in a state where there’s plenty of room for polishing and improvements- and it seems some of those could be coming in soon, on PC at least.

As spotted by @videotechuk_ on Twitter, recent activity on Gand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition’s SteamDB page suggests that Rockstar has been working on new fixes for the remaster on Steam. As the user points out, the SteamDB changelog suggests that this is “actual, real activity”, not just something related to changing encryption keys, something that you see quite often with games.

When this update will arrive and whether it will be targeting all platforms remains to be seen.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definition Edition is currently available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.

Rockstar appear to be developing a new patch for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, according to recent activity on SteamDB – likely the new fixes and improvements from the mobile port.

Worse still though, it appears as though The Trilogy has been abandoned by Rockstar and Take Two Interactive.

Let’s answer the question immediately: is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition finally fixed, after two years of patch updates following a more-than-sloppy initial release? In a word, no.

However, the playability of each entry will always vary between players. Texture pop-ins and absent collision detection might be amusing to some and downright immersion ruining to others whilst game breaking bugs – which, to be fair have since been patched – such as the invincible bazooka wielding maniac on the rooftop in Los Desperados or T-Bone the bullet sponge in GTA: San Andreas’ “Pier 69” mission didn’t occur for everyone. A quick scan through various subreddits and there are players who lament the aging mechanics of the original games but by and large report them as playable, completable, and above all else, they’re enjoyable. But for everyone who expected a Definitive Edition of Rockstar’s iconic titles, well, we’ve still a way to go.

The most recent patch, version 1.04.5, was released October 18th, 2022, but it’s been radio silence ever since then. The patch notes for this specific update make for slim reading too, with stability improvements across all platforms the only stated additions. We must go all the way back to February 2022 and patch update 1.04 to find a significant list of improvements. Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition improved collision detection across multiple locations including the formerly solid, drivable lake in Belleville Park, fixed issues relating to the awarding of achievements, repaired problems of tanks spawning without doors, and reinstated missing features which should have been there from the off such as the ability to hold the sprint button to perform a partial sprint when using tap to sprint. Likewise, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition saw fixes to collision and texture detection in patch 1.04, plus fixed the issue of the player failing the mission “Cop Land” should the café blow up, and the issue of the player not failing the mission when they die during “Cannon Fodder”. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition saw the aforementioned invincible T-Bone be patched in version 1.04 alongside a raft of attention to detail fixes ranging from traffic lights not appearing, music continuing to play outdoors, building debris remaining after reloading and – most crucially – the gap in CJ’s high afro hairstyle being filled in.

These are just a brief cross-section of the changes brought to The Trilogy in patch 1.04, and whilst the improvements are extensive, they still don’t close the book of issues prevalent in these remasters. The fact the 1.04 update came a full three months after release is unforgiveable for some too, given Rockstar’s bottomless pit of wealth they’ve accumulated considering GTA V and its online counterpart’s ongoing success. These games are legendary, and they should have been given the budget, time, and resources Rockstar has at their disposal to bring them bang up to date.

For their part, Rockstar at least addressed the shoddy state of these remasters by apologising days after release. Their statement reads: “The updated versions of these classic games did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect. We have ongoing plans to address the technical issues and to improve each game going forward. With each planned update, the games will reach the level of quality that they deserve to be.”

Their ongoing plans? Well, principally, their plans were presumably to remove developer Grove Street Games from the project entirely, which they eventually did in late 2022. They had to be seen to be doing something, right? Getting rid of Grove Street Games kind of implies the responsibility for the lacklustre standard of these remasters lands squarely at their door, but the strange thing is why has there been no update to GTA: The Trilogy since then? Aren’t Rockstar interested in fixing the problems that still exist?

And yes, whilst these remasters are playable, completable, enjoyable, and in places look pretty good, Vice City especially, bugs and visual glitches persist. As reported in February 2023, lampposts and streetlights still disappear into invisible sink holes when driven into (weird seeing as this wasn’t ever a problem in the originals), fog and cloud cover is still non-existent across San Andreas, massively reducing the nostalgic atmosphere the game is fondly remembered for.

Rain was amongst the most notable issues when The Trilogy first released; white laser raindrops so heavy they completely cover the screen, masking the way forward. Whilst the impenetrable rain was patched early on, strange water-based artefacts remain – certain interiors leak from the ceiling, as if rain can now somehow seep through buildings; interior surfaces glisten as if slick with rainwater. At this stage, it appears these problems will never get fixed. Floating cars, grass growing through concrete, UI present in cutscenes, rain indoors – the list goes on. One major problem that still needs correcting are the gamma settings – lighting is distracting at best and downright impossible to see through at worst. Some cutscenes are so dark it’s impossible to see who they’re featuring. Although, this isn’t such a bad thing in every case as character designs are oftentimes a visage of paper mache babies. These visual oddities would be comical if The Trilogy wasn’t comprised of such famous games.

And that’s the thing, these games are so famous, and so well loved, that a graphical refresh is probably all that was required to satisfy fans. The bar for acceptability wasn’t especially high. Same game, better graphics, that’s all they needed. The age-related flaws prevalent in these titles would be accepted given that The Trilogy is a trio of remasters, not remakes. But the introduction of problems that didn’t even exist in the originals is simply not acceptable. Additionally, the fact so many of these problems remain unfixed is unnecessarily frustrating.

It’ll be interesting to see the state of these games once they’re available on iOS and Android. Pre-registering for The Trilogy on these platforms opened on December 1st, with the games landing on phones and tablets via Netflix on December 14th. Is this where Rockstar have been pooling their resources? Will these mobile versions release problem free? Based on the current state of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition it seems unlikely. And it’s a massive shame to be so negative. We all want these remasters to function perfectly, but it seems unlikely at this stage that they ever will.

If we’re being optimistic, the launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on mobile might provide the springboard for a final, definitive patch that’ll fix the console and PC versions once and for all.

As mentioned elsewhere in this feature mileage for playability will vary between players. If you’re okay with texture pop-ins, non-existent collision detection, and the chance of immersion breaking bugs, then knock yourself out. These games are still special. It might be worth holding out for a sale though, as given the persistent disappointing state of these remasters, the asking price for The Trilogy plainly isn’t worth it.

Over a year on from its original launch, the troubled remastered trilogy seems to be making its way to additional PC platforms.

It’s fair to say that Rockstar didn’t handle Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition with the sort of care and attention that a release of its magnitude deserved, and even though it was quite successful from a commercial standpoint, critically speaking, the remastered trilogy doesn’t exactly have the best reputation. If, however, you’re looking to jump in and give it a go, on PC, soon you’re likely to be able to do it through more than just the Rockstar Launcher.

Whether that means it will also be coming to Steam at the same time remains to be seen, but it would make sense if that were the case.

In our review of the remastered trilogy, we gave it a score of 6/10, saying, “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition can be fun to play thanks to the inherent strengths of the three all-time classics it remasters, but the remastering itself feels shoddy, thoughtless, and rushed.” Read the full review through here.

We put together 15 of the worst games on the PS5 you should avoid.

The PS5 has been out for more than two years at this point, and while there has been no shortage of games that have touched remarkable heights – there have been plenty of disappointments to go along with them too. To that end, we present 15 of the worst PS5 games of all time.

Before starting with the list, it’s important to acknowledge that our opinion of these games is subjective – so while we may find them to be disappointing, you could have had a great time with them regardless. And if that’s the case, more power to you!

With that out of the way, let’s begin:

Godfall

When Counterplay Games showcased Godfall for the first time, it seemed like a great RPG with spectacular visuals and addictive combat. But when it was finally released, it turned out to be a disappointing experience that was rife with apparent flaws all around. The game is plagued with repetitive gameplay and uninteresting loot mechanics – all of which result in an experience that’s not worth sinking your teeth into.

Rustler

Jutsu Games tried to mix medieval elements with the chaotic top-down action of the original Grand Theft Auto games with Rustler, and while that combination certainly sounds enchanting – the end result is anything but. Rustler suffers from all kinds of issues ranging from poor game design to bland missions to technical issues and so much more. There are some cool ideas here, but they crumble under the weight of the shoddy moment-to-moment gameplay which makes the entire package a big disappointment.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition aims to bring the experience of the PS2 era GTA games to a modern gaming landscape, and it could have been so much better if the developers put a little bit of effort towards it all. What fans got was an underwhelming package filled to the brim with bugs, glitches, and improvements that felt more like downgrades from the original experience. It’s easily one of the biggest disappointments of recent memory, and Rockstar’s conscious decision to keep vital information hidden from the public up until launch also made the whole situation so much worse.

In Nightmare

Maximum Games’ In Nightmare tries to instill the same feelings of distress and constant tension as Little Nightmares, but it fails to achieve that design goal by a significant margin. And that can largely be attributed to poor puzzle design that hinges on being frustrating throughout the entire experience, and a narrative that doesn’t have much in terms of interesting plot revelations or twists or really anything doesn’t help the game’s case either.

Balan Wonderworld

While post-release reports have shed more light on the disastrous development cycle that Balan Wonderworld had to endure, that doesn’t really soften the blow that fans received when they booted up the game for the first time. Balan Wonderworld had some interesting concepts going for it, but they were surrounded by a poor technical framework and half-baked mechanics that made playing through the game an exercise in pain.

eFootball 2022

Konami’s attempt at rebranding its Pro Evolution Soccer series has started off on a pretty bad note with eFootball 2022. This free-to-play soccer sim is plagued with game-breaking bugs at launch, and while post-launch patches have alleviated some of those issues – other prominent criticisms such as the lack of varied game modes and general polish within gameplay mechanics haunt the game’s fates to this date.

LEGO Brawls

LEGO Brawls fared as a mostly fine fighting game when it was released on mobile platforms as a part of a subscription service, but in a console landscape where there are so many better options available – some even free to play – it ends up being one of the worst ones of the bunch. LEGO Brawls has a super thin gameplay loop that goes along with an uninteresting progression system and little variety in game modes that makes it suitable only for infants and younger audiences.

MX vs ATV Legends

THQ Nordic’s MX vs ATV Legends could have had a strong run if it had spent some more time in the making, but as it stands now – it’s a game that has some neat ideas at its epicenter, but they get muddled up in a buffet of technical and game design problems that make the whole ordeal a lot more frustrating than it needs to be.

Werewolf – The Apocalypse Earthblood

Developer Cyanide’s latest Werewolf – The Apocalypse Earthblood is a game that should by all means have been a smash hit. Hell, it’s a game where you can turn into a werewolf and wreak havoc upon your adversaries with your bare hands. But in practice, Werewolf – The Apocalypse is plagued with an overwhelming amount of game design problems ranging from poor combat design to sloppy narrative and dull visuals makes this adventure a pure disappointment on so many levels.

Zorro The Chronicles

It’s not everyday that we get linear adventure games that mix stealth and action elements together, so when Zorro The Chronicles was released – it certainly piqued the interest of many fans. But that feeling of ecstasy was rather short-lived, as Zorro The Chronicles constantly bombards the player with one frustration after another. And even as a game meant for younger audiences, Zorro The Chronicles fails on more fronts than it succeeds.

Dragon Ball The Breakers

At first, Dragon Ball The Breakers seemed like a fun concept with its asymmetric multiplayer gameplay putting a fresh twist on the standard video game adaptation of this classic anime. But when the game was released, fans realized how shallow the game actually is. Dragon Ball: The Breakers is riddled with prominent issues ranging from a finicky camera system, ill-designed gameplay mechanics, and plenty of microtransactions to go along with it.

The Last Oricru

Soulslike games are dime a dozen these days, and while some are excellent takes on this newfound genre – others are anything but. As you might have already guessed, The Last Oricru finds itself in the latter category, mostly thanks to uninteresting writing and a wonky combat system. Story choices in The Last Oricru do hold interesting ramifications for the plot, but that doesn’t really amount to much in the face of other prominent problems with the moment-to-moment experience.

Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance

A co-op action RPG set against the backdrop of one of the most recognizable tabletop games of all time should be a surefire hit, right? Well, countless fans thought so – but Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance laid waste on those expectations with a bland product that’s rife with issues both technical and otherwise. The visuals are impressive to some degree, but taken as a whole – it’s a disappointing product that doesn’t stand up to the sheer potential of its source material.

Matchpoint Tennis Championship

Torus Games’ Matchpoint Tennis Championships might not be the worst game on the list, but it’s not a game that’s going to hold your attention for more than a couple of hours at best. The actual gameplay mechanics are fine if simplistic enough for the most part, but everything surrounding that is underwhelming – and that includes a barebones career mode with little personality and bland visual presentation among other issues.

Tennis World Tour 2

While Tennis World Tour 2 is a game that delves into the more technical aspects of the sport, Big Ant Studios’ latest finds itself on the receiving end of most of the criticisms that were addressed with Matchpoint Tennis Championships a while before. Tennis World Tour 2 could have been something great, but for that to happen – it really needed some more time in the oven.

That's according to an updated release schedule until FY 2025 that Take-Two recently shared as a part of its quarterly earnings report.

Grove Street Games and Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition may have had a disastrous launch on consoles and PC, but the games are yet to launch on mobile devices. Rockstar and Take-Two had suggested a release for the first half of 2022, although it seems that things have been internally delayed.

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, recently held its quarterly earnings call, during which it shared its release schedule outlining details on upcoming releases for the period of FY 2023 to FY 2025. In it, it’s been stated that GTA Trilogy‘s mobile releases are planned for FY 2023- so the games will now be launching sometime between now and March 31, 2023.

That said, if the games do launch on mobile platforms by June 2022, the GTA Trilogy will have hit its supposed release date of H1 2022. But with no marketing suggesting the same and this recent release schedule, this prospect is looking highly unlikely.

On the sales front, the GTA Trilogy has “exceeded expectations” with more than 10 million units sold as of February 2022- read more on that through here.

The sequel is officially in "active development" but can the studio really surpass its previous works? Does it even matter to fans?

Last week, Rockstar Games finally confirmed what so many fans have wondered for the better part of the last decade – is Grand Theft Auto 6 in development? The answer, as you may already know, is yes. The developer noted that “active development” for the “next entry in the series” was underway and its goal with every new project was to always “significantly move beyond what we’ve previously delivered.”

As for when fans could expect to play it, nothing was said other than, “We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details” yada yada. Now, obviously there was excitement and more than a little celebration. Grand Theft Auto 5 had released in September 2013 and despite still being one of the very best games ever made with over 160 million copies shipped, is still being re-released with every new generation of consoles. The time for something new is now.

Even if Red Dead Redemption 2 is only a few years old and yet to be updated for current-gen consoles, there’s something special about a brand-new GTA. The over-the-top violence, sheer scale of the sandbox, mind-numbing attention-to-detail have always been a hallmark of the series (among many other things). It’s an altogether different vibe compared to Red Dead Redemption and if Rockstar has always gone above and beyond with its titles, then you can imagine the hype for Grand Theft Auto 6.

However, there is also a bit of trepidation. You could blame it on the sheer number of over-hyped releases over the years, from Cyberpunk 2077 and Battlefield 2042 to Anthem. It’s just natural to be wary of yet another big release that could fall short of expectations. Rockstar Games is no stranger to this either – though it wasn’t actually the team behind Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, the collection still bore their name as publisher.

The launch was plagued with typos, performance issues, bizarre changes, and much more, resulting in backlash that prompted an official apology. Numerous fixes and patches have improved it but it’s still nowhere near deserving the “Definitive Edition” label and continues to face criticism for its overall handling.

The near-universal acclaim that Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 received also doesn’t help. These games aren’t perfect – nothing is perfect, after all – but for many, they’re awfully close. Can Grand Theft Auto 6 reach that level? After all, Rockstar isn’t just competing with the very best that the industry has offered over the years, be it Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

It’s also competing with itself, to set a new standard for the genre and the industry. I personally don’t feel it needs to but the developer’s own statement seemingly indicates that this is a given, and not just a personal choice.

Initially, journalist Jason Schreier reported in April 2020 that the sequel would be a “moderately-sized” game compared to GTA 5 and RDR 2. This would still make for a large game by Rockstar’s standards but the plan was to continue expanding on it with post-launch updates. With how much support Grand Theft Auto Online had received compared to the base story in GTA 5, this was seen as somewhat of a good thing (and could possibly alleviate the crunch that the company has been known for).

Insider Tom Henderson would then report in June 2021 that the sequel would be set in modern day Vice City and feature multiple playable characters, including a woman. He also said that the world map would grow and change over time, much like how Fortnite works. However, it would be a long wait until release, perhaps even 2025.

Following co-founder Dan Houser’s exit from the company in 2020, development had apparently been restarted. But even up until that point, several narrative and gameplay elements had been undergoing changes since 2019. The entire process has been described as one of Rockstar’s most turbulent development cycles, which is saying something considering its history. Throw in everything else that’s happened in the world ever since and it’s no wonder that an official announcement has been a long time coming.

Assuming it does release after the next three years, Grand Theft Auto 6 still has a ways to go before then. The question nonetheless stands – can it live up to the hype? Given everything we’ve seen of Rockstar Games over the past decade, the current status of the industry and the rumored state of development, it may seem unlikely. However, it’s also important to acknowledge that everyone’s definition of hype is going to be an altogether different thing.

We live in an age where the sheer amount of marketing and hype, even in the absence of concrete information, can drive sales and turn something into a massive success. Look at Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition – it managed to sell over 10 million copies since release despite its multitude of problems and negative reviews. The amount of gameplay footage, details and screenshots that actually showcased the game was very limited, all the way up to release, but that still didn’t affect the hype surrounding it.

Much of this can be attributed to how beloved these titles were but the GTA name also holds plenty of sway. That’s one of the many reasons why Grand Theft Auto 5 still continues to sell and GTA Online is still a huge revenue generator.

You could also look at any number of super-hyped games in the past several years. Cyberpunk 2077, despite reports of crunch and troubled development at CD Projekt RED, still sold 13 million copies in less than two weeks (refunds barely made a dent in that figure). Battlefield 2042, despite an alarming beta and reports of troubled development, still had a number of fans pre-ordering and lining up to play. Dying Light 2 Stay Human, despite delays and reports of troubled development, still had three million players in its first weekend.

Halo Infinite has had over 20 million players so far despite ongoing criticism of its live-service model and reports leading up to release of mismanagement. Long story short, never underestimate the power of hype, especially in this age where the desire to experience any game that’s currently “trending” can be more paramount than simply enjoying a game.

If you’re asking me whether Grand Theft Auto 6 will live up to the same level of quality as its predecessors, then the answer is “We’ll see.” The state of development, its setting and overall narrative along with the characterization, how Rockstar is approaching sandbox design and other gameplay factors, how well it’s optimized and much, much more all play a factor in determining that. There’s simply not enough information to go off of right now (we haven’t even seen what it looks like). But if you’re asking me whether it will live up to the hype, then the answer becomes that much more complicated due to the nature of the beast.

Are you looking forward to the game because everyone else is? Do you want to play it simply because it’s Grand Theft Auto, even if everything that you loved about the previous games is stripped away or replaced with something else? Is it simply a means to justify upgrading your PC or purchasing a PS5 or Xbox Series X (or whatever Pro version of either happens to be around at the time) to experience it?

Do you actually care about the narrative of the base game or simply want to hop into whatever online experience is on offer? Are you simply waiting to see how everyone else reacts and, if applicable, watch the world burn? Is this something you’re picking up to enjoy for what it is and then moving on once you’re bored or something much deeper?

All of that depends as much on what Grand Theft Auto 6 is as much as what it isn’t. Regardless, whether you love it or hate it, the cycle of hype will remain. It’s ultimately up to us to discern the information as it comes, sort out our own priorities and play.

Despite its troubled launch and negative critical reception, GTA: Trilogy - The Definitive Edition sales have "significantly exceeded expectations."

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto games have been critical and commercial darlings for years at this point, and it’s rather common to see these games sell ridiculously well with numbers that most franchises wouldn’t even dream of crossing at their very best. To that effect, Rockstar’s Parent company Take-Two Interactive has now provided updated lifetime sales figures for a couple of GTA releases in its latest quarterly earnings presentation.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has sold well above anyone’s expectations with a grand total of 10 million units shipped, despite all of its overwhelmingly negative critical reception and troubled launch. Take-Two says the game “significantly exceeded expectations” where sales are concerned, in line with previous recent comments.

Meanwhile, the perennial seller Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 160 million units (which is a bump of 5 million units since its sales at the end of the previous quarter), and with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions slated for release next month, sales are sure to get a substantial boost once again.

Finally, the entire franchise lifetime sales stand at the 370 million+ units mark, just a bit shy of Nintendo’s Pokemon franchise (which stands at 380 million units sold).

Rockstar has officially confirmed that the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise is in active development- read more on that through here.
