Rockstar and Grove Street Games’ recently-launched Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has released to mostly mediocre critical reception and the game currently stands at surprisingly low Metacritic ratings, with an aggregate score (at the time of writing) of 56 on Xbox Series X/S, 63 on PS5, and 40 on Switch. However, users seem to disagree with the opinion of critics and are exhibiting a much greater dislike of the game, as the collective user rating for the game across all platform is a little less than 0.6 out of 10 right now (0.5 on Xbox Series X/S, 0.8 on PS5, 0.4 on Xbox One, 0.7 on PS4, 0.6 on Switch, and 0.5 on PC).

Though that might seem excessive at first glance, the backlash doesn’t come as a surprise. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has suffered a rough launch. A dysfunctional PC version, graphical glitches, framerate inconsistencies, and more on top of what was already an inconsistent and mediocre remaster has ultimately caused huge fan backlash. Of course, how Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive marketed the trilogy, as well as its $60 price tag, are also big factors as to why the games have been received as such, not to mention the fact that the launch of the remasters has gone hand-in-hand with the removal of all mods for the three games, as well as the removal of the original releases from sale on all digital platforms.

Grove Street Games seems to be enjoying the scrutiny (or so the developer says), and the developer has promised that fixes will be coming soon. Whether any updates will fix the game’s current reception in the future remains to be seen.
