It's traditionally worked with third-party developers to make games based on the LEGO theme, like the recent LEGO Horizon Adventures.

LEGO is seemingly making bigger investments in its video game business. In an interview with the Financial Times, LEGO executive Niels Christiansen revealed that the company is starting in-house development.

“We can say, as long as we’re under the Lego brand, we can cover experiences for kids of all ages, digital or physical. [Games development in-house] is something we’re building up,” said Christiansen.

LEGO has previously worked with game development studios like Traveller’s Tales, Guerrilla Games, and Epic Games. The most recent release under the LEGO banner was LEGO Horizon Adventures, which was released back in November 2024.

The company also has a long-term partnership with Epic Games through LEGO Fortnite.

Rather than focusing on competitive multiplayer, however, it offers LEGO Fortnite Odyssey and Brick Life. The former is a PvE game that involves up to seven players scavenging areas for materials to create bases and craft equipment, while the latter is a social life title.

It has also worked with 2K for racing game LEGO 2K Drive. A football game, dubbed LEGO 2K Goooal! is also seemingly under development.

LEGO Horizon Adventures recently celebrated its critical reception with the release of an accolades trailer. The title is essentially a LEGO-themed retelling of Horizon Zero Dawn featuring a more cheerful and whimsical open world starring Aloy and her friends. It also features the iconic robotic beasts from the Horizon franchise, albeit completely LEGO-fied. Check out our review for more details.

With this move, it is unknown if these collaborations will continue in the future. Stay tuned for updates.

Warner Bros.' South African Instagram recently uploaded a teaser image for a LEGO Harry Potter game that's set to be announced on August 25.

TT Games’ monopoly with licensed LEGO games seems to have been broken with 2K now having entered the ring as well, but it seems the developer still has things in the pipeline. A new LEGO Harry Potter game is seemingly in development, and will be announced later this month.

As reported by VGC, Warner Bros.’ official South African Instagram page recently uploaded a promotional teaser image for a LEGO Harry Potter game. The image was taken down promptly afterwards, but mentioned the date August 25 very prominently, suggesting that’s when the game will be officially announced.

VGC states in its report that “a person with knowledge of the project” has confirmd that it is indeed in development, and will allegedly condense the entire Harry Potter series into a single experience, similar to what 2021’s LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga did. Whether or not the aforementioned teaser image was legitimate is unclear, but if it was,the date it mentioned might suggest that it will be announced at Gamescom, which will kick off on August 22 and run until August 27.

Reports have previously also suggested that TT Games is working on a new LEGO Batman game. Read more on that through here.

Reports have claimed that the title will be an open world racing game developed by NBA studio Visual Concepts.

A little over a year ago, reports claimed that LEGO has signed a multi-game partnership with 2K that would see the company developing several AAA sports titles based on the LEGO license, and more recently, leaks purported that the first of those games would be LEGO 2K Drive, a racing title developed by Visual Concepts of NBA and WWE fame. Now, it seems like that title’s official announcement is right around the corner.

That’s as per a teaser uploaded by the official LEGO Twitter page, which confirms that the LEGO and 2K racing title will be formally unveiled later this week, on March 23. Little to nothing is shown from the game itself, while its title – which is LEGO 2K Drive, as per aforementioned reports – isn’t mentioned either. Previous leaks have claimed that it will be an open world game, and is allegedly set to launch sometime this year.

Meanwhile, as per leaks, there are two more LEGO 2K games in the works, with one of them being a football/soccer title developed by Sumo Digital.

A new minifigure spotted on LEGO's certification page bears mention of LEGO Games, alongside a 2K logo, seemingly lending credence to previous reports.

For nearly two decades, LEGO’s presence in video games has been tied almost exclusively to WB Games and TT Games, but it’s looking increasingly likely that that won’t be the case for much longer. Earlier this year, a VGC report claimed that 2K had signed a multi-game partnership with LEGO that would encompass a number of different sports titles, and more evidence has now emerged to point to the same.

As spotted by 1414falconfan on Instagram (via VGC), a new LEGO minifigure has emerged on LEGO’s official certification website that shows a character wearing an FC Barcelona kit and a purple shark head mask. The package also bears mention of “LEGO Games”, alongside a 2K logo on the bottom right. The character shown on the package is allegedly named Finnius Dash.

A lot of that may very well align with the aforementioned report from earlier in the year, which claimed that 2K’s first game as part of this new partnership would be a LEGO football title developed by Sumo Digital (Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Team Sonic Racing). Allegedly, a LEGO open world racing game is also in development at WWE and NBA studio Visual Concepts.

Whether this would suggest that 2K and LEGO are gearing up to make an announcement in the near future, especially with The Game Awards coming up later this week, remains to be seen. Stay tuned for more updates.

A LEGO football game is allegedly in development at Sumo Digital, in addition to an open world racer being made by Visual Concepts.

WB Games studio TT Games has been in charge of licensed LEGO games for nearly two decades at this point, and from licensed properties like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and Marvel to original games, the studio has put out a great number of games based on the license- and has done so exclusively.

That, however, will be changing soon- that’s according to a report published by VGC, which claims that 2K Games has signed into a partnership with LEGO that will see them developing “a range” of sports titles. As per the report, LEGO is choosing to end its exclusive agreement with WB Games, in part due to the decreasing sales of TT Games’ titles, while recent reports of poor working conditions at the studio have also “disappointed” key figures at LEGO. The company also wants to expand its presence in the video games space with a broader range of titles, while 2K is keen on expanding its presence in the sports genre.

The report goes on to say that TT Games has one more LEGO game in development beyond the upcoming LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, though whether or not it will continue to work with the license beyond that is currently unknown.

As for 2K’s LEGO-licensed games, three of them are already in the works, the report claims. One is a football/soccer games that’s being made by Sumo Digital, the studio behind 2020’s Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Sumo Digital was acquired by Tencent for $1.27 billion in July last year, and is currently also aiding with the development of the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy.

An open world racing game based on the LEGO license is also allegedly in development, with Visual Concepts – the studio in charge of the NBA 2K and WWE 2K franchises – leading the charge on that project. According to VGC, this is the project that has been mentioned in recent job listings as a major AAA open world racer based on a major license.

Sumo Digital’s football game is supposedly due out later this year, to coincide with the FIFA World Cup in December, with Visual Concepts’ racing title scheduled for 2023. According to VGC’s report, a third LEGO sports game is also in the works at 2K, and is apparently based on “a major sports franchise”. Interestingly, these sports titles could also feature guest characters from crossover licenses like Harry Potter, Marvel, and DC.

WB Games says that contrary to recent reports, the studios behind the likes of Mortal Kombat and the LEGO games are not going to be sold off.

There’s been a lot of question marks surrounding the future of WB Games as a whole of late. With the Warner Media Discovery Group merger looming large, there’s been a lot of speculation about whether or not game development studios owned by WB Games are going to be sold off to potential suitors in the industry.

A recent rumour originating from Windows Central’s Jez Corden (during the Xbox Two podcast) claimed that WB Games was, according to some documents seen by Corden, considering selling off NetherRealm Studios – developer of the Injustice and Mortal Kombat games – and TT Games – who have worked on LEGO titles almost exclusively.

However, WB Games says that that isn’t the case. In a statement provided to TheGamer, Remi Sklar – senior vice president of global communications at WB Games – stated that both the aforementioned studios would continue to be owned by Warner and were part of the Discovery merger.

“I can confirm NetherRealm Studios and TT Games will continue to remain a part of Warner Bros. Games, and all are included in the Warner Media Discovery merger,” she said.

Recently, NetherRealm Studios confirmed that it was ending support for Mortal Kombat 11, and instead completely shifting focus to its next game.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment recently stated, following the sale of mobile developer Playdemic to EA, that all WB Games studios would focus on making games based on WB-owned IPs going forward. Read more on that through here.

Nintendo has, in the past, been very closed off for licensing their IPs. But things are changing, and now the multimedia giant has become far more open to the idea of such collaborations. Earlier it was announced they had licensed their iconic Mario for a very unique LEGO set (you can read all about that through here), and more is apparently on the way.

In an interview with Brothers Brick, the designer of the Mario set broke down a lot of the behind the scenes workings. First he said the set had actually been worked on for four years. He also said that they are looking at other Nintendo IPs to potentially do something similar, though stopped short of saying which one is priority.

“I can’t go into any specifics here, but I can say that we haven’t worked for four years to release just one wave of products.

“We hope to have a long and fruitful relationship with Nintendo and their IPs, and we are really looking forward to working with them on a longer-term. They have a lot of very exciting IPs that we might do or might not do.”

The LEGO Mario set is a unique one both in how it looks as well as the added functionality it brings. It’ll be interesting to see what properties will get the green light next and what kind of similar treatment it’ll receive.

You can never quite be sure why Nintendo do what they do. Why did they make those weird CDi Zelda games? Why do the people in ARMS have springs instead of regular arms? Why is Mario’s full name Mario Mario? Why aren’t they hosting a general Direct even though we’ve been thirsty for information about their 2020 lineup for months now? Well, add another one to the pile.

Over on Twitter, the official accounts of both Nintendo and LEGO recently shared an interesting tease for LEGO Super Mario. What is LEGO Super Mario? Your guess is as good as hours. The clip attached to the teaser shows a screen of sorts with the series’ trademark question block flashing across it, while both Nintendo and LEGO also ask that you “stay tuned”. Given the tease, one would assume that more details aren’t too far away- but again, you never know with Nintendo.

The Japanese company did recently say that it wants to keep collaborating with third party companies to expand its IPs, and this seems to fall in line with that. What exactly this will end up being remains to be seen, but stay tuned, and we’ll keep you updated on any new info that comes our way.

You'll go from button masher to button ninja!

The developers behind The LEGO NINJAGO Movie Video Game, TT Games, are definitely up to something worth taking note of. TT Game’s latest LEGO game ups the conventional way we’ve been playing third-person action/adventure LEGO games with more ingenuity and more skill-based gameplay than ever before. It’s not an entirely original experience overall — most of it still borrows from similar LEGO titles — though TT Games have taken steps to make it feel like NINJAGO may be the first step in a broader, new direction. The LEGO NINJAGO Movie Video Game, as stated by its title, is based off of the movie which makes it an even bigger surprise that the game is actually semi-enjoyable; but it still hasn’t evolved enough to take that leap into unknown territory.

NINJAGO is centered around Lloyd, a young guy honing his ninja skills to be a great fighter. Lloyd leads an army of Ninjago soldiers to defend their home from the evil Garmadon. And as many stories go, Garmadon is Lloyd’s inattentive father which causes the setup of the entire game to not hold a single moment of hilarity back from the player. That’s about as far as the story expands for that. But no one really gets a LEGO game for it’s story. We often find subtle and absurd charm, wit and humor in this collection of varied games. And NINJAGO is no exception in those regards.

"Since this is a third-person action/adventure title like many other LEGO games, I wasn’t too sure I’d enjoy the mechanics of fighting within this game. I was wrong."

There’s always that odd, almost-Pixar-level of humor and wit within many modern LEGO games, and NINJAGO proves it’s up there. You’ll hear clever and quick quips that just make you giggle, or sometimes you’ll even be rewarded with belly laughing moments that are downright funny. NINJAGO centers its humor around personal bonds and relationships that are centered around the overarching story. You’ll have moments within each area — which are greatly varied — where you get a sense of character developent. NINJAGO is a game designed with family in mind, but the humor and experience with each character throughout have every age covered.

Since this is a third-person action/adventure title like many other LEGO games, I wasn’t too sure I’d enjoy the mechanics of fighting within this game. I was wrong. NINJAGO actually has a skill based fighting system, rather than just mashing a button here or there to win. Let’s face it, LEGO games tend to be an easy food to digest. You run, jump, build. Though this game is very similar in those regards, you’ll also quickly learn of fun combination moves that link up for major damage.

With the training and practice mode you’ll be an expert fighter in no time with lots of rewards for completing move sets. Where other LEGO games were practically button mashers, NINJAGO has a fluid series of key button presses for on-ground and in-air fighting. Tapping two signature button in a row results in damage that’s far greater than mashing the same button down over and over. You’ll also come across some really cool abilities. The ability tree is standard fair, but this time it’s more intricate and more interactive than previous LEGO games. And with finishing moves, you’ll finally get to scramble that block-shaped enemy into the ground and finish him off with a really cool move, as well.

Similar to other LEGO games is the way you’ll go around each area. Just like in other games like NINJAGO you’ll walk over to a pre-selected location where there’re missing pieces to a puzzle or an item that needs repair. These locations are the same button tap-and-hold segments that you’ve done numerous times before in other LEGO games, so you won’t find anything new here. There are a good number of similar things to do such as finding hidden collectibles, special bricks, and earning tons of money.

One of the bigger problems I have with LEGO titles is the fact that level layouts are very simplistic, and always way too busy for my eyes to follow. NINJAGO tones down the activities upon the screen from time to time, but you’ll still feel as though this is a game from the same mold. There are several different and varied worlds to travel across. You’ll experience all of the cliches of standard LEGO games: plant areas, cities, etc. It doesn’t change much there at all. There are moments when there’s so much going on all at once that you’ll often overlook certain aspects and areas that you need to advance. Luckily for the extra bonus missions within the game, the level opens up a lot more to where it doesn’t all feel jam packed in a small environment.

"With a revamped combat system and some genuinely funny moments, you might find yourself enjoying this game more than previous LEGO titles out there."

But with so much interaction and cosmetics constantly shuffling around the level, it sometimes feels overstuffed. Overstuffed adventures is what TT Games likes to do, however, and they do it well. They prove they have a lot to show even after the game ends. Once NINJAGO has wrapped up, you’ll have the ability to play many other modes. There are races that test your speed abilities, extra side quests that involve many other characters that can be gained after the game, and Master Builds mode. The LEGO NINJAGO Movie Video Game is equipped with a very frantic, very fast-paced, and very fun versus mode for 1v1 experiences. .

The music within The LEGO NINJAGO Movie Video Game is standard for similar titles, even outside of the LEGO universe. You won’t find many catchy tunes that really tug at your ears causing you to whistle along. But at least you won’t find anything that’s super repetitive or annoying, as some of these movie games tend to be.

Voice-overs had great moments of genuine enthusiasm that really felt LEGO-y. Each character got his and her moment and represented their characters as best as they could. And you can really feel the excitement between the cast and their excellent dynamic forged by a family-focused story.

Overall, The LEGO NINJAGO Movie Video Game is a game worth picking if you’re a fan of LEGO games. With a revamped combat system and some genuinely funny moments, you might find yourself enjoying this game more than previous LEGO titles out there.

Can LEGO Marvel's Avengers prove it is good at fun and exciting new game elements?

Lego and Traveller’s Tales are at it again. This time they’re taking on one of the biggest grossing movies in cinema history with LEGO Marvel’s Avengers. Unlike LEGO Marvel’s Superheroes, this game is taking actual events from the Avengers’ movie franchise and doing the best they can with what LEGO’s got. Unfortunately, these bricks just don’t stack up as well as past iteration of LEGO spinoff games. However, there is plenty of fun to takeaway from this semi-game-based-on-a-movie-based-on-a-comic game.

Let’s just clear something up right off the bat: if you haven’t seen at least most of Marvel films that lead up and into the Avengers, this game isn’t for you. It may not be noticeable to those who do not follow the chronology of the films, but the story, plots and scenes are so twisted up in this game it’s insane. But, there’s such little story to consider, that it might be acceptable for some. For the most part, I’m sure those interested in this game would probably be of a much younger age than most gamers looking for a legitimate game to spend some quality time enjoying.

Like most other LEGO games of this caliber, the same mini games, light puzzle solving, and button holding puzzles are stacked in Avengers as well. And still, for myself quite boring. Nothing new or interesting on this part. And like the other LEGO games, it’s quite repetitive to constantly have to switch between characters just to use certain abilities to get certain tasks done. It’s alright to change characters here and there, but this game makes use of character switching quite often. Especially when I found myself using a character I enjoyed, the game would often have me switch to the less fun one because that was the character with the abilities needed most often. But it’s hard to take credit away from the standard formula when the developers are pretty much dumbing down a standard game to LEGO proportions to begin with. All LEGO games are limited in that way.

What is enjoyably new are the combo moves that can be performed between characters whenever prompted, but your characters must be near the second on-screen character. These combo moves are cute, hilarious and devastating! Well, for a kid friendly LEGO game. These moves and how they involve a mini scene between the two on-screen characters are just a pile of fun.

"What is enjoyably new are the combo moves that can be performed between characters whenever prompted, but your characters must be near the second on-screen character."

Locations within the game are actually more than what most people would expect from a standard LEGO game. This is where they went all out on really trying to go for a great atmosphere that truly delivers. Special care was taken in spending time detailing these locations out. As the game starts in the same location as the opening of Marvel’s Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, the same opening cinematic also took place. It was beautifully set to feel authentic and looked identical to the film. Of course, in a LEGO-style world. From scenes that nearly mimic the look and feel of the movies to new sets that are LEGO-centric, there isn’t much that could have been done better in this sense.

Co-op is underutilized in Avengers this time around. It’s more of a sense of going for a movie-experience, per se. Certain boss battles can only be beaten by the character that defeats it in the movie. So if you’re playing two-player co-op the second character is often sitting on the sidelines doing nothing. This is an odd move for a game that relies heavily on humor and family – and by family I mean a family friendly game that should be enjoyed with the whole family in the living room.

What’s left after the simple, child-friendly gameplay is a good amount of treasure hunting, looting, discovering secret locations and tons and tons of secrets. There’s always that Stan Lee collectable to find and a great deal of exciting and new things to see that even the most passionate Marvel fan of either the film franchise or comic series’ will find intriguing.

For those looking to relive large aspects of the film, this game is sort of for them. It does have those big moments from time to time, but without a certain, cohesive order that totally bends the time table around, it may be bothersome to some. For those looking for a fun, family friendly LEGO game without the mess of having to pick up all the bricks when playtime is over, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is the perfect opportunity to enjoy some time relaxing with the family and getting some good laughs in with the kids.
