NBA 2K Dev is Working on an Open World AAA Racing Game “with a Major License”

New job listings suggest that NBA 2K and WWE 2K developer Visual Concepts is working on a new open world racer based on a "major license".

Visual Concepts is one of the leading developers where sports sims are concerned, having been in charge of the NBA 2K franchise for years, before taking the WWE 2K reigns from Yuke’s in 2019 as well. It seems, however, that the 2K Games-owned studio is looking to expand its horizons and head into unfamiliar waters.

As per a job listing posted by Visual Concepts for the position of a Producer at its studio in Foothill Ranch, California (spotted by VGC), the developer is working on an unannounced open world AAA racing game that will “target multiple platforms” and will apparently be based on “a major license”. Senior Build and Automation Engineer and Senior Technical Artist listings also mention the “exciting new open world driving game.”

Unsurprisingly, it seems the game will also feature multiplayer elements. A listing for Senior Software Engineer, Multiplayer mentions “ensuring the moment to moment networked multiplayer experience is the best it can be” and players having “a cohesive and seamless online experience.” The person in the role will also be responsible for ensuring that “all gameplay systems are architected for and working well in a multiplayer environment.”

Other potential details on the game can also be spotted in a separate listing for a Senior Software Engineer, which claims that the game “will be fun for all ages” and will be built on Unreal Engine- though it’s unclear whether that means Unreal Engine 4 or Unreal Engine 5. Meanwhile, there’s also mention of “unique physics and geometry processing”, all of which seems to suggest that it’s going to be quite an arcade-focused game.

The same listing also suggests that the game will launch on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, though specific platforms aren’t mentioned. How long it will be before we hear something concrete about the project from either Visual Concepts or 2K remains to be seen.
