The only PS5-exclusive title is This War of Mine: Final Cut. The above titles are a part of the Game Catalog for Extra and Premium subscribers. The latter gets access to three Star Ocean titles – Star Ocean First Departure R, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Star Ocean: The Last Hope – 4K and FHD Remaster – and Dragon’s Crown Pro, all on PS4.

Dark Souls Remastered

More than a decade after its original release, it’s still impressive how much Dark Souls has influenced gaming. Dark Souls Remastered is a fairly straightforward enhanced edition, providing a 60 FPS frame rate, higher resolutions, and improved lighting and alpha effects among other minor improvements. But the core of the title, from the excellent pacing and pitch-perfect design, the madness of levels like Sen’s Fortress and Blighttown, and the wonder upon finding Anor Londo remain to this day, as does the solid combat and boss design.

Gears 5

Compared to Gears of War 4, which simultaneously felt like a throwback and a new beginning, Gears 5 is a big step forward. The world is collapsing under the scourge of the Swarm and Cait must ultimately confront the COG’s secrets and overcome her past. This journey takes her from gorgeous snow-covered landscapes to the sandstorm-ridden Vasgar desert with new enemies, side objectives and more as the series’ signature cover-based gameplay still proves immensely entertaining.

Yoko Taro is working with Square Enix as the creative director on a brand new title, according to Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito. The news came during the first official NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… live stream (via Gematsu).

Specific details regarding the game were not announced, but the game will be a digital-only smaller title, though Square hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a special physical edition. Taro described the game as “off-beat” and “unusual,” saying it’s something he has “no idea how to explain or sell.” He wants people to play but has no idea how to make them do so.

Saito was more upbeat about the game, describing it as “nostalgic and new” and claiming that staff at the company believes it will sell well. Monthly updates on the status of the title were discussed as a possibility, and updates were promised when they became available, with the next few days listed as a possibility for the reveal of more information.

All of this sounds very interesting and more than a little weird… which makes sense for a Yoko Taro game. Taro has been responsible for some of the more interesting stories in games, so whatever this new project is, we hope it’s just as wild and unique as the rest of his work.

NieR: Replicant ver.1.22474487139 isn’t too far off now, releasing next week for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. For fans of the original, this is a long time coming especially after the success of NieR: Automata. While the remaster will offer improved visuals and combat, it will also include content that the development team couldn’t fit into the original.

Speaking to PCGamesN, producer Yosuke Saito said that, “There are some extra story sections that we were unable to put into the original. There is also a heartrendingly sad but unbelievably powerful new boss lying in wait for you somewhere. Please enjoy it all.” Interestingly, there will also be “something” involving a character from the original game and some connections to NieR: Automata.

“There are loads of extra bits in there. There’s a new story, an extra link to Automata, and something for fans of ‘Dad Nier’ too, so I think that people who played the original version ten years ago will be more than satisfied as well,” says Saito. ‘Dad Nier‘, of course, refers to the protagonist of NieR: Gestalt (the Western version of the game) who acted as Yonah’s father.

Saito also praises PlatinumGames’ Takahisa Taura for his work on the combat in the remaster. Taura helped in “looking over and adjusting all of the battle animations.” Saito added that, “I feel that the battles in Automata being so highly regarded was all down to Platinum Games’ contribution. That experience has undoubtedly been carried over into Replicant. It was a massive help having Mr. Taura and the Automata team overseeing and tweaking the system, too.”

NieR: Replicant ver.1.22474487139… releases on April 23rd worldwide. It went gold “a while back” and will seemingly feature DLC costumes based on characters from NieR: Automata. Stay tuned for more details on the title in the coming weeks.

Later this month, we will get a remaster of the original NieR with a goofy and long title, fitting of the quirky series. While it will be revisiting the first game, and has now officially gone gold, many were first introduced to the franchise via its sequel NeiR: Automata. It seems Square Enix is pretty aware of that, so they are giving a little bit of a cosmetic crossover for the new title.

A listing on the Xbox store has gone live, which you can see here, that sees some costumes for NeiR Replicant. It’s titled 4 YoRHa and includes several costumes for the game based on the sequel, specifically some very 2B-themed garbs. It’s listed as being free, though is not live as of now. While only up and live on the Xbox store as of now, there’s no reason to expect this won’t also come to the other versions.

The NieR franchise was taken to an incredible level with the second game in the series, NieR Automata, selling over 5 million copies, which is quite the feat for such a bizarre title. However, many probably didn’t even realize it was a franchise (or even a spinoff of another older franchise, but that is getting way into the weeds). There was a game before, one that is getting the remaster treatment later this year, and now you can see a direct comparison.

The original NieR released on the PS3 and 360, and will be remastered as NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 on newer systems. Earlier a new trailer for the game was released, which is very similar to the original’s opening. YouTube user adventkamen put it against the PS3 opening to give you an idea of what has changed. By and large, it looks pretty similar, but the remake has a brighter look and loses some of the hazy feel of the original in the process. Check it out below.

Toylogic has a new trailer for NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… available, showcasing a number of things from the remaster. It showcases more Emil, some large bosses and several cutscenes set to “Song of the Ancients”. Some of the cutscenes may appear familiar, like those for Kaine’s infamous Shadowlord speech. The combat will look pretty familiar to NieR: Automata players, though NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… employs parries and counters to effect as well. It’s an interesting hack and slash combat style which looks to be more responsive in the remaster. Don’t worry though – the bullet hell-style sequences still return in select boss fights.

This won’t be the end of NieR though – creator Yoko Taro has confirmed that two new projects are in development and one could be a true NieR sequel. The conclusion to the NieR: Automata collaboration in Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers will also come to a close when its next update hits in April.
