Asobo Studio's sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence, Drinkbox Studios' action RPG and a Flying Wild Hog's action adventure are free from January 2nd.

Sony has announced the free games coming to PlayStation Plus Essential in January 2024. Starting January 2nd till February 5th, Essential, Extra and Premium subscribers can claim A Plague Tale: Requiem on PS5 and Nobody Saves the World and Evil West on PS4 and PS5.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is a follow-up to Asobo Studio’s A Plague Tale: Innocence. It sees Amicia and Hugo ventureing to new locations to find a cure for the latter’s curse. Along with more involved stealth and combat mechanics, it also features gorgeous visuals and an incredible soundtrack. Check out our review here.

Nobody Saves the World is a top-down action RPG from Drinkbox Studios of Guacamelee fame. Players must battle the Calamity as Nobody, using transformation to assume different Forms. Each Form has a unique playstyle and passive skills, which you can mix and match as you progress. As for Evil West, it’s an action-adventure title set in the weird Wild West as you battle vampires with guns and a gauntlet.

Enter Magic Jimmy's Impossible Dungeon and unlock the new Dinosaur form. Players can also earn tickets to build statues for the forms.

Drinkbox Studios’ action RPG Nobody Saves the World celebrates its first anniversary, having released on January 18th 2022. In honor of the occasion, the developer has dropped a free new update – the Impossible Dungeon – adding an “endless” dungeon for players to scour and a new form.

Magic Jimmy’s Impossible Dungeon is found in Alchemist’s Gorge and challenges players to complete challenges across an endless number of floors. The clock is ticking, but if you perform well, the new Dinosaur form becomes unlocked. In addition to unique abilities and quests, it’s usable throughout the base game.

The dungeon also doles out tickets to build a massive statue of all the forms (which becomes more intricate overtime). The base game is currently 40 percent off on PC via Steam until January 25th, so it may be worth picking up.

Nobody Saves the World is available for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.

As the big releases hogged the headlines, several smaller releases found a niche audience with their gameplay and stories.

2022 has been a year of massive hype, big names, and more than a few delays. However, it also saw several worthwhile releases by independent developers and smaller studios. They may not have the biggest budget, but their gameplay is too fun to ignore. Here are 15 weird but very good games you probably didn’t play this year and should make time for in 2023.

Tiny Rogues

Launched in early access this year, Tiny Rogues is a dungeon crawler/rogue-lite/action RPG/bullet hell title with retro-style visuals. As minimalistic as the presentation feels, the combat is solid with several starting characters, tons of different weapons and spells, challenging and varied bosses, and great build variety. Want to become a tower shield-wielding magic wielder that rains down meteors? Perhaps a barbarian that inflicts poison arrows? You can do that and so much more.

Brotato

Of course, you can’t mention excellent early-access titles without mentioning Brotato. Essentially a rogue-lite horde shooter with timed waves, it offers some unique mechanics like the ability to hold and use multiple weapons at once. Combine this with some crazy upgrades, weapon rarities, and tons of different builds, from the super lucky guy to the streamer, and you’ve got hours and hours of fun on your hands.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero has been a long, long time coming, having been available in Japan till now. Sporting the same old-school RPG look as Trails in the Sky, the Western release remakes these visuals in extraordinary fashion while still delivering an excellent plot, stellar combat, and some excellent world-building. While those who played the Sky trilogy will get more out of it, Trails from Zero capably stands on its own.

The Case of the Golden Idol

If a more thorough detective title is to your liking, The Case of the Golden Idol is worth checking out. It takes place over four decades, with the player detective attempting to solve 12 grisly murders by filling in the blanks with a select set of keywords. There’s plenty of conspiracy and intrigue, and the bizarre art style is appealing in its own right. More importantly, the story and characters are simply excellent and well worth the trip.

Beacon Pines

I will forever sing the praises of Beacon Pines, Hiding Spot’s gorgeous mystery that’s equal parts choose your adventure and visual novel. It sports characters that are likeable and incredibly fleshed out; a cosy setting brimming with secrets; and a story full of twists, turns, and interesting developments. There’s so much to like, and it’s a shame that more people haven’t played it.

Citizen Sleeper

Citizen Sleeper is great, and you can’t say enough about its brilliance. Erlin’s Eye is a melting pot of characters, culture, and intrigue, whether you’re conversing with NeoVend, the sentient vending machine or trying to piece together the motives behind Sabine, the slum doctor. Actions play out through dice rolls, with light resource management, but it’s the extensive (and excellent) dialogue, coupled with the overall plot, makes this a must-play title.

Nobody Saves the World

Guacamelee developer Drinkbox is doing a lot with its overhead action RPG Nobody Saves the World. It sports fun combat with multiple classes, each offering unique abilities and upgrades – like the Rat, Ranger, Horse, and much more – and the ability to mix and match these into killer builds. It offers a large world to explore with procedurally generated dungeons and fun bosses. If that weren’t enough, it supports two-player co-op and has a solid comedic bent. If any of that sounds like something you’d enjoy, it’s worth a look.

Iron Lung

A short but sweet psychological horror set in a submarine navigating a strange Blood Ocean, Iron Lung has you traveling to locations and taking pictures. Seems simple enough, but you’re working with an iffy camera and relying purely on sensors and an incomplete map. Sometimes, you need to seal the submarine’s porthole because of depth pressure, but something is out there, waiting. Developed by David Szymanski of Dusk fame, Iron Lung is a claustrophobic and creepy experience.

Prodeus

A retro-Doom-style shooter with tons of gore and particle effects with stellar level design and action? That describes Prodeus in a nutshell, but the overall experience is so much more. Everything feels right, from the weapon feel and the overall pacing to the enemy design and difficulty. Plus, with a map creator and browser, hundreds of levels offer even more potential for slaying monsters.

Strange Horticulture

Being a horticulturist in a video game sounds like a drag, but Bad Viking’s Strange Horticulture is anything but. It’s equal parts plant management and mystery as you identify and recommend plants to customers in the small town of Undermere. As the story progresses, dark events and secrets come to light, and you’ll venture to mysterious places, converse with cults, and frequently pet the cat. It’s a stellar gameplay loop and one that keeps you coming back.

Sephonie

From the minds of Anodyne 1 and 2, Sephonie is more of a 3D platformer set on Sephonie Island with Amy, Riyou and Ing-wen as the protagonists. Upon navigating its various caves using wall runs and vaults, memories and dreams of the trio manifest while a strange force seems to manipulate them. In addition to a beautiful and unique aesthetic, Sephonie also offers puzzles using a grid system, as you Link different creatures in your research. It’s an unorthodox mix of genres that works well and delivers a great story.

Signalis

Touted as a classic survival horror, rose-engine’s Signalis tells the story of a Replika, Elster, who awakens in a wrecked ship and ventures onto a mysterious planet. What happened? That’s up to you to discover as you solve puzzles, manage your inventory and fight terrifying enemies. With gorgeous visuals and an aesthetic inspired by Stanley Kubrick and Hideaki Anno, Signalis is a surreal, terrifying experience worth playing.

Shredders

Have you ever craved the days of grounded but not super hardcore snowboarding titles? FoamPunch’s Shredders may fill that avoid. It offers numerous pro riders and a massive open world to explore, with locations ranging from parks to the countryside. The sheer depth of the controls, combined with the smooth animations and plethora of content, including a story mode and online play, make this a worthy successor to the Amped series.

Far: Changing Tides

Much like Far: Lone Sails, Far: Changing Tides is a side-scrolling adventure game where you manage a ship constantly on the move in a post-apocalyptic world. The twist is that you’re sailing through a flooded world and can occasionally leave the vessel to either gather resources or clear the way forward. Maintaining and upgrading the ship opens up underwater excursions to progress further. It’s a melancholic experience without any chance of failure and a sense of wonder.

APICO

Similar to Minecraft’s Forestry mod, APICO is about beekeeping. You venture to Port APICO, manage bees, cross-breed them for over 30 different species, make products and sell them, and much more. It’s a relaxing game with a hefty amount of content, from different biomes to minigames, and co-op support for up to four players. The latest update added butterflies, new flowers, and much more for even more stuff to do.

Two new forms, Killer Bee and Mechanic, are coming along with a new challenge-filled area, The Tempering, to all platforms for $4.99.

Drinkbox Studios’ form-shifting action RPG Nobody Saves the World is getting some new DLC. Out on September 13th, Frozen Hearth will add new forms, a new area and new challenges for $4.99. Check out the reveal trailer below.

The DLC adds two new forms – Killer Bee and Mechanic – each with unique abilities and play styles. To unlock them, you’ll need to venture to a new area called The Tempering, which offers different puzzles and tests of skill (like Mini Golf, apparently). Once the new forms are unlocked, they’re usable in the main game and DLC.

As for what inspired it, lead designer Ian Campbell said, “When we shipped the original game, there were so many ideas we had to leave on the cutting room floor, and this DLC gave us a chance to bring some of them to life. We had a blast creating even more forms, as well as puzzles and challenges that make the most of the game’s mix-and-match customization!”

Those who have yet to play the action RPG can pick up the base game and Frozen Hearth in a bundle for $27.99 on consoles. A Steam Bundle for the same, which includes the original soundtrack, will also be available. Stay tuned for more details on pricing for the same.

Nobody Saves the World is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PS5.

Guacamelee developer's latest action RPG comes to other platforms after originally launching on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

DrinkBox Studios’ shape-shift-to-win action RPG Nobody Saves the World is now available for PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch. It originally launched for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC, and sees Nobody aka you fighting to stop The Calamity.

It’s a lot to ask but fortunately with the power of magic, you can assume different forms and gain unique abilities by completing quests and leveling up. Things get even more interesting when abilities are mixed together. You can come up with interesting combinations like having the Rat’s lifesteal on consuming poisoned targets synergize with the Ranger’s poison arrows.

Nobody Saves the World offers procedural dungeons to explore and bosses to defeat but along with solo play, you can co-op with a friend. It’s also available to play on Xbox Game Pass. Stay tuned for more details on the title including any future updates and new content that may be added.

Nobody Saves the World – currently available on PC and Xbox consoles – is headed to PlayStation and Switch later this month.

Indie developed DrinkBox Studios won a place in our hearts long ago with its excellent Metroidvania duology of the Guacamelee! games, and earlier this year, cemented that place with a very different kind of experience. Nobody Saves the World delivered solid dungeon crawling action RPG offerings on Xbox consoles and PC earlier this year, and soon, it’ll be headed to other platforms as well, as indicated by recent developments.

DrinkBox Studios has announced that Nobody Saves the World is launching for PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch later this month, with a launch date set for April 14. Supporting both solo and co-op play, the top-down RPG tasks players with exploring an overworld and procedurally generated dungeons while mixing, matching, and experimenting with different Forms, each offering its own unique strengths and abilities.

Nobody Saves the World is currently available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One, and is also available via Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.

DrinkBox Studios' dungeon crawling action RPG launched for Xbox and PC earlier this year, and could soon be headed to PlayStation.

Given how many major new games have launched and enjoyed incredible success already this year, there are a few that have been drowned out by the noise to some extent. One of the most enjoyable experiences of the year so far, Nobody Saves the World – developed by Guacamelee! developer DrinkBox Studios – launched for Xbox and PC earlier in the year, and though it hasn’t been the biggest new release, it’s been received well by nearly everyone that’s played it. Soon, it could open the gates for more players to come in.

Twitter page @PlaystationSize – a page that routinely tracks updates and changes made to the PlayStation Store backend – recently spotted DrinkBox Studio’s dungeon crawling action RPG on the PlayStation Store, with a file size of 812 MB (without an update), which is more or less in the range of the game’s size on the platforms it’s currently available on.

Of course, no announcements have been made just yet, but there’s a solid chance that Nobody Saves the World’s timed exclusivity deal with Xbox will lapse soon, which means it will soon be able to release on other platforms as well. Though only the PS5 is mentioned, it’s likely that it will release for PS4 as well, seeing as it’s available on both Xbox generations right now- though whether it also arrives for the Switch remains to be seen.

Guacamelee developer also teases "even more" surprises for the action RPG "coming in the next few months that we can't wait to share."

Drinkbox Studios’ action RPG Nobody Saves the World is now available. Along with Xbox Series X/S, PC and Xbox One, it’s also available on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass (with support for cloud gaming). Check out the launch trailer below.

In development for about three years, the story sees protagonist Nobody embarking on a quest to save the world from the encroaching Calamity. To do this, they must assume different Forms, each having their own unique abilities. The Rat can poison and chomp enemies to restore health; the Horse can charge through; and the Ranger can attack from afar with a bow. Completing Quests and earning XP unlocks new abilities and Forms throughout one’s journey.

Abilities for different Forms can also be combined in crazy ways, which makes for some fun times in co-op. It also seems that more content could be coming post-launch – Drinkbox noted on Steam that, “We’ll have even more Nobody Saves the World surprises coming in the next few months that we can’t wait to share with you.” Stay tuned for more details and updates in the meantime.

DrinkBox Studios has confirmed that its action RPG Nobody Saves the World will release on January 18th. It will be available for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC along with Xbox Game Pass. Check out the latest trailer below which teases even more Forms.

Nobody Saves the World sees one playing as the titular Nobody as The Calamity threatens the world. Fortunately, they’ll have a variety of different Forms to help save the day, from a Rat and Horse to a Ranger and Knight, each with their own unique skills, passives and upgrades. Completing quests allows for upgrading skills, unlocking new Forms and eventually combining skills from different Forms.

Of course, there’s plenty more to look forward to like procedurally generated dungeons which ramp up in difficulty as one becomes stronger and a large overworld with various characters and secrets to discover. There’s also co-op support, allowing another player to join locally for even more chaos.
