It will be interesting to see how Hokuto Shinken’s techniques work against SNK’s heavy hitters, but Kenshiro is certainly welcome!

The cast of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is going to have its hands full this June, with Kenshiro making his way to South Town and bringing his trademark martial arts style from his anime appearances with him.

In case you aren’t familiar with this absolute powerhouse from the Fist of the North Star anime/manga, he’s quite handy with his fists, capable of some very nasty beatdowns via the use of some moves that target opponent pressure points to cause maximum damage. We expect that he’s going to be a melee character with some excellent mix-ups and high-damaging combos that can be hard to get out of as his knowledge of techniques long-forgotten brings some serious firepower to the arena.

It’s going to be quite interesting to see how Kenshiro measures up against other playable characters like Nightmare Geese and Blue Mary. Kenshiro’s addition to the roster as part of the game’s Season 2 DLC is certainly welcome, but it isn’t exactly what we’d call a surprise, considering that he’s been anticipated for a while now.

Nevertheless, he’s looking as stoic and awesome as ever in an interesting callback to that teaser from earlier this year. Check out the latest trailer below.

SNK's cult classic fighter has finally received a sequel with a new combat system, but is it worthy of the Garou legacy?

After Project Justice, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Soulcalibur and so on, Garou: Mark of the Wolves wasn’t just a palette cleanser – it was a paradigm shift. The 2D sprite-based characters and backgrounds looked absolutely stunning, but they belie a complex fighting system that went beyond simply learning combos or breaking out Special Moves. The T.O.P. Gauge introduced a new layer of strategy; Just Defend rewarded patience and playing mind games with your opponent; and, best of all, the cast felt balanced from top to bottom.

When it seemed like a sequel was impossible, SNK finally delivered with Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. It’s been a long time coming and in many ways, the cult classic’s formula may seem unrecognizable between the fully 3D visuals and the new REV system. However, there’s more than a semblance to hook hardcore fans, even if the overall package could use some work.

"On top of the already impressive 3D models, SNK added this subtle layer of shading, which feeds into the overall bombastic yet clean effects. All the classic fighters, be it Rock, Terry, Gato or Kain (who’s playable for the first time), also feel great to control."

Story-wise, City of the Wolves returns to South Town with a mysterious entity opening up the King of Fighters tournament. Everyone has their own plotlines, unfolding in the new Episodes of South Town mode. Terry Bogard is investigating rumors of Geese Howard’s ghost; Rock Howard, now under the tutelage of Kain R. Heinlein, his uncle, is fighting to save his mother; and so on. Like Street Fighter 6’s World Tour mode, you’ll explore multiple cities and battle opponents to level up, increasing your max health and damage in the process.

Progressing further will also unlock the T.O.P. Gauge, now known as the S.P.G. Gauge and various skills that can be equipped to improve your character, like health boosts, attack boosts, and whatnot. The streamlined nature of it all works well, and the AI more than puts up a fight (more on this in a bit), but the overall presentation leaves something to be desired. I’m not asking to be able to explore South Town in a third-person perspective – though it would have been nice – but something more than the unremarkable flat maps and dull dialogue boxes would have been nice.

Add a greater variety of opponents as well. At times, it felt like I was fighting the same three NPCs between the major storyline battles. At least the latter can be challenging, and some surprising fighters add to the hype.

The characters themselves also look phenomenal. On top of the already impressive 3D models, SNK added this subtle layer of shading, which feeds into the overall bombastic yet clean effects. All the classic fighters, be it Rock, Terry, Gato or Kain (who’s playable for the first time), also feel great to control. I especially enjoyed playing with Preecha, one of the newcomers, and the aggressiveness of her close-quarters Muay Thai (though the anti-air could use some work).

The environments are rife with details and well-animated, though I’m not too sure about the two-lines stages. Yes, it was a mode in Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers, but swapping between the foreground and background of a stage to fight feels odd. It’s not a core focus, thankfully serving as more of a side distraction than anything else.

"Unfortunately, issues with player input reading still seem to be present from the beta, resulting in some inputs either not executing or different moves occurring."

Aside from Episodes of South Town, there’s Arcade Mode and Missions for single-player. The former is your standard battling through eight opponents to reign supreme, punctuated with cutscenes featuring comic book-style panels. Unfortunately, a lot of the enthusiasm is dulled by how aggressive the input reading can feel by the AI. It feels like nearly every move is blocked and countered from the second they’re, especially from Stage 3 onwards. This is also present in EOST mode to some degree but it feels all the worse in Arcade Mode.

Of course, the biggest question is how the actual fighting feels. For some moves, it felt like coming home, with so many familiar moves carrying over and looking excellent in the process. But it’s not about Just Defend, Counters and the S.P.G. – the REV system adds another tactical layer to everything.

When S.P.G. is active, it can be used for REV Blows, shrugging aside incoming attacks to deliver hard-hitting blows (on top of providing access to the devastating Hidden Gear when you have two Super bar gauges). You can also chain together REV Arts – stronger versions of regular Special Moves – using REV Accel or negate chip damage from special moves with REV Guard (if you’re not confident in Just Defending it). The downside is that all these REV moves will cause the REV Gauge to overheat, allowing opponents to break through your guard until it cools down.

Just Defends and the new Hyper Defends further help with cooldowns and reinforce Garou’s strong defensive fundamentals. The fact that you can Guard Cancel out into other moves thus keeping up the attack, combined with the ability to brake special moves, adds layers of strategy, especially with how you position the S.P.G. Gauge. Choosing between a powerful start or an end-of-round comeback (or something in between) is a given. However, working out when to use your REV Arts and REV Accel, baiting your opponent and exploiting their tendencies, also makes for some compelling battles.

It’s a fairly high skill ceiling, but it’s fun to engage with, especially when everything clicks. Unfortunately, issues with player input reading still seem to be present from the beta, resulting in some inputs either not executing or different moves occurring. Though it’s not egregious, there are definitely circumstances where it pops up, and it feels incredibly awkward.

"The characters and fighting system make the experience, and though several fundamental issues must be ironed out, it offers a solid gameplay loop with plenty of depth, especially given how nuanced and distinct the roster is."

Though I couldn’t go as in-depth into online play as I would have liked, the few matches I had boasted solid netcode, even at 150 to 180 ms latency. Matchmaking also felt pretty quick, especially given the limited number of people playing before launch. However, as always, it’s best to wait until launch to see how things perform. The UI also leaves something to be desired, between the small text and iffy navigation.

Despite these rough edges and the rudimentary, though not spectacular, Story Mode, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is worth checking out, especially if you’re burned out on Street Fighter 6 and want to avoid anything to do with Tekken 8. The characters and fighting system make the experience, and though several fundamental issues must be ironed out, it offers a solid gameplay loop with plenty of depth, especially given how nuanced and distinct the roster is. It’s bittersweet in a sense – to see all these once-newcomers becoming established fighters in the series, yet still feeling so inherently familiar.

Some part of me pines for the good ol’ days of the sprite-based visuals and old-school vibe, but as it stands, City of the Wolves is a strong continuation of the franchise that will hopefully grow into its own with more support and polish.

The long-awaited sequel to Mark of the Wolves is out on April 24th for consoles and PC. Here's what you should know before diving in.

SNK’s next big fighting game, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, launches on April 24th for Xbox Series, PS5, PC, and PS4, with three days of early access available for pre-orders. There’s much to look forward to, but more than anything, it’s the sequel that Garou: Mark of the Wolves fans have been waiting decades for. Check out 15 things you should know before picking it up.

Roster

At launch, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves features 17 playable characters. A good chunk of the roster carries over from Garou: Mark of the Wolves, including B. Jenet, Gato, Hotaru, Rock, Terry, Tizoc, etc. However, some newcomers include Preecha, a Muay Thai fighter trained by Joe Higashi, and Vox Reaper, an assassin and apprentice to Grant. You also have Fatal Fury stalwarts like Mai Shiranui and Billy Kane, and even Kain R. Heinlein, previously a boss, is playable for the first time.

The Wildcards

While all this sounds just fine, SNK announced two more characters which can only be described as out of left field. These include footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who arrives in South Town and immediately sets about schooling opponents with kicks and energy balls, and DJ Salvatore Ganacci who, as you probably guessed, can use his voice as a weapon (and swim in mid-air). Imagine if they end up being the meta.

Stages

While you’re still fighting on a 2.5D plane, City of the Wolves features some returning classic stages. Freight Express is a homage to Terry’s stage from Fatal Fury 2 and Garou, though some new faces adorn the rock in the background, and Tizoc’s Universal Arena looks better than ever. You can also look forward to IP Space Center, Yuri’s Fitness Club (seemingly inspired by Yuri’s Art of Fighting 2 stage), and much more.

Training

Training Mode, as you would expect, lets you practice with various customizable settings. You can measure damage, impact frames, and more while fine-tuning your commands and combos. And of course, it’s possible to enable matchmaking in the background while you practice.

Just Defend and SPG

Just Defend and T.O.P, now known as S.P.G., return. As in Garou, the former is meant for correctly timed blocks (and there’s even Hyper Defense for combos). Both are beneficial for cooling down the REV Meter, slightly recovering health and potentially cancelling into an attack.

S.P.G. is a mechanic that activates at a certain point in your health bar, which you can set before a match. It lets you unleash REV Blows for massive damage and shrugging off incoming attacks. You also deal more damage, allowing for a strong starter or comeback if you’re on the ropes.

Ignition, Redline and Hidden Gears

Super moves, known as Gears, also return and depend on your Gear gauge. In Arcade Style, Ignition Gears are activated with one bar while Redline Gears require two (and deal more damage). If you really need to turn things around, there’s also the Hidden Gear. Available only during S.P.G., it spends both bars and executes a devastating attack.

REV System

The REV System is brand new to the franchise and SNK titles in general, dictated by a meter at the bottom of the screen. It allows for executing the previously mentioned REV Blows, REV Arts (which are stronger versions of Special Moves), REV Accel for chaining REV Arts and REV Guard which prevents chip damage and also gives a bit more breathing room.

However, if the meter is in the Overheat stage, your guard meter can be broken, causing temporary stun, and you won’t have access to any of the REV moves. It’s very much akin to Street Fighter 6’s Drive Gauge, but fits pretty well.

Episodes From South Town

Further adding to the Street Fighter 6 comparison is Episodes From South Town. Like World Tour, you’ll explore Central City (and Second South, based on the official trailer) and challenge various other fighters, gaining experience, levelling up and learning skills. The biggest difference is that you can play as a roster member rather than a custom fighter.

Arcade Style and Smart Style

The era of multiple control styles is here to stay and Fatal Fury is hopping on the train. It offers two control schemes – Arcade Style, which functions as your standard control scheme, and Smart Style, a more streamlined set-up for easily executing combos. The differences are interesting because Smart Style lacks a lot of the nuance of Arcade. You can’t brake or feint at all; Hidden Gear isn’t available; and Super Moves will consume the entire meter.

Cosmetic Customization and Jukebox

Expanding on cosmetic customization is the ability to color a character’s eyes, hair, clothing, shoes, and more separately. You can select different textures, adjust their sizes, add a specular effect, and more. Want Hotaru to have yellow tiger print paints? Go for it. The Jukebox is also available and seemingly includes all the songs from past Fatal Fury titles if you want to revisit the classics.

Online Modes

As for online modes available at launch, you can look forward to Casual Match, Room Match and Ranked Match. The latter allows for customizing connection speed and whether you want to enable cross-play while Room Match allows for customizing a room based on the number of members, region, privacy settings and more. The UI also helpfully outlines rank, win-loss record, and winning streaks.

Rollback Netcode and Cross-Play

Fans of Garou had to wait many years for features like rollback netcode and cross-platform play. City of the Wolves includes both, which means you can take on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC players at launch. Impressions for the netcode have been generally positive with the overall quality receiving praise after past betas, though there are a few matchmaking issues. Of course, how this will all perform at launch remains to be seen.

Full English Voice Acting

One of the biggest new features in City of the Wolves relates to the voice-acting. This will be the first Fatal Fury title with English voice-acting, and the first SNK title in years to receive the same. Even if the purists will stick to Japanese, it still says a lot about how seriously SNK is marketing this to the world.

Post-Launch Characters

We already know that Ken Masters and Chun-Li from Street Fighter are joining the roster, seemingly in exchange for Terry and Mai appearing in Street Fighter 6. But that’s not all. The first post-launch DLC character is actually Andy Bogard, who arrives first this Summer (with Ken out shortly after). Joe Higashi is next this Fall, followed by Chun-Li in the Winter. Wrapping up Season 1 is Mr. Big, who debuted in Art of Fighting as a boss. He’ll join the roster in early 2026.

PC Requirements

PC players need 60 GB of storage space to install the game, though an SSD isn’t mandated. Minimum requirements include an Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, 8 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) or AMD Radeon RX 580 (4GB). The recommended requirements include a Core i7 8700 or Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM, and an RTX 2070 or Radeon RX 5700 XT. Not too shabby, though the graphical quality and resolution that each provides are unknown.

Andy Bogard's disciple, now also under Mai Shiranui's tutelage, returns and remains as quick and dangerous as ever in a fight.

After announcing Cristiano Ronaldo and Salvatore Ganacci as fighters in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, SNK has unveiled the final launch roster member – Hokutomaru. Playable in Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Andy and Mai’s pupil makes his return. Check out some of his moves in the trailer below.

Hokutomaru has effectively moved from the mountains to South Town, and despite taking time to adjust, he’s keen on helping people. As a practitioner of Shiranui ninjutsu, he’s capable of dashing forward and striking enemies, throwing shurikens on the ground and in mid-air, and diving at opponents.

His Ignition and Redline Gears remain more or less the same, but his Hidden Gear mixes Mai’s techniques with his own. If you’re looking for a fast character with strong hit-and-run tactics, Hokutomaru could be it.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves launches on April 24th for Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC. Special Edition owners (which is everyone since no other edition is available) gain three days of early access on pre-purchasing.

Here's why I can't wait to play Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.

Following Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero and BLEACH: Rebirth of Souls, another iconic yet enduringly absent fighting series is making a hotly anticipated return. After two-and-a-half decades on the side-lines – with headline characters relegated to making cameo appearances in other fighting games – Fatal Fury is back with Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. A direct sequel to Garou: Mark of the Wolves, a game many consider amongst fighting games’ greatest, City of the Wolves revisits and revitalises mechanics from its predecessor whilst simultaneously stamping its own identity via eye-catching art styles and novel fighting systems.

There’s a lot going on under the hood, but newcomers – or, indeed, those somewhat rusty fighting game players – will be pleased the developer have taken a leaf out of Tekken 8’s book in that control systems exist to make acclimatising to the game’s break-neck, offense-centric brawling more approachable. In addition to the returning four-button arcade style control scheme, there is the option to play with the more basic, beginner friendly smart style control scheme which allows new players to immediately pull off awe-striking moves by eschewing difficult motion controls.

There is also a thorough tutorial mode to further help with player onboarding which, amongst giving chance to practice the game’s numerous techniques, provides explanations for why and when certain manoeuvres should be favoured over others. All in all, given the game’s complexity the developers are providing an inviting package; a relief of sorts that they’ve followed the recent trend amongst fighting games to cater to those who’re, shall we say, less skilled.

We’ll get into the meat of the Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves’ distinct fighting mechanics momentary, but first a word on that awesome, comic book style art. In short, if there was ever a fighting game to tempt an outsider into its world, it’s this. City of the Wolves balances cartoony, yet distinct, art and character design with fistfights which feel impactful. There’s a danger with this sort of aesthetic for fighting to feel lightweight, for style to dominate over substance, but with City of the Wolves deploying an over-exaggerated staccato effect to distinguish every blow, each kick, punch, block, and throw lands with force.

And this visual feedback is important as it helps players keep track of one of City of the Wolves’ novel features in its REV meter, a function most similar in design to Street Fighter 6’s drive gauge. A part of the REV system, which is City of the Wolves’ new fighting toolkit, the REV meter fills when players unleash a REV action. When the REV meter maxes out, REV actions become unavailable for a time. This ensures that these REV actions – ostensibly powered-up versions of special attacks and guards – cannot be spammed. Players will need to think strategically as to when they execute a REV action.

Comprising the REV toolkit are REV arts which are more powerful versions of special attacks such as throwing faster projectiles or unleashing stronger punches, REV accel which lets players combo REV arts into other REV arts, and REV guard which is a special kind of block which puts distance between you and your opponent, more so than a regular block, whilst negating chip damage from special moves. REV blows blend offensive and defensive manoeuvres into one unique motion, a hard-hitting strike which brushes off enemy attacks in tandem with dealing immense damage. REV blows can be achieved mid-air, plus can be combo’d after REV arts via REV accel.

REV blows might seem overpowered, but what needs pointing out is REV blows can only be executed when a fighter’s S.P.G. is active, that is their Selective Potential Gear, which is set during character selection to become active at the beginning, the middle, or the end of a fighter’s health gauge. So, thinking strategically again, players can enter fights guns blazing, or prefer S.P.G. to activate when their health is running low, the tactic being to use REV blows to turn the tide of battle and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. S.P.G. also boosts overall attack strength, so even when the REV meter is maxing out players still feel it’s benefit.

It’s interesting to see how S.P.G. and REV blows will play out as the game becomes more established amongst its player base. It could be rare that both players activate S.P.G. simultaneously, and in this instance REV blows can’t be countered with another REV blow, leading to a potential imbalance and over-simplification of the game’s complex mechanics.

The REV meter can be recovered via the following methods: waiting, walking, or dashing towards your foe, successfully landing an attack, or via a couple of techniques returning from Fatal Fury games of old: Just Defence and Hyper Defence. But before we explain what those defensive techniques are, it’s here, when REV meters are maxed, that another element of strategy comes into play albeit with a shade more risk versus reward. See, when REV meters are at their maximum capacity a fighter’s guard gauge has potential to deplete too. Displayed via a small meter below player health, the guard gauge will reduce with every blocked attack, and should this reach zero you’ll enter a guard crush state meaning it’ll take longer to recover from hits.

Just Defence tasks fighters with blocking their opponent’s strike at precisely the right moment – akin to Street Fighter’s parry mechanic, perhaps – with boons to health recovery, REV meter decrease, and the opportunity to perform a Guard Cancel the reward, the latter being an interruption to your own block status to perform a counter strike, with some counters such as Ignition Gear or Redline Gear (Gears, in City of the Wolves, are essentially a category of special move) executing more rapidly than if chosen any other time. Hyper Defence ups the ante in that players must execute a forward input with surgical precision during a multi-hit attack, although the rewards are the same as in Just Defence.

Further options to recover REV meter are possible though, and these are especially useful if your fingers aren’t nimble enough to execute Just or Hyper Defence. Feints are essentially special move false starts and are a viable option to keep some distance between you and your opponent whilst Braking cancels the start-up animation for special moves, creating opportunities to unleash combos or alternative specials; to flummox your opponent by clouding their input reading.

There are loads to get to grips with here, and we haven’t even mentioned the host of game modes available on release. Ranked, casual, and room matches – all with rollback netcode and crossplay – are available, plus character customising colour edit mode, jukebox mode if you fancy listening to tracks from Fatal Fury’s past entries, and the rather intriguing clone mode in which you can train against AI versions of yourself and past opponents.

The headline game mode however is one for single players to enjoy. Episodes of South Town is a single player RPG mode whereby you’ll square up against foes dotted across the titular town, with victory in a variety of rule-specific skirmishes yielding reward points to level up your character.

Surely a shoo-in for the most exciting fighting game releasing this year, from what we can see given results of the recent open beta the only drawback with Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is its lacklustre matchmaking. At the time of this features writing another open beta is scheduled to start imminently. Fingers crossed this helps the developers identify the root cause of the game’s matchmaking problems as, sort that out, and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves has potential to re-enter the pantheon of video games’ greatest fighting experiences.

Part of a previously announced collaboration, the legendary footballer arrives in South Town to polish his "new football skills."

Remember that collaboration with Cristiano Ronaldo that SNK announced for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves? Against many expectations, it’s resulted in the Al Nassr footballer appearing as a playable character. Check out some of his unsurprisingly football-focused moveset in the announcement trailer below.

Ronaldo’s fighting style combines Football and Martial Arts. He’s essentially in South Town to “hone his new football skills.” Whether he’ll play a more significant role in the story remains to be seen, but his Command List is available. One noteworthy skill is manipulating an energy ball, which he can launch at opponents from the ground and mid-air.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves launches on April 24th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PS4, and PC. Pre-orders get three days of early access, but everyone will receive Season Pass 1, which provides five additional DLC characters post-launch. These include Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, Mr. Big, and Street Fighter veterans Chun-Li and Ken Masters. Head here for their release windows.

SNK's cult classic is back with a sequel, introducing new mechanics, characters, and much more. Check out all the big differences.

Decades ago, the thought of SNK ever releasing a follow-up to Garou: Mark of the Wolves, considered by many as one of the hallmark fighting games, seemed like a dream. Well, dreams thankfully come true with Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves launching on April 24th for Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC. It’s a true-blue sequel in many ways, carrying over many of the same mechanics and characters while advancing the story.

However, a lot has also changed. Let’s review 15 of the biggest differences between Garou and City of the Wolves before the latter’s launch.

Story Changes

Believe it or not, South Town and its denizens have seen numerous changes ever since the Maximum Mayhem version of King of Fighters. Kain R. Heinlein discovers that his sister and Rock’s mother is still alive and must team up with his nephew to rescue her in yet another tournament. Everyone else crosses paths once more, but who’s the host this time? And what could they possibly have in store?

New and Returning Fighters

Launching with 14 playable characters, Garou: Mark of the Wolves was notable for featuring all-new fighters alongside Terry Bogard, the only veteran from Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves packs 17 playable characters and changes things up significantly. Billy Kane and Mai Shiranui arrive from other titles while almost everyone from Garou – Kim Dong-Hwan, Marco Rodrigues, Tizoc, Hotaru Futaba, and more – returns. Of course, you also have debuting fighters like Vox Reaper and Preecha.

Playable Boss

If that wasn’t enough, Kain, previously limited to appearances and serving as the true final boss of Garou, is finally playable in City of the Wolves. His overall demeanor remains a mystery, but his attacks and mastery of fire are as deadly (and sleek) as ever.

2D vs. 3D Graphics

Another massive shift for the series is in the graphical style. Garou: Mark of the Wolves uses 2D character sprites and backgrounds, both looking absolutely gorgeous to this day. Meanwhile, City of the Wolves’ art style is fully 3D for characters and backgrounds, with its style taking multiple cues from The King of Fighters 15. It does feel more bombastic, with some animated flourishes that maintain that signature Garou feel, though.

Episodes From South Town

Garou’s Story Mode essentially entails fighting opponents in linear order – defeating them with an AAA rank at minimum would eventually unlock Kain as the final boss and a special ending on his defeat. On the other hand, City of the Wolves offers Episodes from South Town, where you can wander around the map and challenge various fighters. Win battles and earn XP, new skills, and cosmetic options, making for a World Tour-like experience. Of course, the traditional Arcade Mode is still available for those who want that old-school experience.

Improved Cosmetic Customization

Garou: Mark of the Wolves didn’t offer alternate outfits – you could recolor a fighter’s base outfit from several set choices, but that’s it. Not only does City of the Wolves have different outfits for characters like Terry and Mai, but it also has much more extensive color customization. You can separately adjust the colors for different pieces of clothing, set patterns, adjust texture size, and much more. It’s a huge step up in all the right ways.

T.O.P. and S.P.G.

The T.O.P. System returns in City of the Wolves and functions like before. When your health is in a specific range, it activates and offers enhanced attacks, health regen up to that specific point, an additional special move, and more. Perhaps the biggest difference is that it’s now called the S.P.G. System and offers the ability to execute the new REV Blows.

REV Combat System

Speaking of REV, it’s essentially the new combat system in City of the Wolves. Stronger versions of special moves encompass REV Arts, while REV Accel is used to chain attacks. The aforementioned REV Blows can help create space, though REV Guard is also good for breathing room if timed correctly. Compare all this to Garou’s more streamlined system, and there’s a lot to learn.

Overheat and More Aggression

While Garou is a pretty balanced game in terms of attack and defense, City of the Wolves definitely leans into a more aggressive play style with the REV System. This is due to Overheat, which triggers when the REV Gauge is maxed out and prevents the usage of REV moves. While you can wait for it to gradually deplete, landing regular attacks on your opponent is the fastest way to make that happen. It’s comparable to Street Fighter 6’s Drive system, and I’m keen to see just how much it dictates a match’s overall pace.

Just Defense and Hyper Defense

Just Defend is a Garou player’s bread and butter when it comes to defense, providing a bit of health and a counterattack. This naturally returns in City of the Wolves, but on top of REV Guard, there’s also Hyper Defense that can be used against multiple hits, expanding your defense even further.

Smart Style Controls

Like Tekken 8’s Special Style and Street Fighter 6’s Modern Style, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves features Smart Style for newcomers. You can execute Smart Combos by pressing Circle on PlayStation and Combination Attacks with Square when up close. However, you’ll miss out on high-level features only available in Arcade Style, like feints. Garou never offered such a control scheme, only sticking to the traditional setup.

Cross-Platform Play

Considering it first launched in 1999 for arcades before making its way to home consoles from 2001 onwards, the very state of online play in fighting games would hinder Garou’s reach. Of course, it’s since been updated over the years, even receiving cross-platform play in subsequent updates. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, thankfully, offers cross-play out of the box, allowing PC and console players to go head to head from launch.

Launching With Rollback Netcode

As acclaimed as Garou remains among the FGC, it wouldn’t receive rollback netcode until January 2020, courtesy of Code Mystics, who also implemented the same for The King of Fighters ’97, KOF ’98 Ultimate Match, and KOF 2002 Unlimited Match. Thankfully, City of the Wolves players won’t have to wait long, as it’s available at launch.

Playable Street Fighter Characters

With Terry and Mai jumping over to Street Fighter as DLC characters in Street Fighter 6, it only makes sense that Capcom sends its best fighters to South Town. In a first for Fatal Fury as a whole, Ken and Chun-Li will be guest characters in City of the Wolves, with the former out this Summer and the latter launching in Winter.

Post-Launch Support

Garou receiving extensive post-launch support and new characters would have been the dream back in the day. Fortunately, SNK already has plans in motion for City of the Wolves. Its first Season Pass is included with the Special Edition, which retails for $59.99 and is the only edition available. You can also expect at least three years of post-launch support, meaning even more characters and new features alongside balance adjustments.
