“Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say,” he revealed to IGN in a recent interview. So it seems the time still isn’t right.

There have been plenty of rumors about it in previous months, though, with Game File’s Stephen Totilo reporting that Mad Head Games of Scars Above fame is working “under/with” Saber on the remake. Neither studio confirmed whether this was true, but the former’s website revealed it’s working on an “unannounced AAA game” based on a “famous and beloved IP that fans will eagerly anticipate.”

Since its announcement in 2021, that too as a PS5 console exclusive, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake has been seemingly cursed. Under development at Aspyr, it was allegedly delayed indefinitely, with Saber Interactive taking over. When the latter split from the Embracer Group, it retained ownership of the remake with CEO Matthew Karch claiming it was “alive and well.” Sadly, there have been no substantial new details (not including leaked concept art of Kashyyyk) or even gameplay.

On the bright side, Arcanaut Studios, led by Casey Hudson, is working on Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a spiritual successor that he assures will launch before 2030. Head here for more details.

But amid all this, there’s a rather interesting revelation about the developer allegedly working on Knights of the Old Republic – Remake. Totilo notes that it’s Mad Head Games, known for Scars Above, which is working “under/with” Saber Interactive. The latter has yet to officially confirm if this is the case.

A quick look at Mad Head’s website indicates an “unannounced AAA game” based on a “famous and beloved IP that fans will eagerly anticipate.” It’s also “by far the biggest project we have ever developed” and will “generate some serious hype.”

Obviously, that descriptor could apply to any number of potential projects. However, combined with Totilo’s report and the fact that it’s working with Saber Interactive on another project, this could very well be the remake.

Regardless, we may not have to wait long to find out. Insider Kurakasis recently reported that there would be a “big” Star Wars announcement soon, later alleging that its title ends with “The Old Republic.” Given the scale of the project and how beloved the IP is, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Knights of the Old Republic – Remake receive an update.

To clarify, it has nothing to do with Star Wars: Zero Company, the turn-based tactics game from Bit Reactor and EA or Quantic Dream’s long-in-development Star Wars: Eclipse. That leaves only two potential choices – Respawn Entertainment’s sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Saber Interactive’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake.

Electronic Arts has never officially revealed Star Wars Jedi 3, though it confirmed back in 2024 that the “final chapter” in the series is in the works. Jedi: Survivor and Fallen Order amassed more than 40 million players at the time and have doubtless only increased since.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is an even bigger enigma. Originally in development at Aspyr under the Embracer Group, it faced delays due to internal struggles. Saber took over and retained ownership of the title after splitting from the holding company. It’s set to receive new details “when the time is right,” but concept art of Kashyyyk and early level assets have leaked since.

As the home planet of the Wookies, which first canonically appeared in Star Wars: Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith, Kashyyyk possess dense forests. This allows for extensive treetop settlements, and in the remake, the housing structures would have been more ornate and elaborate. There’s also denser forestation, though how it would appear in-game remains completely unknown.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake was announced in September 2021 for PS5 as a console exclusive. It wouldn’t receive any further updates until reports emerged of development trouble at Aspyr, allegedly leading to Saber Interactive taking over the project.

With the latter splitting from the Embracer Group, it has been confirmed that the remake is “alive and well” but would receive new details “when the time is right.” As always, stay tuned for more updates.

With Space Marine 2‘s success, does that bring Saber Interactive closer to finishing the remake? CCO Tim Willits told IGN, “Right now, we are focused on development. We look forward to sharing more when the time is right.” There’s no ETA on when it can be expected, but at the very least, it’s progressing.

Star Wars: Knights of the Republic – Remake, based on BioWare’s acclaimed RPG of old, was originally under development at Aspyr Media. However, after studio leadership reacted negatively to a vertical slice (and promptly fired design director Brad Prince and art director Jason Minor), it was indefinitely delayed. The Embracer Group, which still owns Aspyr, had no comments on its progress.

After Saber Interactive split from the company, it assured players that the remake is “alive and well” and it’s committed to exceeding expectations. Stay tuned for more updates, however long they may take.

While Saber Interactive is going private, it will reportedly continue to develop Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake. It also apparently has an option to bring along other Embracer Group subsidiaries.

The role-playing game was announced with Aspyr as the developer in 2021, but subsequent reports revealed that Saber took over after development troubles. It was rumored to have been cancelled and still in development within days.

In a separate tweet, Schreier said that he “can’t promise it’ll actually come out” but that the remake is still in development. It’s unknown how all this works out with Disney, who owns the Star Wars IP, or PlayStation, which has exclusivity rights for the console version.

Saber Interactive’s reported departure comes in the wake of other major shifts in the industry, including layoffs at PlayStation Studios and Electronic Arts, the closure of SIE London Studio and Ridgeline Games, and the cancellation of projects like a live-service Twisted Metal and a first-person Star Wars shooter.

PlayStation also deleted its announcement tweet from September 2021, but you can check out a cached version here. Lucasfilm Games’ tweet is still available with a link to the privated trailer, but it’s not looking good. At best, the project is being rebooted and readied for a re-announcement.

At worst, it could be cancelled. Embracer Group, which owns Saber Interactive and Aspyr Media, has undergone a restructuring lately, closing studios like Volition and reportedly planning to sell Gearbox Entertainment. It wouldn’t be too strange to shutter an expensive project like the remake, but we’ll need to wait for more details. Stay tuned in the meantime.

Official communication on the project and its development, however, has been close to nonexistent for some time now- and it doesn’t seem like that’ll be changing anytime soon. As reported by Axios’ Stephen Totilo on Twitter, when asked in a recent Q&A with investors about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake and the state of its development, Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors refused to provide a comment, saying, “[My] favorite question. I have no further comments.”

Meanwhile, in Embracer Group’s recently published fiscal report, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is still listed among titles that are officially confirmed to be in development right now, as of May 24, 2023.

Upon its announcement, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake was confirmed to be a PS5 and PC title, though a release date wasn’t provided.

Originally led by Aspyr, the project was reportedly placed “on pause” following negative reception to a significant vertical slice. Aspyr had been working on the remake for over two years, and rumors began circulating about Saber Interactive taking over development (given its role as a support studio on the same).

The Embracer Group subsequently announced that one of its triple-A titles had shifted development to another internal studio. Many believed this referred to the Knights of the Old Republic remake, but the media holding company didn’t confirm the same. Though it wasn’t “expecting any material delays,” those familiar with the development said it likely needs at least two more years to complete.

Either way, it doesn’t seem to be releasing this year, and even a 2024 release is “wishful thinking unless they pare down the scope of the project,” as per Schreier.

Apparently, it wasn’t just Aspyr that was unsatisfied with the state of development. “Decision makers” at Embracer, Walt Disney Co. (owner of Lucasfilm Games) and Sony Group Corp (for which this is a console launch exclusive) were also allegedly “displeased” with progress. Nevertheless, those close to the project are “optimistic” that this transition will result in a better title. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

On Twitter, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier responded to a PC Gamer story about it potentially launching this year with, “The Knights of the Old Republic remake is absolutely not coming this year.” When another user responded that it could arrive in 2024, Schreier responded, “Even 2024 is wishful thinking unless they pare down the scope of the project.”

Announced for PS5 and PC, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake faced an indefinite internal delay apparently following a disappointing vertical slice. Sources at the studio felt that Saber Interactive, which acted as a supporting team on the remake, would take over its development, but this has yet to be confirmed. The same sources felt that 2025 was a more realistic launch window, so we’ll need to stay tuned for more details.
