A message from the one and only John Connor seems to tease that something else related to the franchise is coming soon.

The Terminator franchise has been ongoing in some form or fashion ever since the original film way back in 1984. While the original two films are stone cold classics, the series has struggled ever since to find its footing, with various different reboots and sequels of varying quality. On the gaming side, the latest game in the franchise was Terminator: Resistance (which saw an enhanced re-release that ironed out some of the issues the vanilla release had earlier this year). Now it seems the publisher is teasing that there is more to come.

On Reef Entertainment’s official Twitter, they tease an incoming message from John Connor, one of the central and most important characters in the Terminator saga. While the message is said to be from Connor, it features the ID label from the jacket of Kyle Reese, the protagonist of the first film, who goes back in time to save John’s mother from a Terminator attack. Whether this is more DLC for Resistance or something entirely new, we’ll apparently know next week.

Terminator: Resistance is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. An Enhanced version was released on PlayStation 5 and PC as well.

The best first person shooters you never played.

There’s obviously no shortage of excellent first person shooters in the market, given the genre’s enduring popularity, but at the same time, there’s also more than a few games in the group that just got lost in the shuffle. Games that might not have been the best games of their kind, but were still solid, enjoyable shooters that perhaps more people should have tried out. Here, we’re going to talk about a few such games.

SYNDICATE (2012)

In 2012, EA and Starbreeze teamed up for a revival of the Syndicate series, only instead of making a real-time tactics game like the originals, they made a first person shooter. It was drastic shift, of course, and 2012’s Syndicate doesn’t ever match the heights of its predecessors- but it’s still a fun ride. It looked really good for its time and brought its cyberpunk setting to life really well, and there was a lot of fun to be had in its combat encounters.

The developers of Evil Genius 2, The Riftbreaker, Terminator Resistance, and many more have spoken about how easy it is to implement AMD's supersampling tech in their games.

AMD has launched its supersampling tech, FidelityFX Super Resolution, with seven games supporting it at launch, and a whole slate of games confirmed to be adding support for it down the line. We’ve heard from developers in the past about the potential of FSR, but what are the devs who’ve already worked with the tech saying about it?

AMD recently uploaded several video interviews with developers of games with confirmed FSR support (transcribed by Wccftech), and the one thing they all seem to agree on is that tech is very easy to work with. Pretty much every developer has been able to add FSR support in just a few days, which is something we’ve heard from Square Enix studio Luminous Productions as well, whose Forspoken is supporting FSR.

Said Mateusz Makowiec, CTO at Terminator Resistance developer Teyon: “FSR is open source, so we were able to merge it with our internal engine changes. It took maybe a day to integrate it with the engine and then some time to add the option to the UI. We didn’t need to make any tweaks, it just worked.”

The Riftbreaker developer Exor Studios’ COO Pawel Lekki said: “FidelityFX Super Resolution is great because it’s super easy to implement. The initial implementation took us two days and as soon as we got implemented we started tweaking the game, the engine, to make it look as good as possible. That additional tweaking time was about an additional week, so in total I think the implementation time was just a bit over a week. This is really not a lot in terms of game development time schedules. Regardless of the platform, we can deliver the same technology, we don’t have to customize it per vendor, it just works.”

Evil Genius 2 studio Rebellion’s founder and CTO Chris Kingsley said: “Implementing FSR in our games was very easy, it was pretty much drop-in and it was only a few days. It was remarkably easy, I think it would be fair to say.”

Teemu Jyrkinen, CEO and creative director at Kingshunt developer Vaki Games said: “As a small game studio, we want to use technologies which are easy to implement and easy to use. With AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, the implementation was easy and we could see the benefits right away from the first playtest.”

Finally, Godfall developer Counterplay Games’ CTO and executive producer Emil Anticevic said: “It was important to us that their upscaling technology is an open solution, because this allows us not only to easily implement this in Godfall but also to customize it to achieve even better results. Not only is FSR easy to implement and to see a substantial performance boost, but it does so regardless of what brand of hardware you’re running on.”

Of course, the actual impact of FSR implementation remains to be seen, but early signs seem to be promising. Here’s hoping we see positive results in the not-too-distant future.

"Some additional work" is needed from Sony's side.

Following a delay, Teyon’s Terminator: Resistance Enhanced is slated to release exclusively for PS5 later this month. PS4 owners will receive a free upgrade for the PS5 version but it may be available later. The developer revealed that “some additional work” is needed from Sony to ensure the upgrades occur smoothly.

Currently, there’s a “strong” possibility that the PS4 to PS5 upgrade option won’t be available when Terminator: Resistance Enhanced launches. Instead, the upgrade option should follow “a short time later.” Teyon noted that it’s doing everything it can to ready the upgrade and make it available for players “as soon as possible.” Stay tuned for more details and updates on that front in the coming weeks.

Terminator: Resistance Enhanced releases on April 30th for PS5 with the game currently available for Xbox One and PC along with PS4. The Enhanced version includes the Infiltrator DLC where players control a Terminator that must hunt the Resistance along with running in 4K/60 FPS. Faster loading times and DualSense controller support is also included.

Last year saw the release of Terminator: Resistance, an action stealth game set in the apocalyptic future of the Terminator franchise. Overall, we found it to be an uneven experience even if there was a lot of interesting material within. The game is getting something of a second chance at life with an Enhanced version. It was going to come out in March, but now will be a tad later.

Announced on publisher Reef Entertainment’s official Twitter, the game has been pushed back to April. No reason was given, only the promise that more updates will come soon. There was also additional story content said to be coming to this version alongside multiple technical upgrades. You can read more details about what was to come in this new edition through here.

Terminator: Resistance – Enhanced is now set to release on PlayStation 5 and PC. The original is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC with those on PS4 said to be getting a free upgrade to Enhanced when it does launch.

You may recall that last year, the Terminator showed up all over the place from Mortal Kombat 11 to Ghost Recon in promotion of the latest film. There was also a tie-in game called Terminator: Resistance that flew under the radar and was something of a mixed bag. Now, though, it’s back and better than ever with the Enhanced version on next gen.

As announced from developer Reef Entertainment, early next year you’ll be able to get an enhanced version of the game on Sony’s latest console. It will come with all the upgrades and patches from the PC version and will even see a new mode called Infiltrator that flips the script and puts you in the shoes of a Terminator looking to cut through the resistance. In addition to that, there will also be paid DLC later in the year for the PS5 and PC versions that included a new campaign mode. Those with the game on PS4 will see a free upgrade to the PS5 version.

The vanilla release of Terminator: Resistance is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. As of now, Enhanced seems to only be coming to PS5 and PC with no mention of a next gen Xbox version.

Despite the hype, these bosses failed to pose much challenge.

This has been a year of awesome boss fights, especially in the wake of games like Resident Evil 2, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. We’ve also had some disappointments, either because of simplistic mechanics, purely bad design or the anticlimactic nature of how everything plays out. Let’s take a look at the most disappointing boss fights of 2019.

Octopus BT – Death Stranding

This is the first time Sam meets Higgs, the latter hamming it up as best as he can. Afterwards, Higgs summons a monstrous octopus BT to battle you. It’s threatening enough but not really. Stay on the rooftops and keep throwing Hematic Grenades. Despite all the flailing, it’s not really that aggressive and can be dealt with from a distance in almost comically easy fashion.

End the year on a high note with these games.

The year is finally coming to a close. We’ve survived yet another round of E3 and Gamescom, witnessed some excellent titles and stunning disappointments, and even saw the long-awaited release of Shenmue 3. What better way to end the year than with more games? Let’s take a look at the top 10 games releasing in December 2019.

Wattam

Of course it would be Katamari Damacy director Keita Takahashi making Wattam. How else could you explain the premise of walking around the world, befriending rocks, open mouths, trees and toilets to join hands and create melodies? It’s all quite whimsical in motion and gives Wattam a dream-like yet still unorthodox feel. Look for the game to release on December 17th for PS4 and PC.

Phoenix Point

Phoenix Point is an important title for many tactical turn-based fans. For some, it could be their next big game after XCOM with its factions, evolving enemies and lasting psychological system for its soldiers. For others, it’s a true spiritual successor to the original X-COM games from creator Julian Gollop, offering the next step forward in the tactical strategy war against aliens. With terrifying foes, intriguing mechanics and a tense setting, Phoenix Point releases on December 3rd for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Halo: Reach (PC/Xbox One)

Finally, we get to remember Reach as it should be – in gorgeous 4K resolution and 60 FPS. 343 Industries’ Halo: Reach comes to PC on December 3rd with its memorable campaign and hefty multiplayer modes like Firefight and Invasion (with Forge and Theater coming in 2020). For Xbox One players, Reach will round out Halo: The Master Chief Collection but for PC players, it kick-starts the collection’s release on PC. Whether you’re a fan of the series or not, Halo: Reach’s arrival next week is a momentous occasion.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries

It’s seemingly the month of nostalgia and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is a long time coming. As the first mainline title in the franchise since MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries in 2002, MechWarrior 5 offers combat in large hulking mechs with highly customizable parts. Taking part during the Third Succession War, various factions will be vying for supremacy, allowing you to take contracts and cement your legacy. MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is out on December 10th for PC.

Terminator Resistance

Teyon’s new Terminator shooter is an…odd title. It’s set in the year 2028 with the world decimated by Skynet’s robot incursions. You’ll battle through hordes of machines, killing and leveling up while also potentially altering the fates of those around you. What’s odd about the whole ordeal is that despite seeing significant criticism, the game has a rather positive rating on outlets like Steam. We’ll see how the console versions fare when they release on December 10th for North America.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York

Before venturing into the RPG-heavy Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, why not visit the Coteries of New York instead? Developed by Draw Distance, Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York is a text-based adventure centered around two factions – the Camarilla and Anarchs. Depending on one’s clan and choices, there will be unique dialogue opportunities and powers, ultimately influencing the game’s outcome. The title is out for PC on December 11th but also releases on Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch in Q1 2020.

Darksiders Genesis

And now for something completely different from the Darksiders franchise. Developed by Airship Syndicate, Darksiders Genesis is an isometric action hack and slash title that takes place before the first game. Horsemen Strife and War are on a quest to stop Lucifer from empowering the forces of Hell and that means lots of slicing and shooting. Co-op is included but solo players can switch between either Horseman at any time while taking advantage of various upgrades. Releasing on December 5th worldwide for PC and Google Stadia, Darksiders Genesis looks to offer a fun 15 hours or so of adventure.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey (Xbox One/PS4)

Panache Digital Games’ Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey didn’t get the most rousing reception when it first released on PC. However, there have been updates and improvements overtime, making this tale of evolution and survival more tenable. As part of a primate clan in the prehistoric age, you’ll be climbing trees, exploring the world, hunting, and even avoiding predators. All of this feeds into your experience and evolution as you journey across eight million years of history. Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey arrives on December 6th for Xbox One and PS4.

Life is Strange 2: Episode 5

Dontnod Entertainment’s fifth and final episode for Life is Strange 2 is out next month, bringing the adventure of the brothers Sean and Daniel Diaz to an end. This is always a pivotal moment for fans of the series, since it allows for experiencing the entire adventure from start to finish without any delays. It’s been a wild journey since the two initially fled Seattle en route to their father’s hometown in Mexico. How could things get any stranger? Episode 5 is out on December 3rd for Xbox One, PS4 and PC so it won’t be long before we find out.

Arise: A Simple Story

Arise: A Simple Story is another dream-like adventure game but one that explores the memories of two individuals across shifting landscapes and seasons. As a puzzle adventure title, players will have the ability to manipulate time, altering the environment as they see fit. While there’s still a lot we don’t know, Arise’s art-style looks great and the story has strong emotional potential. It’s out on December 3rd for PS4 and PC.

A run-of-the-mill but licensed sci-fi shooter that mixes multiple genres into one compiled straight shooter journey.

It’s a rarity in today’s time to see a licensed video game title with passion put into the project, and while Terminator: Resistance may be neglected as a shooter this holiday season, the developers of Teyon are willing to put forth more than a clear-cut adventure into the cyberpunk world created by James Cameron.

Right off the bat of booting up the game, players are welcomed to a still and deadly-looking Terminator staring right at you with the menu options by the side. It’s a good way to acknowledge and what to expect out of this adventure in the Terminator world: an iconic and cinematic villain in a freeze position with human teeth that represents the series and what to come.

The humans of the Resistance don’t know what to expect as Skynet continues to ravish the planet of Earth, enabling an apocalyptic atmosphere after the events of Judgement Day, which were showcased in the well-known films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator whilst being created and directed by James Cameron.

Licensed as a tie-in to the original two films, you play as Jacob Rivers, a solider of the Resistance who makes his way up from an ordinary scavenger to a recognized member fighting against the machines. It comes with causal knowledge that the name John Connor might ring a bell to some or a great many, for he is the leader of the Resistance, and an imperative character to the lore of the films, and it’s his cause, your involvement, and the causes and effects of Judgement Day that drive this narrative to familiar territory to those who can recall the sci-fi action blockbusters that have garnered both critical and commercial success.

"While there are barely any complaints with the sound design and effects present in the game, the score can’t seem to land on even ground when it comes to composing scenes for the narrative."

The gameplay borrows similar mechanics from a copious amount of well-known shooter tropes: from the normal run-and-gun scenarios between you and machine, to quietly approaching a plasma turret to either destroy or hack, it’s a well-rounded mix of survival and action that you can dictate just by going about and deciding what the best outcome can be.

The game doesn’t follow an open world aspect to its code, but the environments and quests make it seem so, allowing you to delve further into the backstory of the world rather than just progressing through and shooting up the place like your ordinary first-person shooter, though merely by your choice since exploring throughout the map offers little to no reward other than a wide load of trade resources used for currency.

The game takes place after the events of Judgement Day, which are shown in the films but never explored thoroughly (in the case of the first two released movies), where the machines of Skynet have disrupted the course of humanity through nuclear warfare and left the place desolate and lonely, leaving only the fighters and survivors to stand against the man-made oppressors who aim to hunt and kill them all. Jacob Rivers of the Resistance is your average scavenger who eventually gets involved in all of this, for he is under Termination from Skynet. It’s where the core and heart of the plot drive from, and it makes you intrigued in being involved with Jacob more so than your average first-person shooter.

For a sci-fi action title, the mechanics are a little too familiar by today’s standards, set within a recognized world where the lore and tricks and know-how’s are easy to recall and utilize from previous games one has played. Terminator: Resistance offers almost nothing new to the table, other than combining a few memorable aspects from other distinguishable titles: the terror and pure heart-stabbing freezes of Alien: Isolation is juiced with the enemy takedowns and environment terrorism gets blended with the noticeable shooting mechanics that become too easy to get accustomed to. And while that isn’t a big issue with this title, it still offers nothing fresh to the table in terms of first-person adventures.

As aforementioned, it’s your standard shooter, but the game does include multiple RPG elements from a few well-known titles, particularly those from Bethesda. Some character choices can impact quests, but it isn’t brought up as such a big issue when you’re merely shooting your way through the game like futuristic side chapter from a marine’s nightmare. The Skill trees and lack of distinctive weaponry make the game more of a shooter-survival with a couple choices rather than something fresh to bring forward: Any recognizable FPS mechanic one can recall will most definitely be found here.

If one can recall the future sequences from the films, they can certainly remember the sound effects and eerie score by Brad Fiedel that make the series so memorable. The plasma blasters to the roaring sounds of the patrolling machines replicate the frightening vibe the human-killing machines would put off.

While there are barely any complaints with the sound design and effects present in the game, the score can’t seem to land on even ground when it comes to composing scenes for the narrative. Indeed, when encountering enemies, the music kicks up and it works flawlessly with the anxiety of being chased by a T-800 (similar to the chase terrors of Outlast and Alien: Isolation) and partially scouted by a drone, but anywhere else in the game it seems to switch from heavy metal guitar riffs to intense and cinematic percussions that don’t mix well with each other. The overall score presents itself with some noteworthy patterns, but not enough to be inspired by when it comes to killing machines.

For a shooter that basically came out of nowhere, the graphics look like they line up with your standardized FPS title that you randomly boot up on an early Saturday morning away from work. Utilizing an engine with great lighting effects, the pixels the player will see before them will perfectly capture that gritty and desolate world the films were imaging where machines took over the Earth: gray landscapes littered with rubble and death buried beneath a chilly sky, only to be awaken by more ensuing chaos being performed by the ever-growing machines of Skynet.

This is where the game shines, and I would always stop here and there to glance at the soulless sky, even when a scout drone was nearby. Verily, the night sections of the game are a replicate of Cameron’s vision from the original and the day battles against the machines feel and look similar to those from the film Terminator: Salvation.

While there are some surfacing issues and the character animations are worse than any Bethesda RPG title that can come to mind, the voice acting is exceptionally well-performed, providing a human backbone to the FPS shooter title you embark on that gives you context and emotion to remember by when you face off against the machines.

Particularly from the main voice actor who voices Jacob Rivers, the performances can make up for the poor emotion animations that made it seem like an audiobook for these NPCs’ tragedies might be more fitting than the effort put behind the graphics for facial animations and general character stances and designs.

"With barely any exploration rewards to look forward, this FPS-RPG mix-up might just be a miss for those who looking for something different aside from other well-known titles in the gaming industry."

With no multiplayer component attached and no side game activity to attend to, the players can merely play through the campaign through different difficulty modes if one was feeling oh so fancy for it, but since the game mixed various genres of horror, adventure, RPG, and survival into it, there’s not a ton of replay value that makes me want to return to fight against the machines from the inception of the game’s narrative. While it was fun scavenging the land for trade resources and sneaking past patrols of machines on the streets, it felt much more like a one-off adventure for the hell of it rather than a promising title to return to.

You just keep going forward through the evolution of Jacob Rivers without feeling much influence from the game’s objectives and results. It’s said that your choices reflect the world around you in the game, but I didn’t really feel that impact since the tale of your influence merely goes through the phases with some dialogue options that may change a word or two. Because of that, there’s not a lot of reason to return to the campaign if I already know what to expect and what with.

With barely any exploration rewards to look forward, this FPS-RPG mix-up might just be a miss for those who looking for something different aside from other well-known titles in the gaming industry. Terminator: Resistance maybe a fun sci-fi stealthy-or-deadly adventure for fans of the film series, but the shooter doesn’t do much to separate itself from the popular genre we all know and love.
