Supermassive Games confirmed yesterday that new information on their upcoming horror adventure title, Man of Medan – the first instalment in The Dark Pictures anthology series – would be coming on May 21, and true to their word, new information is indeed here. Supermassive and Bandai Namco have released a new trailer for the game, which confirms that the game will be out in August this year.

The trailer puts a great deal of emphasis on the choice and consequence mechanics that made Supermassive’s previous game, Until Dawn, such a huge success, and look to be returning in full force in Man of Medan. The main environment that the game will take place in, which is a sunken ghost ship from the Second World War, is also show off. Choices and horrors abound aplenty, and the new trailer, which you can view below, gives us a pretty solid taste of both.

Man of Medan will be out on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on August 30th. Just a few days back, we also got a look at over ten minutes of gameplay footage from the horror adventure title- take a look through here.

Developers of Until Dawn Supermassive Games announced at Gamescom this year that they’d be partnering with Bandai Namco to make The Dark Pictures, an anthology of horror titles, which, unlike the developer’s last few titles, wouldn’t be exclusives to the PS4.

However, it seems like their days of making PlayStation exclusive titles aren’t over yet. While speaking with Russian website 4PDA (via Reddit), Supermassive’s Pete Samuels confirmed that there are “several” PlayStation exclusives currently in development at the studio. “Well, the relationship with Sony is still excellent,” he said. “We are working on several unannounced PS exclusives. But we can’t talk about them right now.”

After Until Dawn, Supermassive made a few more PS4 exclusive titles, such as the VR game The Inpatient, and the PlayLink title Hidden Agenda, neither of which was really too successful. The PlayStation exclusives they have in development could be something along those lines, or perhaps a big budget AAA release similar to Until Dawn- maybe even for the PS5.

We don’t know either way, but hopefully, something will be announced soon. Until then, Man of Medan, the first game in The Dark Pictures anthology, is out next year for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

The story in Man of Medan follows four young Americans and the captain of a boat who go out at sea to try and find some sunken treasure. It looks like things soon turn bad when they get aboard a ghost ship and are faced with some unimaginable horrors. Players will be able to choose to play any one of the five protagonists and will be able to experience the story from their unique perspective. Each game the anthology will be similarly replayable with branching paths and multiple endings for players to discover.

Each game in the series is going to be a standalone experience- that’s what anthology means, after all. “We are incredibly excited to announce The Dark Pictures Anthology and the first game in the series, Man of Medan,” said Pete Samuels, executive producer of Man of Medan and CEO of Supermassive Games, in a press statement.

“With each title being a standalone game, we have the opportunity to create a unique horror experience every time, with new stories, settings, characters and cast,” he continued. “As a studio we have a passion to deliver powerful cinematic horror, and we can’t wait for players to experience these new games across PS4, Xbox, and PC. We have a great partner in Bandai Namco Entertainment and we look forward to working with them to help bring these terrifying tales to gamers everywhere.”

Rumours of a new multiplatform title by Until Dawn developers Supermassive had been circulating for some time, while Bandai Namco had also been teasing something similar over the last few weeks. Many, ourselves included, have been putting two and two together, and now that it’s been actually confirmed, we’re pretty excited about it. Man of Medan, the first game in The Dark Pictures, is set to release for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2019.
