The studio's founder took to social media to talk about how the Kickstarter for Wasteland 2 culminated in Clockwork Revolution.

While celebrating the reception to the recent trailers for Clockwork Revolution, developer inXile Entertainment’s founder and boss Brian Fargo took to social media to talk about how the game wouldn’t have been possible without crowdfunding. Referring to a video talking about the studio’s 20-year history, Fargo referred to the Kickstarter campaign that was run to fund the development of tactical RPG Wasteland 2.

“That Kickstarter campaign was a Hail Mary pass to allow us to go back to making the kind of role-playing games we wanted to and eventually being part of Microsoft,” wrote Fargo on social media platform X, referring to the Kickstarter campaign for Wasteland 2. “That culminated into Clockwork Revolution.”

The video, which you can check out below, offers us a 20-minute look at the studio’s history, featuring several developers that work for the studio talking about their time having worked on games like Wasteland 2, and Torment: Tides of Numenera. The video also included Fargo talking about his time in the gaming industry back when he founded Interplay in 1983.

“We figured out we were able to pitch the games we want to make instead of pitching the game you know you can sell, which is a much more fun place to be,” said inXile co-founder Matt Findley in the video.

Studio president Chris Keenan also spoke about how the decision to go with a Kickstarter campaign to fund Wasteland 2 came about, recalling a story about a conversation he had with Fargo.

“Brian had a conversation with me at one point,” recalled Keenan. “[He] said, ‘Hey listen. We’re going to give this Kickstarter a try with Wasteland 2. I’m going to personally fund you out of my pocket for the next couple months […] if it’s successful you can direct that game, if it’s not we shake hands and it’s been a great run.'”

The newest title by inXile, Clockwork Revolution, is currently in development for PC and Xbox Series X/S. The game recently got a new trailer during Xbox Games Showcase 2025, where we got a great look at the clockpunk aesthetics that the upcoming title is going for.

Fargo, along with game director Chad Moore, have revealed some details about Clockwork Revolution, including the emphasis on conversations, and how the studio wants to offer a deep reactive RPG to players rather than focusing on just cinematics.

“It was important for us to speak directly to core roleplaying fans and show what this game really is,” said Fargo. “We slow things down for a moment, let the conversation breathe, and show the systems at work. That scene with Alfie isn’t just dramatic, it sets the tone. This is a game that can be brutal. Not just in combat, but in the choices you make and how the world responds. It’s not just about cinematics, it’s about the kind of deep, reactive RPG we love to build, and that our players expect.”

Moore also revealed details about how the multi-person conversations in Clockwork Revolution will work, and how they will affect the storytelling and gameplay.

The Director's Cut Digital Classic Edition also includes the first Wasteland for free.

InXile Entertainment’s Wasteland 3 is out next year and will be coming to Xbox One, PS4 and PC. So what better way to prepare for it then by getting Wasteland 2 for free? Head over to GOG to claim the Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut Digital Classic Edition. It’s free till December 12th.

But what about the first Wasteland? That’s the real kicker -in addition to Wasteland 2, players will also receive Wasteland 1 for free. You can thus experience the journey of the Desert Rangers from the very beginning before the sequel arrives.

As for Wasteland 3, it’s currently slated to release on May 19th 2020. It takes players to Colorado which is ruled by the Patriarch. You’re effectively the last surviving member of Ranger squad Team November and must find a way to survive in the murderous frozen wastes. The game promises to be over 50 hours long, not counting the replay value possible from all the choices made. Stay tuned for more details en route to release.

Cracking the code.

Games and the industry surrounding them aren’t just about clear-cut, in-your-face experiences. Developers and publishers like to hide secrets deep within their games, and we as players love uncovering them. Sometimes we do it within days, sometimes it takes years, while surely, there are countless secrets to do with games that still haven’t been uncovered. From neat little easter eggs to major hints about upcoming things, these secrets can point to a number of different things, but the thrill of cracking the code and uncovering what lies underneath is undeniable. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at a few such secrets that gamers managed to crack.

CYBERPUNK 2077’S E3 2018 SECRET MESSAGE

Cyberpunk 2077 was re-revealed by CD Projekt RED at last year’s E3 with a trailer at Microsoft’s press event, but the trailer was a significant one for multiple reasons. Within the trailer, CD Projekt hid a lengthy message, within which they discussed multiple things, from the development of the game, to whether or not it will be DRM-free, to when they’ll be speaking of a release date, to whether the game will have microtransactions, and more.

This patch is perfect for Switch.

Wasteland 2 launched on the Nintendo Switch last year, bringing a new brand of RPG (the CRPG brand, to be specific) to Nintendo fans. However, the game’s Switch port had some problem. The game, built on Unity, has issues running properly on more powerful platforms at the best of times (since Unity has optimization issues with a lot of hardware).

These issues include slowdown and frame rate drops, as well as game crashes during some encounters. Until now, Switch owners of Wasteland 2 have had no recourse but to simply shrug these problems off. Happily enough, today, inXile Entertainment finally announced patch 1.0.1, which resolves these problems, and is available to download now.

If you have automatic updates turned on on your Switch, and leave it in Sleep Mode, the update will be automatically downloaded and applied. If not, you can just initiate it from the home screen for yourself. Wasteland 2 is out now on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

That lovely cRPG jank, now on the go.

Wasteland 2, which was the crowdfunded follow-up to the classic cRPG from the 1980s and actually acted as the spiritual predecessor to Fallout, is available finally now on the Nintendo Switch, as has been previously announced. The game comes to the Switch in the guise of the much improved Director’s Cut (which launched on other systems a few years ago).

Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut is one of the first major cRPG releases on Nintendo’s hybrid platform (another major one set to come to Switch is Pillars of Eternity 2 later this year), bringing its brand of exploration, dialog trees, dynamic storytelling, and skill checks to the Nintendo audience. The actual game itself seems to be pretty much the same thing as it is on other platforms- for $30, that’s not a bad deal at all. It remains to be seen, however, whether or not there are any specific performance or graphical issues with the Switch version of the game.

Wasteland 2 is also available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

The fan favourite RPG has been confirmed for Nintendo's hybrid system.

Wasteland 2 was actually teased for the Switch a while back, but now, it has been officially announced for Nintendo’s platform with a new announcement trailer that you can see for yourself below. Wasteland 2 is a sequel to the original Wasteland, which launched all the way back in the 1980s, and served as the inspiration for Fallout, and was inXile’s attempt to make a modern CRPG without any concessions made to streamlining.

It turned out to be a good effort, especially after the “director’s cut” (which went on to launch on PS4 and Xbox One to boot). Now, it will also be coming to the Switch. Which is excellent news- the prospect of playing a round based CRPG like this on the go sounds incredible.

I have to admit that between Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity 2, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Ys 8, Shining Resonance: Refrain, as well as the upcoming Dark Souls Remastered, The World Ends With You, Octopath Traveler, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee, and Shin Megami Tensei V, the Switch is starting to rapidly become a hub for RPGs- and I love it.

EA continues to expand the non-publisher side of its game selection.

Electronic Arts continues to expand its vault in Origin Access, the PC equivalent of EA Access available for just $5 per month (or $30 per year). Among the new titles added are Out of the Park Baseball 19, Lost Castle, Wasteland 2 and The Witness. Much like the Batman Arkham titles added at the beginning of March, these are some of the first non-EA games to be added to the vault.

InXile Entertainment’s Wasteland 2 and Thekla Inc’s The Witness are the highlights having both garnered critical acclaim. Wastleland 2 offers tactical RPG combat in a post-apocalyptic nuclear setting, following up from the cult classic. The Witness is a first person adventure title where solving puzzles on a mysterious island is the key to success.

Bulletstorm will also be coming to EA Access albeit as a “Lite” version but there’s no release date on its addition just yet. Origin Access also offers early access to betas for EA titles along with discounts on digital content so it might be worth checking out.

Brian Fargo 'teases' the Switch version.

Wasteland 2, inXile and Brian Fargo’s excellent sequel to the classic cRPG that would go on to inspire Fallout, is already available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One- but now, it will also be coming to the Nintendo Switch. Posting on Twitter, Brian Fargo shared a picture of the game running on the Nintendo Switch, with the caption ‘how about a little tease.’

Given that Wasteland 2 is a fantastic and expansive round based cRPG, it would be uniquely suited to the Switch, and it would benefit greatly from its portability. Concerns about how it might run abound, however- the game runs on Unity, which as an engine is not the most optimized in the world, and the game already chugs on PS4 and Xbox One. We can only hope that it is optimized for the hybrid system before it is released on it.

For now, Wasteland 2 is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. More details about the Nintendo Switch version will presumably follow.

Wasteland 2's success on consoles prompted the decision.

Torment: Tides of Numenera promises to be a new age spiritual successor to Planescape Torment, the legendary RPG by Black Isle Studios that is often called the greatest example of its genre. The game has so far suffered delays, and a lack of information, but now, it seems as though plans for the game’s release are solidly in place- and that they include exposure to a much wider audience than the game would have had otherwise.

You see, Torment will be launching on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One alongside the PC version when it launches in the first quarter of next year, publisher Techland confirmed to Eurogamer today. The decision was ultimately arrived at after an earlier inXile game, Wasteland 2, did very well upon its console release.

“Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut‘s success and the gratitude expressed by a lot of fans after this release made us begin to plan the Torment: Tides of Numenera for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,” inXile’s Brian Fargo said. “We’re especially excited to work with Techland, who – as a fellow developer – know exactly how to execute such a release without compromising the quality.”

Torment‘s console versions will be shown off at Gamescom this year, which means we are just a couple of weeks away from seeing the game in action. Until then, if you want to get an idea of how the console version of the game plays, you can just check out the new gameplay trailer of the game, showcasing some console version footage, below.
