The Outer Worlds’ “Supernova” Mode is Basically Survival

Manage your thirst, hunger, and exhaustion to stay in top shape (or else).

Obsidian Entertainment continues to tease details for its FPS/RPG The Outer Worlds. In the recent Game Informer Show, directors Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky revealed that there would be a survival mode of sorts called Supernova. It’s one of a few different modes, but offers a heftier challenge.

Supernova involves managing hunger, thirst, and exhaustion. Eating and drinking while sleeping regularly will help stave off any negative effects. Cain and Boyarsky also offered some insight into crafting and noted that it doesn’t really exist at all. You can modify gear with different parts and change how it functions, but the real challenge is in finding special gear with unique abilities.

Random loot will also be a thing, though there will also be plenty of hand-crafted items to discover. Enemies have their own distinct weapons and gear, so that can be helpful if there are certain items you like. Level-scaling for some creatures, dynamic weather, and much more were also discussed. At some point, Obsidian wanted to include gravity as a mechanic, but it turned out to not be possible.

The Outer Worlds is currently in development for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. It’s slated to release later this year.
