Tokyo Game Show 2020 Canceled, Online Event Planned

More details to come later this month.

Like many other events this year, Tokyo Game Show 2020 has been canceled. In a recent statement, the management team revealed that cancellation was due to the recent COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Though numbers aren’t as high as other developed nations, the situation in Japan “remains unpredictable”.

“Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on a global scale and the situation remains unpredictable in Japan as well, the organizer and the co-organizers have reached this decision after a long consideration to place the utmost priority on the health and safety of visitors, exhibitors and stakeholders. We ask for your kind understanding and cooperation.”

The event was originally slated to take place from September 24th to 27th. Instead of an on-site event, there will now be a digital event instead with more information to come later this month. A livestream with all the major announcements planned or even standalone reveals by participating titles wouldn’t be unexpected.

Tokyo Game Show 2020 is just the latest in several events to be canceled and held online, joining the ranks of GDC 2020, BitSummit and Gamescom 2020. E3 2020 is the one exception since there won’t be an online experience in its place. Plenty of reveals are still slated to take place with the likes of the Summer Game Fest and IGN’s Summer of Gaming so stay tuned.
