Tomb Raider Reboot Sold 8.5 Million, Set Franchise Record

Sounds like Microsoft may have made a good decision snagging up the sequel.

Memories of Square Enix whining about the sales performance of the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot are long gone now- in its place, we have a title that managed to pull some incredibly strong numbers, such strong numbers, in fact, that it is now the highest selling game in its entire franchise.

The 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, Square Enix announced today, has sold a staggering 8.5 million copies worldwide. This is, incidentally, more than any single game of Uncharted has sold yet. Of course, the flipside is, Uncharted sells to an audience on one platform, while Tomb Raider was selling to an audience on five.

With such strong numbers, all eyes are now on Rise of the Tomb Raider, the sequel to the reboot that promises to return to the series’ roots in terms of its gameplay mechanics and setup, and which will be exclusive to the Xbox, launching this holiday season. Will that title manage to post such numbers on just two systems? Or will Square Enix see a drop in sales?

We only have to wait for this holiday season to find out.
