A new Xbox Wire post has been released, offering a bit more information on Smart Delivery. The feature will allow Xbox One players who purchase a game to receive an Xbox Series X version at no extra cost (though it’s dependent on when the latter becomes available). Along with digital titles, Smart Delivery will also work with physical games and progression will carry over between versions.
It also outlined a few scenarios for how Smart Delivery works. For Gears 5, those who own it on Game Pass or Xbox One can receive an Xbox Series X optimized version at launch. Halo Infinite works a bit differently – it’s out on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X but only needs to be purchased once. Smart Delivery will automatically detect the console that you’re running the game on and deliver the required version.
Cyberpunk 2077 is an interesting example. Purchase it for Xbox One and it can be played in compatibility mode on the Xbox Series X. All progress will carry over as well. Once the Xbox Series X optimized version of the game is out, you’ll receive the upgrade for free.
This is all dependent on whether a developer or publisher decides to support Smart Delivery, of course. A list of supported games was enclosed in the post and while many names are familiar, the recently revealed Metal: Hellslinger has been included.
