Alan Wake 2 is Split “About 50/50” Across Both Protagonists, Director Says

"50/50 felt about right for us from a pacing perspective," says game director Kyle Rowley about Alan Wake 2's co-protagonists.

Alan Wake 2 is looking like it’s going to be a significant departure from its predecessor in many ways, and one in particular that has stood out so far is the fact that it’s going to have two protagonists sharing the spotlight, with the titular hero Alan Wake being joined by newcomer Saga Anderson, an FBI profiler who comes to Bright Falls to investigate a string of ritual murders.

But how much time are we going to be spending as each of them? Is one protagonist going to have more of a role to play than the other, or is Alan Wake 2 going to give equal footing to both of them? According to game director Kyle Rowley, you should be expecting the latter.

In a recent interview with MP1st, when asked about the same, Rowley said that the ratio between Alan and Saga’s playable sections is “about 50/50”, which “felt right” for the game’s pacing.

“It’s about 50/50,” Rowley said. “It’s important obviously that we’re creating an Alan Wake sequel, so we need to make sure we wanted to represent Alan as a character. But 50/50 felt about right for us from a pacing perspective. Alan is present in Saga’s side of the story as well, so it’s not like he’s only in the dark place that we kind of showed him in the trailers and stuff that he’s kind of also in some of those areas.”

It has previously confirmed that Alan Wake 2 is going to be over 20 hours long, making it Remedy Entertainment’s longest game ever, which would mean we’re looking at approximately 10 hours per protagonist. Of course, given the fact that, as Rowley mentioned, Alan and Saga’s stories are going to be interconnected, it’s fair to assume that the two will also overlap with each other.

Alan Wake 2 is due out on October 27 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It will have Performance Mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X, but now on Xbox Series S.
