Though slated to be officially announced at EA Play Live 2021, Battlefield 2042’s upcoming unannounced mode from Ripple Effect Studios has leaked early. According to preview by GameRant (discovered by ResetEra’s Theorry and since pulled, though it’s visible on Wayback Machine), the mode is called Battlefield Portal. The image below indicates that players can create their own maps from those present in Battlefield 2042 along with six reimagined classic maps from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3.
The classic maps in question are Battle of the Bulge and El Alamein from Battlefield 1942; Valpraiso and Arica Harbor from Battlefield: Bad Company 2; and Caspian Border and Noshahr Canals from Battlefield 3. There also over 40 weapons, more than 30 gadgets and 40+ vehicles from “three theaters of war” along with Battlefield 2042. All assets fro the classic games have been rebuilt from the ground-up in the Frostbite Engine.
Along with the Builder itself, there are two main options in Battlefield Portal, one for experiences created by DICE and another for modes built by the community and curated by the developer which rotate periodically. Though you can’t mix and match soldiers from different eras on the same team, you can still have a team of World War 2 era fighters taking on a team of Battlefield 2042’s Specialists. On top of this, shared progression is in effect, allowing players to earn XP and Rank regardless of the mode. More content will also be added to Battlefield Portal post-launch.
Battlefield 2042 is out on October 22nd for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5 and PC. Stay tuned for more details and gameplay footage on Battlefield Portal when it’s revealed at EA Play Live 2021, which starts at 10 AM PST.
