DOOM Eternal Will Be “The Best Thing We’ve Ever Done,” Says Game Director

id Software are confident in the quality of the upcoming first person shooter.

In 2016, with the entire industry rooting for them, id Software managed to do something we’d all been hoping they would do- they brought back DOOM, and did so in absolutely spectacular fashion. Soon, they’ll be following up on that success with DOOM Eternal, and blessedly, the shooter looks like it’s going to be even better than its predecessor- bigger, better, and crazier than DOOM (2016) in every way possible.

And that’s very much a sentiment that the developers share as well. Speaking with GamesIndustry, game director Marty Stratton said that from the get-go, with DOOM Eternal, id Software’s intention has been to make something that not only surpasses the 2016 title, but also pushes the limits of everything they’re doing. As a result, according to Stratton, DOOM Eternal is very likely going to be the studio’s best game till date.

“When we finished Doom 2016, we knew we surprised people and a lot of people just wanted more,” Stratton said. “We could have done more, but I think we’ve looked at Doom Eternal and said, ‘How can we raise the bar in every aspect, from technology to design to world-building to the epic scope and scale to the multiplayer battle mode?’ We’re just pushing every piece of it further than I think we’ve ever pushed on a game. It’s ultimately turning out to be I think the best thing we’ve ever done.”

Saying DOOM Eternal is going to be id’s best game ever is a huge claim, considering the pedigree and legacy of this legendary developer, but it’s not like the game doesn’t have the potential to do so. It’s certainly looked stellar in all that we’ve seen of it so far- here’s hoping the final product lives up to the billing.

Recently, we got an extended look at its multiplayer component, the Battle Mode, and what sort of an experience players can expect from it.
