Dragon Age: The Veilguard Has Multiple Large, Open Areas to Explore

The upcoming fantasy RPG was confirmed to be a linear, mission-based game a while back, but BioWare says there's still plenty of room for exploration.

Games almost feel compelled to be open world in today’s day and age, even when there’s no need for them to be, and that stands doubly true for many of the biggest AAA release. It came as a pleasant surprise, then, when BioWare confirmed earlier in the year that the upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard was instead going to adopt mission-based approach.

Even so, that doesn’t mean those who enjoy exploration in games will be left starving. In a recent Discord Q&A (summarized and compiled by @shinobi602 on Twitter), the developer revealed that though quests tied to the main story are going to be largely linear and handcrafted, outside of missions, players will still get the chance to freely explore a number of large and open environments, including Arlathan Forest, the Hossberg Wetlands, and more.

How large these environments will be remains to seen, but on paper, Dragon Age: The Veilguard certainly seems to be striking the right balance. Hopefully, that’s something that we’ll be able to experience in the game as well.

In the same Discord Q&A, BioWare also revealed new details on the game’s gear system and UI customization, among other things. Read more on that through here.
