A new branch for Fallout 4‘s backend, going by the development title of newvegas2, has spurred the franchise’s fanbase into believing that a possible sequel for cult-classic Fallout: New Vegas is in the works. The new branch can be spotted on SteamDB after recent update, as caught by GameSpot.
Bethesda has since quickly deleted references to newvegas2, fuelling quite a bit of speculation in the community. However, it is worth noting that Bethesda hasn’t made any actual announcement regarding a sequel to Fallout: New Vegas (even if there have been some murmurings that sequel may be in very early discussions), and the branch popping up as an update for Fallout 4 could more simply indicate just a DLC featuring items from Fallout: New Vegas.
Fallout 4 is slated to get updated to take advantage of the improved hardware on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 some time in 2023. Originally having been released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, the game also got an update with frame rate boost on Xbox Series X/S.
Fallout 4 was originally released in November 2015, and was quite successful, making $750 million in the first 24 hours of its release. It has also seen a fair number of DLC releases, including Far Harbor and Nuka World.
