The Coalition have been quite vocal about their ambitions for the Gears of War franchise and how they’re using Gears 5 to express those ambitions. After having established themselves as worthy custodians for Microsoft’s premier franchise with the solid-yet-safe Gears of War 4, the studio is now looking to really blow things up with the upcoming sequel.
While speaking with Game Informer, Gears 5’s multiplayer design director Ryan Cleven spoke about this yet again, calling it the largest game in the series to date, with the largest ever campaign, largest ever PvE offerings, and largest ever Versus.
“Gears 5 is the largest Gears of War to date; it’s the largest campaign ever made, the largest PvE ever made, the largest versus ever made,” said Cleven. “The team at The Coalition is an extremely talented but focused team that believes in this game. They’re extremely passionate about bringing their mark, a high degree of quality, and a legacy that Gears fans will recognize. There is no magic bullet; it’s trusting the people around you. [Studio head Rod Fergusson] has this saying he repeats every time we start a new project: ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ That’s something we really believe in at the studio. We believe in trusting each other so we can get efficiency out of that.”
Though information on the game’s campaign has been lacking ever since the game’s initial reveal at E3 2018 (barring some leaks here and there), The Coalition has been pulling back the curtain on the game’s multiplayer component quite bit, from its new Escape Mode to the map editor that comes along with it, and a whole lot else. It remains to be seen whether it lives up to the billing for the largest game in the series, but The Coalition promises more information on the game will continue to be revealed leading up to its launch, so we should find out soon enough.
Gears 5 is out on September 10 for the Xbox One and PC- but a tech test for its Versus component will be going live tomorrow for Game Pass subscribers and pre-order holders.
