Grand Theft Auto 5 Lifetime Sales Cross 165 Million Units

Take-Two EVP of finance Hannah Sage says that the recently released Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions exceeded expectations.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is big success for Rockstar Games but has a ways to go before it can top Grand Theft Auto 5. First released in September 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360, it’s sold over 165 million units till date according to Take Two Interactive’s Q4 FY 2022 earnings report.

The title maintained its growth rate of five million sales per quarter even with the release of Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions. However, Take-Two EVP of finance Hannah Sage told GamesIndustry that the current-gen versions still exceeded expectations. As per The NPD Group’s data for the three years ending March 2022, Grand Theft Auto 5 is the best-selling game for the United States in both unit and dollar sales for the last decade. Overall, the Grand Theft Auto series has sold-in over 375 million units.

The next Grand Theft Auto is confirmed to be in active development with Rockstar Magazine’s Chris Klippel reporting in March that a “major milestone” had been reached. A “real announcement” is allegedly coming by the end of 2022 but Rockstar has stated that it will be “sharing more as soon as we are ready.”
