As one of Marvel’s biggest properties and one of the most popular superhero characters of all time, there have been plenty of questions about whether Spider-Man will be joining the roster of playable characters in Square Enix’s upcoming Marvel Avengers, especially with the publisher having promised a stream of new playable characters coming to the game following its launch as post-launch content. New evidence might suggests that Spidey will indeed be coming to Marvel’s Avengers… but there’s a catch.
A listing for the game recently went on on online retailer Base.com’s website, and the game’s description claimed that Spider-Man will be a playable character in the game- but only on PS4. The listing has since been taken down, but you can take a look at its archived version through here.
Sony have an exclusive marketing deal with Square Enix for Marvel’s Avengers, which entails not only the PS4 getting access to the game’s upcoming beta before other platforms, but also other (as-of-yet unspecified) benefits as far as the post-launch support is concerned. There’s also the fact that Sony holds the exclusive rights to the Spider-Man license for games and films, which is certainly an important factor to consider here.
Of course, this hasn’t come through any official channels, so it’s best not to take this as confirmation as yet, but if this does indeed turn out to be true, I assume scores of non-PlayStation players will be very unhappy about such major content being gated from them.
Marvel’s Avengers is out on September 4 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia, and will also be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X later in the year. Its beta kicks off later this week- you can read all about what content it will include through here. Meanwhile, Square Enix recently also confirmed that Hawkeye will be the first character to be added to the game post-launch.
