It’s been quite some time since we last saw a new release in the Gears of War franchise, but recent developments might indicate that there could be some movement on that front soon enough. Microsoft has filed a new trademark registration for the Gears of War franchise with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Of course, companies refiling and renewing trademarks of existing properties is far from an uncommon occurrence, but do often tend to go hand-in-hand with upcoming releases and announcements. Reports have previously indicated that a remastered Gears of War collection – similar in nature to Halo: The Master Chief Collection – is in the works.
The fact that the trademark registration refers to the series as Gears of War is certainly interesting, seeing as Microsoft has officially referred to recent entries simply as Gears, with the likes of Gears 5, Gears Tactics, and Gears POP!
Of course, job listings have suggested that development of the next mainline Gears title is also underway, but it’s unlikely that that project is anywhere close to being ready to be unveiled. As per reports, The Coalition has multiple titles in development, of which the one closest to launch is new IP and is set to be smaller, more experimental game.
