PlatinumGames have been undergoing an impressive expansion of late, having taken big steps towards self-publishing thanks to capital alliance with Chinese giant Tencent. That’s led to growth in other ways as well- for instance, they recently opened up a new studio, through which they’ll be focusing primarily on live service games for consoles.
Going forward, it’s clear that the studio wants to try new things, and as far as development is concerned, that goes for genres of games as well. From Bayonetta and Vanquish to Astral Chain and Nier: Automata, Platinum have always been known as the masters of the action genre. In a recent interview with US Gamer, though, studio head Atsushi Inaba said they don’t want to be pigeonholed, and want to try and branch out into completely new genres of games as well.
“As we mentioned before, it’s not like we are of the stance of, ‘Oh, we’re an action game maker,'” Inaba said. “We want to invent new things for the gaming world. So for me, absolutely. I would very much like the opportunity to make something like that. Something that necessarily isn’t an action game. Maybe it’s a racing game, or maybe it’s something else.”
Recently, Platinum announced a new game, Project G.G., which is the next game being directed by Hideki Kamiya, and Kamiya himself also made it clear that though the game will have action elements, it will be more than just purely action experience. That, and the fact that their new studio is focused on things that thy haven’t really ever done before as a developer, gives a pretty good indication of how much they want to branch out into new kinds of experiences in the future.
PlatinumGames’ ongoing Platinum 4 will be coming to an end soon. With three out of four announcements having been made, the fourth and final reveal will be coming soon– and apparently, it’s going to blow people away.
