Take this with a massive pinch of salt, but according to a new leak, Capcom have started early production on Resident Evil 8. Twitter account EvilVR (as spotted by Twisted Voxel), who claims to have insider info, has posted some details about what the game will be like, while also talking about some potential remake projects. While unsubstantiated (and not much to suggest that the info provided by the source is legitimate), it’s worth noting that the same account also posted accurate information on the Resident Evil 2 remake before it was out, so there’s at least something to go on.
According to the leak, Resident Evil 8’s story is going to follow from the plot threads that were introduced in Resident Evil 7, with the core setup being to try and figure out who has been developing bioweapons like Eveline from Resident Evil 7. The game is supposedly going to take place on an abandoned and isolated island that is caught in the middle of storms, where the corporation that builds these bioweapons was based, before they closed up shop and bailed, while also leaving some of their dead employees behind.
What’s interesting is that, as per this leak, Resident Evil 8 will re-use several concepts and elements that had originally been planned for an earlier build of Resident Evil 4, a project that was then abandoned, before development on the game was restarted (we all now know that project as Resident Evil 3.5). These elements will include the enemy known as Hook-Man, while the game will also see the player fighting off against hallucinations, not knowing which enemies are real and which ones aren’t.
Also interesting is the claim that following the incredible reception received by Resident Evil 2, and how well the game has been doing ever since, Resident Evil 8 is going to abandon the first person camera adopted in Resident Evil 7, and go for a third person over-the-shoulder perspective instead. The leak doesn’t go into who the protagonist will be, but interestingly enough, there’s also supposedly internal discussions being held about whether to call the game Resident Evil 8, or to develop it as a spinoff.
The leaker also speaks about a remake for Resident Evil 3: Nemesis– apparently, Capcom are very interested in remaking the title, and they’re either in talks about getting started on the project, or work on it has already begun. The report also claims that Capcom will release the Resident Evil 3 remake before they release Resident Evil 8. Work on the latter supposedly began last year after Resident Evil 2 was wrapped up.
There’s no word on whether Capcom will be remaking other classic Resident Evil titles, such as Code Veronica. Currently, according to the leak, Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil 8 are the only two RE games in development at their studios. The leaker does, however, state that Capcom has no interest in remaking Resident Evil 4, 5, or 6.
Once again, take this all with a pinch of salt- there’s no way to confirm the veracity of these leaks. But it definitely sounds interesting. Capcom have spoken very little about Resident Evil 8 in the past, but they did state that it could end up being very different from Resident Evil 7, and these details do seem to fit in with that (interesting unrelated note: series creator and Resident Evil 4 director has also expressed interest in maybe returning to direct another Resident Evil game some day).
Meanwhile, the possibility of Capcom working on a remake for Nemesis is also far from remote. Just recently, they said that that’s something they would consider if Resident Evil 2 were successful and if there was enough demand for fans for similar treatment for other older titles in the series- and both boxes have been ticked already.
For now, though, file this under “rumours”. We’ll keep you updated in case there’s any new info on this front, so stay tuned.
