In a somewhat anticipated announcement, Square Enix confirmed during Google’s recent Stadia Connect that Octopath Traveler would be available on Stadia. Which is to say it’s available now. Check out the trailer below for a better idea of what the game offers.

First released in July 2018 for the Nintendo Switch, Octopath Traveler takes place in the world of Orsterra with eight different characters to choose form. Each has their own backstory and Path Actions, which allow for different results in the world, so you can either compose a party of desired comrades or go it alone. The RPG has received acclaim for its retro-style visuals and combat – check out our review for more details.

Even if you don’t pick it up on Switch or Google Stadia, Octopath Traveler is also available for PC. The development team is currently working on Bravely Default 2 for the Nintendo Switch which should release later this year. You can check out gameplay for the same here.

The Switch launch exclusive Square Enix RPG, Octopath Traveler, is out today on PC, bringing its retro JRPG trappings and its beautiful diorama-esque aesthetic to even wider audiences. Square Enix have put out a new trailer for the game, suggesting new audiences (or older players) how they can make the game more challenging for themselves if they wish to do so.

It ranges from the simple, like playing the entire game with just one character, to some more interesting stuff, like finding the ultimate Battle Tested weapons, unlocking the Gates of Finis, unlocking all secret advanced jobs, and more. There’s also some gameplay footage in there, so take a look if you’ve never played the game before and are thinking of picking it up on PC.

Octopath Traveler launched last year on the Nintendo Switch to solid reviews, and also sold pretty well globally. Square Enix clearly have more plans for the brand- a prequel to the game has also been announced for mobile devices.

Square Enix officially confirms the RPG's PC release date as June 7th.

After prematurely revealing the news last week, Square Enix has officially confirmed that Octopath Traveler is coming to PC via Steam. It’s also released an official trailer for the same, which you can see below. Octopath Traveler will release on June 7th worldwide for PC.

The trailer itself doesn’t contain any information on PC-specific features, but it’s likely that we’ll hear more about this in the coming weeks. Developed by Square Enix and Acquire, the RPG pays homage to old-school titles with its aesthetic and combat system. Players can choose from eight different travelers, each with their own story, role, and unique abilities.

Each traveler has their own adventure and quest to fulfill in the world of Orsterra. With eight regions to explore, a turn-based combat system emphasizing powered up attacks and guard breaks, and a gorgeous art-style, Octopath Traveler should be worth experiencing on PC. Check out GamingBolt’s official review of the Nintendo Switch version in the meantime.

It looks like the rating for a PC version of Octopath Traveler was the real deal. Square Enix has officially announced today (in a blog post that has since been deleted, which is really all the confirmation you need) that Octopath Traveler, the formerly Switch-exclusive JRPG that was a modern take on classic JRPGs with new mechanics, will be launching on PC this June.

Octopath Traveler was an immense success when it launched on the Switch, both critically and commercially. A PC version stands to be the definitive version of the game, owing to the graphics not being hindered in any way by the hardware, and the possibility of mods to address some of the game’s more glaring issues, such as the excess of random encounters.

According to the deleted blog post, Octopath Traveler will be coming to PC via Steam and the Square Enix Store. It’s a bit surprising Epic Games Store didn’t solicit it, given that it runs on Unreal Engine 4, but maybe Epic doesn’t really care much for Japanese games yet.

The Switch RPG has been rated for PC in Korea.

Square Enix’s classic turn based JRPG, Octopath Traveler launched last year exclusively for the Nintendo Switch and was very successful on the market, but it seems the game might be making its way over to other platforms as well. A PC version of the game has ben rated by the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea, as spotted by Gematsu.

The rating also mentions Bandai Namco as the game’s publisher, which also checks out- the company has often acted as distributor for Square Enix’s titles in Korea. Given how successful Octopath Traveler was when it launched, and how Square Enix obviously wants to keep making games in its mould, it wouldn’t be too surprising if they did indeed decide to expand the game’s audiences to appeal to a larger number of people in order to see more sales.

Not too long ago, a prequel for Octopath Traveler was also announced for iOS and Android devices. Octopath Traveler itself was a great game (but not without its flaws), so if it does indeed end up coming over to PC, audiences would be in for a treat. You can read our review for the game through here to see if it appeals to your tastes.

You got more than you bargained for!

Octopath Traveler is very successful, and we know a follow-up for consoles is in development. That’s great news. But meanwhile, Square Enix are also pushing a new Octopath game for mobiles—it’s called Octopath Traveler Tairiku no Hasha, which roughly translates to Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent.

I wouldn’t be too hopeful about it—it will be free-to-play (meaning microtransactions), and for now, it’s only confirmed for Japan (because it’s not like Octopath Traveler demonstrated how much of a market there is for this kind of game worldwide, right?). There will be a beta for the game which you can register for starting March 12 here on the official website, however.

In good news, it does look like the game will continue the gorgeous “HD-2D” look from the original Switch game, so at least there is that. Maybe Japanese gamers will find that the game can tide them over until the console follow-up ends up launching, whenever and whatever it is.

Octopath Traveler has been an absolute success for Square Enix and Acquire. The developers announced today on Twitter that the game has sold 1.5 million units worldwide since its release last Summer; this is up from the 1.08 million we knew it had done back in January, and in spite of the chronic and severe shortages that plagued availability for it for weeks.

Acquire, the developers of the game, also confirmed today that they are working on a console-based follow-up (although it’s unclear whether this follow up is going to be an Octopath sequel, or a brand new IP). That said, they also said that the game will take some time to develop, and apologized for the wait.

Octopath Traveler was a great, accomplished throwback to classic 16-bit turn based RPGs that nonetheless suffered from some issues. Hopefully, any follow up to it will see the developers take the feedback regarding repetition in Octopath into account, because if they do, their next game could be a legitimate classic. Octopath Traveler itself is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

To be specific, just the term is trademarked, not the art style itself.

When Octopath Traveler launched on Nintendo Switch last year, one reason it attracted so much attention (which went on to translate into mainstream success for it) was its unique art style. Said art style was a gorgeous modern renditioning of how classic 16- and 32-bit JRPGs used to look, utilizing modern effects and technologies to replicate the look of a sprite based game.

Square Enix used the term “HD-2D” to describe the art, and apparently, they may not be done with it. That’s because Square Enix has filed a trademark in Europe for “HD-2D” and “HD2D”, which seems to indicate that this is a term they plan to use in their marketing going forward. That, in turn, implies one of two things (if not both): that Octopath Traveler is going to become a mainstay franchise, and they will emphasize its artstyle more heavily, or that this artstyle will be used to push more new games from the publisher.

Personally, I would love for Square to use this artstyle to give us remakes of the SNES Final Fantasy games. Can you imagine Final Fantasy IV or VI in this style? That would be amazing. I know the developers of Octopath said they have no interest in doing that, but maybe someone else could be handed the reins of such a project?

Whatever comes in this new HD-2D artstyle, I am sure we will all be interested to see how it turns out. Octopath Traveler is out now, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
