Octopath Traveler Sold 1.08 Million Units Outside of Japan

The HD-2D throwback RPG seems to have done tremendously well.

Octopath Traveler

Octopath Traveler was a gorgeous throwback JRPG that launched exclusively for the Nintendo Switch last year, and went on to do unexpectedly well. Now, in their fiscal report, Nintendo has revealed that the game shipped over a million copies outside of Japan—1.08 million copies to be specific.

Nintendo can report the figure for outside Japan (and only that figure) because they were the publishers of the game in Europe and North America, while Square Enix themselves handled the title in Japan. The last known number for Octopath Traveler was it selling a million units worldwide, so it having done more than that outside of Japan is excellent news, and will probably encourage Square to keep investing in these sorts of games more going forward.

Between the success this game and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 have seen on the Switch, as well as Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition, it is clear Nintendo has built an audience for JRPGs on the system. Now to see how many publishers cater to it.
