Those who’ve played Wreckfest will tell you that it’s one of the best arcade racers to have been released in recent memory, and developer Bugbear Entertainment and publisher THQ Nordic have now announced that it’s getting a sequel. Wreckfest 2 was officially announced at the recent THQ Nordic Digital Showcase. Check out its announcement trailer below.

THQ Nordic confirms that Wreckfest will launch for the Nintendo Switch one June 21, and will be priced for $39.99 / €39.99.

Since its launch for PC in 2018, Bubgear Entertainment’s car combat arcade racer Wreckfest has amassed a sizeable player base and fan following, and the fact that the game’s been brought over to pretty much every platform that’s available has certainly helped it. Last year, it was confirmed that Wreckfest would also be releasing for the Nintendo Switch, though updates on the same completely dried up following that.

Now, publisher THQ Nordic has confirmed that Wreckfest is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch on June 21. It will retail for $39.99 / €39.99. On the Switch, the game will offer 16-player multiplayer, 30 FPS performance, and two seasons’ worth of content- season one includes 20 each of vehicles and roof decorations, a car customization pack, and more, while season 2 brings another 12 additional cars.

Check out the Switch version’s release date trailer below.

Currently, Wreckfest is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.

The upgrade will cost an additional $10 for those who already have the game on last-gen consoles.

THQ Nordic and Bugbear Entertainment recently released a patch for their high octane racing title Wreckfest that added support for 4K and 60 FPS on Xbox Series X and 4K and 30 FPS on Xbox Series S– but it seems they aren’t done just yet as far as next-gen updates for the racer are concerned.

It’s been confirmed that Wreckfest will be releasing on PS5 on June 1 with a native version. The upgrade will bring support for 24 players in multiplayer races, dynamic dirt on vehicles, increased amount of foliage, higher resolution textures, new visual effects for skidmarks, godrays, and improvements to shadows, particles, and environment lighting. You can also expect support for the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, in addition to significantly faster load times.

Meanwhile, Wreckfest will also be seeing a similar release on Xbox Series X/S. That will be coming later in the year, but no specific release date for that has been shared yet.

There is a catch though- there is no free next-gen upgrade option. If you already own a last-gen copy of Wreckfest, you’ll need to pay $9.99 / €9.99 to upgrade to the next-gen version.

Wreckfest is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Several developers over the last few months have taken the opportunity to leverage the combination of the Xbox Series X/S’ more powerful hardware and backward compatibility capabilities to go back to older releases and boost them up for the newer consoles, either in terms of resolution or performance (or both). The latest game to do that is Bugbear Entertainment’s car combat title Wreckfest.

As revealed by the developer in the patch notes for the game’s most recent update, Wreckfest now runs at 4K and 60 frames per second on the Xbox Series X, while on Xbox Series S, it runs at 4K and 30 frames per second. Whether the latter is running at a native resolution hasn’t been specified, though it seems unlikely.

It’s worth noting that this same update hasn’t been made available on PS5. Owing to how the PS5’s backward compatibility functions, several games have missed out on similar enhancements on the console, in spite of receiving them on Xbox Series X/S, with the likes of Rocket League and Star Wars: Squadrons being notable examples.

Wreckfest is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility.

Marvel’s Spider-Man, thanks to a price drop (and possibly thanks to its new Game of the Year Edition), has seen a massive boost in sales, jumping up from thirty-fourth place last week to the eight spot this week.

THQ Nordic, better known for publishing Darksiders 3 and acquiring the Kingdoms of Amalur and Timesplitters IPs, continues to expand. The publisher has announced that it has acquired Coffee Stain Studios (of Goat Simulator and Deep Rock Galactic fame) and Bugbear Entertainment (Wreckfest). Interestingly enough, in its financial report for Q3 2018, the publisher also revealed that it has 35 unannounced titles in development.

Speaking about the studio acquisitions, THQ Nordic CEO Lars Wingefors said of Coffee Stain Studios, “We are creating a complementary digital native pillar to THQ Nordic. Coffee Stain is a passionate and highly competent team creating and publishing great games. After some years without major releases, the pipeline of new game releases such as Satisfactory and Deep Rock Galactic look strong. I look forward to working together with Anton Westbergh and his team in the future.”

Coffee Stain CEO Anton Westbergh said, “I strongly believe that THQ Nordic is a great home for Coffee Stain. In addition to having long experience within games development and publishing, THQ Nordic has the skills, willingness and capital to support our new releases and growth in the future.”

As for Bugbear Entertainment, Wingefors said, “We have been working together with Janne Alanenpää and his team since 2016, and see continued great potential in Wreckfest as well as in Bugbear’s future games pipeline. Janne Alanenpää is a legend within action racing games, and the Bugbear team will bring important development capabilities earned from creating outstanding games during almost two decades. We are very excited to have been able to acquire Bugbear and their portfolio and our aim is to build Wreckfest together into a major franchise for THQ Nordic with the release to console coming up first in time.”

Bugbear Entertainment CEO Janne Alanenpää in turn stated, “We are very excited to join forces with the THQ Nordic team. I believe THQ Nordic will become a perfect home for Bugbear to support our passion for games and for our customer. We look forward to accelerate our development of high quality racing games to contribute to THQ Nordic’s portfolio and future growth.”

THQ Nordic has roughly 55 games that it’s working on right now, including Generation Zero, Desperados 3, Biomutant and the upcoming Darksiders 3. The number of studios acting as subsidiaries for the company is currently at 12, but who knows where it could go next. For now, we’re looking forward to the release of Darksiders 3 on November 27th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

The spiritual successor to Flatout needs "more time" to polish multiplayer and "overall performance."

Bugbear Entertainment’s Wreckfest has had some trouble living up to the legacy of the Flatout franchise. Though it received favourable reviews at launch for PC, its Early Access period saw numerous delays and issues. The Xbox One and PS4 versions were originally slated to release on November 20th (after being delayed from their initial 2017 release date). However, they’ve recently been pushed back again, this time to 2019.

Currently, the development team is working on performance issues and polishing the multiplayer for the console versions. THQ Nordic senior producer Roger Joswig’s noted in a recent statement, “Wreckfest for consoles will only be released as soon as we love playing it. After the fantastic release on PC, the benchmark for the console release is much higher.

“At this moment, the team needs more time to polish the multiplayer part, as well as the overall performance on the game to bring it up to par with the experience on PC. We are sorry for keeping fans waiting longer because of this. However, we already have compensation in the form of further vehicles, including a special crazy vehicle, in the works for consoles.”

On the one hand, the delays are unfortunate for eager console fans. On the other hand, they will (hopefully) lead to a more polished product which is more fun to play. It could go either way, honestly, but at least the developer is putting in the effort to ensure a fun experience for all. Meanwhile, the PC version of Wreckfest has been seeing a fair number of updates since launch, so it might be worth checking out in the meantime.

THQ Nordic has revealed that their demolition derby racer, Wreckfest, will officially launch on PC as of June 14, which the press release jokes is only 1611 days after the game first hit Steam Early Access.

Bugbear Entertainment has a certain racing pedigree to them, having titles like Ridge Racer Unbounded and Flatout 1 & 2 under their belts, and have clearly taken their time to get this one right. Console players aren’t left out in the cold, with a port promised for November on PS4 and Xbox One.

If the screenshots below are any indication, clearly the development time has been well spent. The game boasts a precise physics system, soft body damage for its vehicles allowing them to bang up in convincing ways and a style all it’s own that isn’t trying to ape Forza. Check them out and let us know your thoughts in the comments secion below.
